Today, I delve into the dangers of the roads here in Bangkok. Thailand has one of the highest road traffic tolls in the world, with many motorcyclists not wearing helmets here, the statistics are alarming. In this Documentary, I speak with locals to get a better understanding of why it appears Thai people aren't concerned with motorcycle safety.

I'm not the type to cry, but this video struck a cord. 7 years ago my partners 14 year old brother was hit by a car in Pattaya while riding a motorbike with no helmet. He died. The funeral in Buriram was one of the worse days of my life. If he had a helmet on he would still be here with us. I wish more Thai's, and foreigners would put a damn helmet on.

I'm sorry for your loss. I'm only saying that peer pressure and influence is better than hard laws. I wear a helmet always. I think it's a requirement and should be encouraged. I just don't like rules and enforcement. I use common sense. More education and peer pressure is better in my mind.

Thanks so much. When my partner asked for a scooter I pleased to make a car driving licence and bought a pickup car. Licence was made in just 2 days ... so they all learn how to drive on the streets in the traffic ... which leads to so many victims ... so sad. But if you believe in reincarnation you go with a smile

Motorcycle taxis should not be allowed in the country in the first place. However, due to the heavy traffic, it has become difficult to commute using other types of vehicles. This led to the emergence of a new kind of taxi service to meet the demand. I recall when motorcycle taxis were restricted to certain areas (Soi) but later became widespread across the entire town. It is a dangerous form of public transport that should be prohibited.

Great video! This is probably the biggest concern I have about living in Thailand: the traffic, crossing the street, and the lack of traffic law enforcement. Another issue? The deadly minivan accidents that occur traveling from Bangkok to Pattaya. Never take a minivan; always take a bus, car or train. There are too many collisions. A well-crafted bike helmet would work for most accidents and be cooler than the typical motorcycle helmet.

I also love your idea about the cops giving you a choice of buying a helmet or paying the fine! Brilliant! That said, I don't wear a helmet when I bolt/moto as a pillion from my Suan Phlu condo to the Sala Daeng BTS. It's a five minute ride. It can be dodgy. Loved also the "crossover" with Paddy Doyle! It's nice to hear opinions also from other KZbinrs. This should be something that could bring an advantage. Opinions from influencers from other countries, could be the sparkle to make things work better in Thailand, as in other places too.

I'm the first to admit that I don't always wear a helmet on the back of a moto taxi, but I always wear one when I am riding my own bike around Hua Hin. There's also some weird thing about if you get booked for speeding etc, then you can't get booked again on the same journey - you just need to show the police officer the original ticket. A mate of mine who lives in BKK and often catches moto Taxis, has invested in an expensive/high quality helmet.

Excellent Video Adam. Being a bit of a nut in my youth I have my share of road rash. Both my knees are ground down, but I always wear a helmet. I understand the Thai philosophy about the "Will of Buddha" thinking the universe will protect them if they make good merit. I have witnessed my share of motorcycle fatalities in Thailand. I will never forget the time I let a friend take my bike for a ride. He did not put on a helmet. He did not return. Found him dead in the highway. He left a wife and a young child.

Great video Adam! I have lived in Thailand for over 17 years and touch wood never had an accident. From Australia 🇦🇺 I have had a lot of extensive driver training in my life due to work and training was always ongoing. I have often thought about how to change the culture towards driving cars and riding motorcycles in Thailand 🇹🇭 and had many conversations. You have said exactly what I have said for many years, and that’s introducing driver and motorcycle training into schools, starting with theory and as they get close to finishing some practical. Getting the youth involved now is the only way and eventually it will filter through but will take time. The older generation will convert because of peer group pressure from their children as they will identify the dangers to the parents etc, because they will be educated. My son is 11 and like my dad did with me when I grew up in the UK, he would often teach me driving skills in theory and then practically as well in a controlled environment. I have already told my son I do not want him on a motorcycle and thank fully he is not interested!!

All the times I have been to thailand the travel from the airport to pattaya or over to DMK is terrifying always convinced we are gonna crash, tailgating, late breaking etc. I dont remember it being so bad anywhere else in the country just in BKK, slightly reminiscent of the few times I have driven around London in the UK (or stoke). I know the motorways seem a bit mad with the swerving lanes etc but at least its not heavy traffic except for anchoring on at the toll booths. My first visit ever was for songkran and my little brother who lives in thailand said dont get on a motorbike and/or stay off the roads. The amount of buckets of water I have seen thrown into motorcyclists faces during songkran... so crazy.

