Thales, as the main contractor, undertook a complete turnkey project for the Saudi Arabian railways, providing freight and passengers traffic across the country, along 2400 km. The Thales turnkey rail project includes:
- train control with ETCS L2 (European Train Control System Level 2)
- route control with interlockings
- field elements to increase safety along the route
- an operation control centre (OCC) for traffic management with ARAMIS, security & trains supervision (power supply, diesel generators, etc.)
- communications for train control (GSM-R), security & passenger information,
- rolling stock management
Saudi Arabian railways are now being equipped with the latest technologies for train signaling, ensuring safety and operational efficiency.
As for instance, ETCS L2 is the latest Train control technology for mainlines, it allows the reduction of wayside signaling elements and it optimizes the system lifecycle cost.

The train animation at the beginning is an Amtrak P42 with a set of Amfleet coaches. Nice. Edit: The freight train animations are clearly CSX (YN2 paint) locomotives without lettering.

What it doesn't tell you is that with the advent of GSMR in-cab signalling and electronic maintenance monitoring systems, the role of the workforce is negligible. If the system was to go nationwide in UK, thousands of jobs would dissapaear from the railway network. These would be persons with many years' of experience in signalling maintenance, driving, signalling and general safety. Very scary stuff.

The problem is one faced in many industries, automation. I think that trains are probably one of the most easily automated things around, and in my opinion, the advent of GSM-R based ETCS will make a lot of problems and issues, especially in the UK where SPAD is such an issue become less of a problem. Plus, with more automation, human error gets mitigated. Of course, humans are still needed somewhere, such as in system monitoring, OKing trains to start off from a platform for passenger services, etc. A lot of this is already seen such as some of the lines of the London Underground, the DLR and plans for the Glasgow Subway. Furthermore, TVM on HS1 and the LGVs in France enable some very advanced in-cab signalling which keeps a driver vigilant with many systems. In Germany, LZB on many lines is mandatory and with most trains, a system called AFB can enable a train to take full automatic control in an LZB area, meaning that the driver only needs to keep using the driver vigilance switch and watch for any abnormalities in the signalling coming to the train and track-side signals. The problem is, track side signalling is full of problems, and every one of those problems can cause a SPAD in the UK. Imagine, if all of those problems relating to expensive track-side signals that cannot be read easily in poor or too bright light, or what have you. Imagine, the need for DRAs to be not necessary as the signal aspect is constantly available in cab. Driving would be a lot less pressure on drivers, and drivers would only need to monitor the train, manage DOO if that was the case, and take control of the train if something unusual or abnormal happened.
