VENTURES WITH JOE: “THANK YOU AMERICA!” On October 3, 1954 - Lucy & Desi were guests on Ed Sullivan’s “Toast Of The Town” special. As highlighted in this inspirational clip, Desi speaks of his early years in America and how grateful he is for his success, life and career in America. The emotion is raw and the love is real, as you’ll see from not only his reaction but from Lucy’s, too.
Desi:
“I do know something though that I really want to tell you, tonight. What Tex, Tex O’Rourke said about my first job in this country, was cleaning bird cages, is very true. We came to this country and we didn’t have a cent, in our pockets. From cleaning canary cages, to this night here in New York is a long ways. And I don’t think there’s any other country in the world that could give you that opportunity.
I wanna say thank you, thank you America, thank you.” 🇺🇸

Great Columbus day video! A Cuban moved to tears for the exceptionalism and opportunity of the American Way. I wonder... who do you think Desi Arnaz and Lucy would want for President now?

My dad is Cuban. And like Desi My grandfather and grandmother came with their 3 kids with nothing. And they all made something of themselves. I know the world is not perfect but this country is still the best.

My parents both fled Cuba as children . In 1960 a Marine officer who had become a family friend helped my grandmother get my 8 year old father out of Cuba . I’m 1991 I joined the Marines as a way to say thank you . I am saddened to what has become of my country . At the rate we are going I can’t see the Idea of America lasting much longer

There’s a short list of things that always brings me to tears and this short, but beautiful, heartfelt, and sincere speech by Desi Arnaz is one of them. As an immigrant myself, I wish I could tell him that even 60+ years later, there are still people like us who are grateful and think the United States is still the greatest country in the world.

Desi loved America so much that when the writers of I LOVE LUCY came up with a script that had Ricky cheating on his taxes, Desi refused to do it & had them re-write the episode.

That was so beautiful. And to think of so many haters in our own country don't realize how good they have it here or the fact that we have a constitution and they have rights, and have so much more opportunity than any other country in the world.

Desi Arnaz was unbelievably wealthy in Cuba, but his family had to flee during the revolution. Him and his mother got out together. His father got out separately, but fully, 100%, abandoned Desi and his mother. So him and his mother really started their lives in this country with nothing and no one. He wasn't good to Lucille, but it was amazing what he was able to achieve.

This attitude is typical of Cubans who fled Cuba and came here for freedom and a better life. It's unfortunate that so many American youth today want to install socialism/communism without having any idea of what the EXPERIENCE of it is like, but Cubans who fled Cuba to come here understand the experience quite well and so are able to appreciate America more than many American-born youth. The same applies to immigrants from other countries as well.