Great video mate, I've been in Thailand as a proffessional working or an expat if you like for around 6 years. I've seen at least a dozen deaths with the locals and a simple helmet would have saved their lives in most of these circumstances. I remember one day, when a mother and daughter on motorcycle had been T-boned by a delivery truck that did not stop to assist, pushed the pair into a culvert after sliding for 10 metres, There heads hit the culvert violently, however a simple helmet would have most likely would have saved their lives. Because of the busy intersection, they were subsequently run over there after including heavy trucks and no one failed to stop and see if they were ok. The mother and daughter literally became part of the road. Astonishing to say the least. I own a car and a motorcycle in Thailand and there is no way if we take the motorcycle even on a short ride without wearing helmets.

Great video!! I wonder if there's a 3rd option though. A lighter, well ventilated, helmet much like what bicycle riders wear? The heat is a problem and discouraging "proper" helmets... and I really wonder if those $10-$20 helmets meet any standards. Finally, a spray-sanitizer for shared helmets? Something that removes the connotation for communal wear items? Stay safe out there Thailand!

Excellent video Keis! I was thinking about these issues, with the helmets, in Thailand and other South Eastern countries, as well lately. It's serendipity I guess, that you made this video. I've been to South East Asia and know what you mean. Another reason people don't use taxi helmets, given by the driver, is that they find them to obviously to hot to wear and dirty and it comes down to one person's belief system, as well. As we are all aware, Buddhism is the apparently the biggest religion in that region and you already know this, that the belief system in this religion. hold the head to be the most sacred and a lot of people us this excuse not to wear it, even they don't come out and say this but subconsciously conditioning is diluting the safety aspects, of wearing proper safety gear. Maybe they think wearing a taxi's borrowed helmet used by some many others, will affect their health and well being in some way, in the future. Instead of coming up with more excuses of "I am only travelling short distances", which is another cough out. It may not be percentage wise, at. higher number, be as vulnerable to getting into to an accident caused by another or yourself, with a motorcycle but you're still vulnerable to getting hurt or hurting others, in short distance as well. Global statistics with accidents happen usually in a short distances anyways Accidents can happen anywhere. Short or long, all of these excuses I mentioned, shows a lot of people, are un-educated & of callus thinking. Plus if this is general public sentiment, in not just Thailand and South East Asia. Then the continued lose of life and the numbers you displayed in your video, of the daily, monthly and yearly traffic accidents deaths, unfortunately will just continue. Plus, these governments in power now, don't really care, of the safety and health of their citizens. They have all their priorities messed up. If Thailand only promotes awareness videos, that shows them as coming off as comedy videos. Well, thats just plan stumped and displaying arrogant ways of misinterpreting a very serious matter. Perhaps, these governments need to stop concealing the hard truth's of what is really happening and start showing content like those (Final destination Hollywood movie series), if you seen these movies, you'll get my point, or have a watch but I am not saying to those extremities, of these movies, however similiar to the outcomes. The videos that you displayed from Australia are excellent. More and more types of these videos need to be adapted to these countries governments. Then perhaps, that might bring the accidents and death numbers down. They will need to add them into television and social accounts, in heavy heavy rotation, to educate the ignorance. I myself was in a motor vehicle in 2018, here in my Western country and fortunately by the grace of God spared my life. I was not seriously injured to the point of some musculoskeletal damage but I am still endearing car and soft tissue damage which will be with me for the rest of my life. Perhaps it's time to raise more awareness, of this serious health and safety issue so are many possible ways, to make efforts to fix all these problems. We live in 2024. Like that Cartoon show, the Jetsons. The future in now! We have so many innovators and developers, that can help change all this. We have internet, vast social media outlets and the growing presence AI. For examples, we can have better cooling materials and clothing made for helmets. They have air conditioned and heat neck wrap arounds for the next, belt, already for the public. Cooling mechanisms in all sorts. Especially in the climate of Southeast Asia where it's mostly hot all year round. Amazon for example and other retail sites online have plenty of these devices and products available. . I can go on and on, about these subjects for hours and I liked your idea about wear the clean used helmet or take the fine, is an excellent that the Thai government needs to wake up and start implementing & enforcing these rules or pay the very high Thai baht fine. Bottom line, too many of loved ones, are dying on the roads of our planet, for the wrong reasons. Father's ,mother's, brother, sister's son's, daughter's, uncles, aunts, cousins and our children. The list goes on and on, It's gotta stop, somewhere and how. As you have read, I am passionate about this and you lit a fire under me today, to start doing something about this. Thank you. Every voice counts and your voice ignited my voice and know it's my voice to ignite someone else's voice. Then eventually we can ignite everyone's voice on this topic. Some way, some how., things have to change, Perhaps the people that are responsible for transportation and health and safety of our roads, in governments, they need to start doing something about this madness! Or be replaced and stop coming up with excuses, why this is not changing. There is a solution, to everything in this world. Those that say the're can't do it. Well, they can go fck themselves! And will find people that can. Anyways, I really appreciate and like, what you're doing with your video content. I've been following for a few years now and a big fan. I've been planning my return to Thailand trip this year. I was there back in early 2020. Perhaps, we could meet up in Bangkok for a coffee, all be there in July and over the summer. Mojo Mountain 🙏🙏🙏

