"It demands audience attention." That, right there. I've lost count on how many critics missed the fact that Lex was portrayed as an antitheist who hates God for not saving him from his abusive childhood. If they couldn't remember details that were practically spelled out in the movie, there's no trusting the same critics in detecting the more subtle nuances of the movie.
@SumDumGy8 жыл бұрын
Where did you get an abusive childhood out of this? How many times have you seen the film? Perhaps had the role had been better cast, the character would have been a little less buried under the performance.

It isn't a movie for movie fans who appreciate a cohesive story. As a former DC fan who loves and owns many of the books this particular film wraps it's narrative around, I was incredibly disappointed. So which DC fans are you talking about? A comic book movie should never be made for fans alone, and this one tried to be. That's part of its failing.
@giannieg8 жыл бұрын
+The Joker Dude... are you serious? This movie was nothing more than shameless fanservice!
@SumDumGy8 жыл бұрын
+Γιάννης Γαρεφαλάκης In a manner of speaking yes, and that's a very bad idea when it comes to making a movie if you want it to gain casual viewer interest and dollars. Only the biggest of fans of more than just movie versions of these characters would have understood much of what was going on. That's bad storytelling. On the other hand, I think this movie also lets huge fans down. I was once a huge fan and I hate the Doomsday appearance and how the Death of Superman was executed.
@giannieg8 жыл бұрын
Tim Walden Doomsday's looks was the least of this movie's problems, but I agree with you on Superman's death proving to be ineffective. Waaaaay to early for a saga that is just 2 films old.
@SumDumGy8 жыл бұрын
+Γιάννης Γαρεφαλάκης When I said "appearance" I wasn't only referring to his look. I object to everything regarding how Doomsday was executed and delivered: his presence, how he was created, how soon he showed up, how easily he was defeated, and, of course, losing the weight and emotional Impact killing Superman should bring by doing so this early, and then establishing his resurrection three minutes later.

If it is, that's a failure from either the studio and/or the director. A theatrical release should always be putting your best foot forward. "Fixing" a film for home video is fine for the fans, but ultimately signifies a failure in filmmaking.

Very well said. It's so rewarding to hear from and interact with people who get BvS. I've had some great discussions with friends who also loved the movie, and most of our discussions have been not about simple plot or events but about the themes you mentioned and interpretations of how the character arcs fit the themes. To me, BvS is much more like literature and the MCU is much more like popular fiction. I like both, but the literature is made for the primary purpose of exploring the themes (and the characters and plot are there only to serve the themes), whereas popular fiction is about having entertaining characters and a page-turner plot.

Listen, after reading the critical reviews I went in with a biased mind against the movie. But when I came out I told my girl, "this movie is better than JJ Abrams Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Now, I went to Rotten Tomato and saw all the glowing reviews on Star Wars, which I found odd. Reason: It's basically a copy and paste rehash of "A New Hope." Now, follow me here a bit. It's the same stupid critics that slashed Superman returns because it was a ... wait for it -- "a rehash of Richard Donner/Christopher Reeve's Superman." Yet they heaped praise on Star Wars as being "what they've been waiting for" Are you seeing a pattern of bias here?
@movielover51018 жыл бұрын
Disney doesn't pay critics! Are critics biased sometimes sure. Like they are biased towards yA films which I enjoy YA films. And they are biased towards superhero films some times. You can't stop bias. I'm a movie fan with no bias.

+Van Iyke Keep in mind, in Superman Returns, they made Supes a stalker who abandoned the mother of his child. The film had a lot wrong with it. That's why it bombed at the box office and had to be rebooted. Star Wars 7, on the other hand, managers to hit the right balance and people loved it, as evidence by the fact that it made more money than God. So in this case, the reviews pair up pretty well with audience response, just like with BvS.

