Tamil Nadu has a rich history of art and entertainment. Isai (Music) and Nadagam (Dance Drama) had their roots in the rural folk theatre.
There are many many more styles. I explored some dance styles from Tamil Nadu in this performance - Kuthu, Kavadi aatam, Kolattam & Bharatnatyam
Kuthu is a street party in which music and dance are performed by people during festivals and weddings
Kavadi Aatam is a dance form performed in worship of Lord Murugan. This dance involves carrying Kavadi (burdens) through the pilgrimage.
Kolattam is derived from “Kol” which means stick. During the dance, these Kols are struck together and rhythmic movements are doneThis is performed in a group during festivals and weddings.
Bharatnatyam from Tamil Nadu is considered to be India’s oldest dance form and also the mother of all other styles of classical dance.