Another great video, thank you Adam. Back in the 80s I rode in Phuket and Chiang Mai without a helmet, it was social acceptable!? In the 90s they started enforcing a helmet law and I was smarter and complied. In America laws are decided by the state. There is no helmet law in Hawaii or Arizona, for example, yet there is a seatbelt law for occupants in vehicles! WFT, O? Advanced society? When is your next trip out of Thailand? I really enjoyed your Japan MiniDoc. Cheers, Mate. 🍻🌴😎

Adam, good video regarding helmets. I'm guessing you are considering doing more like this which I feel is a good direction to go. The same video could've been made here in Pattaya. It's crazy how many ride without one. And it's just not Thais. It seems most farangs don't use them and they are the ones piloting the most powerful bikes on the street. I'd like to actually get involved and do something to both promote the education of the importance of helmets and also to provide them to those here in Thailand in need. I'll send you an email with thoughts

Great video. It will only change when they start enforcing the fines. People usually only change their habits when it cost them, either in money or health.

Bloody good point and video, really makes sense in the long run, like you said,, cultural differences are difficult to address and adapt to after years of being able to not wear a helmet, Culture and the younger new generation will adapt, sooner than later for their own good, enforcing it is a major factor, hopefully people will understand more, good presentation Keis, (Adam ,)very good .

I was on a motorbike taxi and had no helmet on and it was a 500 baht fine for me, the driver didn’t receive a fine.

I noticed the new Sony alpha camera, looks like you had some trouble with the autofocus especially on the Doyle segment. How is it dragging all the extra lenses around 😂? The point is visuals are better and we can see it so good work. Are you happy with it? I was thinking about trying an A7C. One point on the Thai traffic deaths, they are number 6 or something in the world and out of that the majority of deaths are young males 16-22 or something like that. Only once has a motorbike taxi offered me a helmet to wear for the ride.

Yeah I had been having some troubles, the paddy section was actually the first thing I shot for this and I realised when I was home reviewing the footage.. I rectified the problem but still having the odd focus issue with that lens, I think there is a faulty censor in it.. The other shots are pretty good, and with the 50mm lens the shots are beautiful.. so it’s ok, I enjoy the artistic approach with that camera 😊

Your idea at the end is actually a great idea .... The fine is more thsn the cost of a cheap helmet... Helmets wouldn't give anyone the ability to drive but it would have to help.... The economic costs must be huge too with so many deaths and injuries...

Here in the states the helmet laws are so-so, allowing for helmets that are hardly more than a pro baseball cap. Also, we have nothing like those graphic commercials which seam terrifying but effective.

The number of motorcyclists in the States can not compared to those in Thailand in terms of density per area. The motorcycle is considered the must-have stuff, especially for the poor. This is the same case in SE countries as well but Thailand is probably the worst compared to Vietnam, Indonesia, or India in terms of accidents.