@Gouthamedara8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Salter If u actually read the comics, u wud knw thats batman. Because thats how he was portrayed. Also this is a grounded version. An old batman feeling helpless. Understands his own mistake when supes asks to save his mother, bat understands why he was wrong all the way. Here he is, trying to kill. He has become what he hates. He realizes that through the Martha episode. If u can dig deeper into brain, yes, you wud have understood it.
@Gouthamedara8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Salter How can batman be scripted badly and acceptable at the same time!! The ridiculousness of your assessment makes me cringe. BvS is based on frank millers dark knight. And so the characterization. I don't read comics but I know this much. Also this ain't nolans batman. This batman is old and misguided by his anger. He is turning to the very people he hates. Supes is still getting to know how to evaluate his role in the world. Batman always viewed supes as an alien and that he cannot be human. That made him a threat to the world one way or the other. By looking at the humane nature when supes is about to die, Batman understood what he has become. The very person who shot his mother n father. That moment made him realize how wrong he was. How difficult is this to understand?!! Also with super powers and destruction, death is always in touching distance. DC movies are not going to be rainbows and candies. Lose your preconceptions and watch it for what it is.

I love both DC and marvel movies since they are two different things and that variety is going to keep superhero movies fresh. But has anyone ever noticed that when some one gives a good review of BvS, they go into great detail showing that they cared and paid attention to it while negative reviews are just repeating the same old rhetoric?
@SumDumGy8 жыл бұрын
+FanelliFilms I don't really know what you mean by the same old rhetoric. Do you mean that those who have issues with the film all appear to have the same issues? If the majority appear to agree on something, most of the time that's indicitive that there may be something wrong, right? Here's my "great detail" thoughts on BvS. You can determine if they are the same old rhetoric or not: BvS fails on many levels and I have mixed feelings on it. At the end of the day, the story that wanted to be told and ultimately filmed, came to four hours in length. When a studio wants to release a film of 2.5 hours, that means that the story/script was too full and bloated for a single film. Whatever the original potential may have been, whittling four hours down to 2.5 means too many sacrifices to maintain a cohesive and coherent narrative. In short, it was too ambitious. This first issue results in the choppy, lack of flow throughout. It results in plot threads that weren't satisfactorily explored. It results in people being barred from being sucked into what should have been a hugely epic experience that had no right to fail. Part of that failure comes from trying to force too many big event story arcs into a single film. At the core, we have The Dark Knight Returns, an introduction into the Flashpoint Paradox, the introduction into a Darkseid storyline, the introduction to the Justice League, The Death of Superman, the introductions of characters Jimmy Olsen, Wonder Woman and Lex Luthor Jr. We have a Batman film and a Man of Steel sequel. We have a set up to a few future films. Most of these story arcs would have warranted a single film unto themselves but the fact that it was decided to include them all in one meant that only elements of each could be brought to the screen, and those elements aren't enough to satisfy and don't all mesh well together. Yes, there are fans who "understood" and loved the film. Why is that? Those fans have a solid background in comic book history to fill in all the blanks on their own without the film touching them. Basically, those fans are helping the film be great in their own eyes through their own memory participation. That takes effort on their part and no one should have to put in an effort to be entertained by a movie. I'm familiar with some, but not all, of the lore behind this film. I'm well acquainted with The Death of Superman and The Dark Knight Returns. I see some elements of those stories work here but many don't, because it's too much, has been chopped down, blended up and altered to take more away than they contribute. Luthor should never be able to create Doomsday. Luthor should never have been able to gain access to Zod's body or the Kryptonian scout ship. Why? Because Superman would never have left these things lying around for the government to get its hands on in the first place. Doomsday should never have been tweaked the way he was. There was no reason to change him from his original character. Kryptonite should never have been found at the wreckage of the World Engine because there's no reason for it to be tied to that location. Again, that tech wouldn't have been left there anyway. The Martha issue? Even if one understands the meaning behind it, the reality is that it was poorly executed and a rushed resolution. From that moment the plot is pushed forward. Batman sheds his armor and hops in his plane in the blink of an eye. He's fully recovered from a pretty brutal beating by Superman, enough to take down a group of thugs without effort and rescue Martha Kent. Strangely, in this fight, he's shot point blank on the head with no injury but still gets stabbed in the torso with a knife, and that's ok with him and his ability to carry on the rest of the film. Then, although we have Superman killed, it's wasted and without meaning because, not only did it happen prematurely in DC film culture, but the man is already being resurrected before the film credits roll. Sometimes it's a bunch of small issues that creep up. For example, Batman has been doing his thing for over twenty years in this film, and most people would likely have heard of him. Why then, does Clark refer to him as "the bat vigilante"? Why are the local Gotham cops behaving like he's something new on the streets to be feared or shot at? Or, Clark, having no idea who Bruce Wayne is initially at the party, as soon as he finds out, chooses to approach him and interview him about Batman. Bruce then accuses The Daily Planet of hypocrisy, that it praises Superman but questions Batman, all the while saying Gotham wouldn't trust Superman because it has a bad history of freaks dressing up like clowns. Well, how is that any different than Batman, himself? Why's Superman more a clown-attired freak than Batman is? In attempting to make a third attempt at starting a film universe, and correct the mistakes made by the preceding two, I feel they made a film that was of a lesser quality than Man of Steel, despite the epic nature of some of its components.

