She seems like a fantastic teacher, I had many funny stories with my thai. I worked in a school in nonthaburi that was called watkhema you probably know it. Got my tones wrong in a taxi asking to take me there, taxi driver laughed all the way to the school. I found out i was actually taking me to the dog shit temple 5555. I have made loads of funny mistakes but it Is fun great learning experience. Living in an area with not many foreigners has helped Me as you have no choice to use it.

Only reason I clicked on this video was because I saw the thumb nail with Ivy in it. I remember a few months back I saw her on italki. Her introduction video was so well done, how could I ever forget. She stood out from the rest of the teachers by a mile. If I ever wanted a tutor she was the one I was going with!

This was an absolutely amazing and helpful video. When I lived in Thailand it literally took me 2 years to feel confident in speaking Thai due to my language skills and the tones. I appreciate this video more than you know. Ivy is a great example of a teacher that emphasizes the importance of vocabulary in the Thai language.

Great interview. She looks and sounds like a good teacher. I’ve lived in Thailand for 6 years and have taken all sorts of lessons. I’m functional in Thai but not conversational. One thing I would like to try is a walk & talk lesson. Go to a market or store and learn and practice in real life with a teacher by my side.

I care a SUPER LOT about the study and teaching of languages. Videos of this nature are most interesting to me. I have spoken English way more than 45 years. I have been speaking Chinese 45 years. I will continue to work on my spoken and written Thai, which is a labor of love that has occupied much of my time during the past decade. Thai is more difficult than Mandarin, by a wide margin, IMHO.

Keep up the good work man. Back when you were talking about going back to live in Ireland, I commented (it doesn't matter if you remember or noticed this) that you've still got plenty of material that'd be of interest to many. That you could keep doing interviews with people currently living in Thailand or have a story to tell. I'm sure you didn't need that from ME, and that you had many of the same ideas but it seems to me that this was the right thing to do. Keep it up, and you'll hit 50k+ subs in no time. You were at 25-30k at that time I believe. And also, there's nothing wrong with angling away from a YT channel's' main topic' over time, or at least diversifying, many do this in various ways. You've got a good thing going here.
@ThairishTimes
@ThairishTimes Жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, it’s funny that you mentioned diversifying away from the channels main theme because I’ve recently interviewed an Irishman and an American who’s story isn’t Thailand related but their stories were super interesting. I’ll be uploading them soon

The conversation was focused on formal Thai lessons. The real problem in learning Thai in an everyday situation is Thai people always laugh when you attempt the language. Although they might see it as cute, it's also self confidence destroying. Just an option

Man, I really loved this video. I first made an incision into Thailand, from Malaysia, on January 8th 1984 and have lived in Chiang Mai since April 17th 2006. And, even though I have been learning (or trying to) Thai for that whole time, I still learnt a couple of things just from this video. Absolutely top stuff and i think Ivy is a fab teacher, and wonderful to hear that she has also connected with so many of her students on a personal level......I hope she never gets burnt by any of them and may her success be awesome :)

I've been living in Thailand for a year. I'm in a small town so there aren't any other English speakers. I've found learning to read some Thai speeds things along because the tones are expressed in the written form. Of course I make mistakes and tie myself in knots here and there but if you try to enjoy the mistakes and you'll learn a new word or improve pronunciation a little every day.

Interesting video, as always Pete and I often refer to the beautiful and unlucky word which means a different thing in different tones - just like kite flying and another much more private pursuit. I have a TEFL diploma too and Rung and I spent a whole day in a small village teaching English. The kids were so obedient and it was fun. I have also taught adults from a building site who could not communicate with each other so this was a specialized topic and even I had to learn building phrases that I was unfamiliar with. It was like the classic comedy series called, " Mind Your Language." It was amusing at times as adults from Romania, Italy and Turkey tried to communicate with each other. I had to steer well clear of sensitive subjects like religion but that applies to any class, anywhere.

Italki's good. It has trained teachers and what they call a "community tutor," which is what she is - a normal, untrained person doing her best. If you want to improve, work with a trained teacher. They're professionals who know what they're doing. She's winging it; if you improve, it's largely because of you, not her. She doesn't know what she's doing. She's just put together her own thing.

Ivy just a note. You should consider Thai to have just one vocabulary for most intents and purposes. You are not teaching linguistics. It is like when I go into a Thai restaurant, sometimes they will say they have many menus. So I ask for them . . . and it turns out they are ALWAYS lying! 99% of Thai restaurants have just one menu.

I dont think so some how. I will have you know that her English is fantastic and her knowledge of the language shames me at times. Her understanding of the way we structure our sentences is exceptional, and helps when she puts into context how similar sentences are made more simple by thai's..Her lessons are not only made fun and enjoyable, but she is brilliant at understanding and remembering where you are as far as your individual learning, and with so many students, I find quite remarkable and it shows that she really cares about her students. So as far as your last comment, you are so wrong, and in fact its just reads as being unnesciarly rude and flippant tbh.
