Tolkien and Lewis what an Epic Friendship!!! These 2 Men were my introduction to Fantasy...If it wasn't for them I wouldn't be here!!! I went to London near 3 Years Ago for the Tolkien Exhibit and It was Beautiful!!! While there I have been to the Eagle and the Child, and I find it Funny they added each other in their Works: Tolkien was the Professor in Narnia and Lewis was Treebeard...That is a Cute Friendship!!! Funny thing The People who filmed Narnia filmed some of it in NZ, and that is where Middle Earth was Filmed: More of that, please!!! Tolkien besides his Best Friend got Edith *his Wife* into Christianity too...That is So Sweet!!!

I was well into my adulthood before I realized Narnia was a Christian book. I started reading the Narnia books in my mid-grade school days and would reread them during the years that passed. I was working on my graduate studies when I found that these books of C.S. Lewis were Christian. I was as surprised as the person who told me was surprised I did not know. I am from a family that does not belong to any of the three main religions of the world, and as a good pagan, I saw them as stories of good life much as our teachings inform us how to live well in the world. Plus they were a rollicking good story for a child to read.

Same, even though the allegory is pretty heavy-handed.
@TheMimiSard2 жыл бұрын
I think I got the other side of that experience - I first really heard the Narnia stories while attending church school as a child. My 2nd grade teacher read MN, LWW and LB to my class and pointed out the allegory for us. I think that was a good class reading to have in a Christian primary school.

The best friendships are between people who are the best complements. Tolkien needed encouragement and support, Lewis needed friction and honest debate. It's amazing how much the world has benefited throughout history from true friendships like the one between Lewis and Tolkien.

Great video, man! How amazing it is that Tolkien's faith and slow work to win over C.S. Lewis is what has given us such great works as the Chronicles of Narnia but also the Screwtape Letters, Mere Christianity and so much more. More amazing still is the amount of lives saved that could be attributed to the works of C.S. Lewis and, by extension, Tolkien.

Great video, very informative! I was surprised to find out that Tolkien didn’t like The Chronicles of Narnia, since they are one of my favorite books ever! Lewis' work and writings, specifically The Chronicles of Narnia, The Screwtape Letters, and The Great Divorce, have had a profound impact on me from the time I was in elementary school and well into adulthood. It's an amazing thing to hear how one person (Tolkien in this case, whose work on The Lord of the Rings has also impacted my family deeply) can have such an impact on the life of another, especially in bringing one to Christ. There are a number of authors I love - and almost all are in the works of Fantasy. High Fantasy, swords and sorcery. Where reality drops away and you can enjoy a grand old tale. But if it wasn't for both CS Lewis (his books were THE first I ever read as child) and JRR Tolkien (his books were the SECOND group I ever read), I'd not likely have become much of a reader at all. I've added many great authors to my collection in the decades since - but I'm always drawn back to the Land of Middle-Earth... and most of all... to Narnia and Aslan.

Tolkien would come out several times throughout the years stating things along the lines of "Yes, i don't like those books, but i am a man who knows what i like. However, this doesn't mean I do not, nor that I can not appreciate the contribution that my friends novels have had on the wider population" And though I probably botched that, in essence, Tolkien just didn't find any personal satisfaction in Narnia, but he appreciates what it was on a fundamental level.

Amen! Narnia is absolutely based entirely upon the Christian Worldview! I often wonder what it is like for Non-Christians to read about Aslan’s death and not have it hit them right in the heart. We are all as unworthy as Edmund to be saved from death, yet the King of the Universe chooses to lay down His life for us, awful sinners.
@gustavramirez28913 жыл бұрын
On-the nose? Maybe, but the intended audience for the Narnia books were children, so that makes sense. And, as an adult, I see new things in the Narnia books when I reread them. So, a lot of image, but some deceptive depth too :)
@Procopius4649 ай бұрын
Tolkien did like "Out of the Silent Planet" and "Perelandra." He did not like the last book in that series, or Narnia. Supposedly this was due to the influence of Charles Williams acting on CS Lewis. Tolkien didn't like anything that C Williams wrote, so when Lewis started getting closer to that guy he got more distant from Tolkien.

On the other side of how much Christian ideals are sewn into the fabric of literature, the same can be said for Tolkien, though in his case it is a lot more subtle. I think that is directly related to the allegory he disliked, but his over-aall Catholic Christian morals are baked into the foundations of Middle-Earth. As a child Narnia was a comfortingly Christian story to have fun with. As an adult LotR is a deep and thoughtful story that has deep and familiar morals inside it. I think a person can have both and it make for a strong fantasy backbone of one's life and reading background.