In the inevitable comparisons between BvS and Civil War something she alluded to clinched a thought I had. In most Marvel movies, the inner turmoil seems not so deep. They hear and see that there's concern over their behaviors and actions but the hero's themselves seldom truly seem troubled or torn. So the question of their actions is mostly external. In BvS, MoS and even the TDK trilogy, the turmoil and concern over their actions is as strong or even stronger internally than is externally. Superman, him not being a smiley Superman to me is bc even though he knows he's an alien, knows he has powers, he is developmentally, psychologically, spiritually a HUMAN. He grew up human, with human interactions, as things started to happen to him, he questioned it as most human children do: with trepidation, fear, alienation(no pun intended). Because EVERYTHING he knew was from the human perspective, so he wasn't sure who he was, where he fit and when he did own it he still, no matter how sure he was of his powers, he still sees everything as a HUMAN, because even if he 'knows' he's not, his entire frame of reference, his experience growing up is as a HUMAN. So he questions his place, his purpose and his motives etc. He's lost but knows he should do good. Batman(Affleck) is lost too and has decided to go the whole way in his attempt to stop crime i.e. killing.

zayan syed Have you seen Civil War? It has a real deep multi layered story that you don't fully understand till near the very end. You are right about Marvel films appealing to general audiences as much as they do to fans- this is something DC will be wanting to learn from after the relative failure of BvS trust me. I am also a fan of DC comics, the two stories that BvS borrowed heavily off were The Dark Knight Returns & The Death of Superman. I own both stories and have read them multiple times, both of them were 'beautifully made', but BvS was not beautifully made at all. It was really ham fisted and forced, key characters were portrayed incorrectly and the story/character motivations made no sense.

Excellent observations: "demands your attention" stood out to me, and I had the same experience when I first saw it, and because I had been so used to movies that didn't require your focus, I had to view it several times to fully grasp everything Snyder was saying, not just in dialogue and plot, but through his visuals and parallels. It has flaws for sure, but it reveals so much through repeat viewing, and that adds great value to a film's quality.

Thank YOU for making this video, Agree with everything you said. BvS demands that people pay attention to what characters say and do & demands that people think critically about what's going on. This is why Lex's motivation & the reason why Batman kills/brands criminals in this movie went over people's heads. They didn't listen & think about what the characters said & did. Lot's of people went in expecting a mind-numbingly simple fun popcorn flick with no thinking required.

That bothers me a little because it means that critics and most moviegoers now expect superhero movies to follow a set standard
@edselcalleja57818 жыл бұрын
basically the whole it has to follow the marvel movie formula is like the comics code all over again. if you think about it during the silver age DC followed the comics code which parents approved of making them popular while marvel for the most part did not, now the whole thing is reversed with their cinematic universe.

+Edsel Calleja You're right most critics / moviegoers now expect every comic book movie to be exactly like the Marvel formula, which sucks. Hopefully after enough DC movies come out more people begin to see that comic book movies can done in different ways

for years people have said they wanted superhero movies to be darker and taken more seriously and when we finally get a serious take on a superhero movie people hate it

As someone who is a fan of neither Batman or Superman, I enjoyed this movie and totally agree with you. What I also took from the movie are characters coming to terms with their places in the order of schemes. Superman and "What must I do to be accepted?" and Batman with what must I do to protect this world from them?

Here I am, Christmas morning, still caring about this movie enough to click on KZbin videos about it. And to feel relieved that I'm not the only one. The hate was overwhelming and sometimes I still wonder why it was received so negatively.
