My biggest worry (in my middle age) is closing rate with a car in front of me and them wanting to be "nice" and "get out of my way" right into the lane I'm planning on passing them in. I use my turn signals religiously. Not for the cars behind me, but for the cars in front of me and I like extra bright turn signals. In my group we have a motto "Ride predictably" not just for cars around you, but also for everyone in the group. You can ride fast and still be predictable.

I just think I'm invisible. Cars are not out to get me. They just don't see. But with tractors I always say that they are there to kill you on purpose(act accordingly). That is just to highlight that it's hard to predict where they are going or turning to field. Also every stopped car is planning a u turn.

If you think cars can't see you, what do you do to minimize this? part of the challenge.
@JamesParus

@@anxiousappliance I have at least a jacket that is not black. it has highvisibility yellow shoulders. And I have noticed that big bike like GS with upright seating position gets noticed easier than a sportsbike. I have noticed that with a sportsbike I tend to have close calls even with birds not noticing me. With GS I almost never have problems with birds. (that sounded two minded :) Also with Speed triple visibility is good. upright and two big headlamps. If car is coming from junction and I think it's not seeing me I make side to side movement to separate my self from my background. It's also good feeling to sort of test the steering so you are ready already .

I can really see why brits love to ride in my spanish roads. EVERY road we have is like Melton RD or better! EDIT: I'll take this chance to recommend you guys a fantastic road in Catalonia if you visit! It's the T-710 section between the towns of Falset, Gratallops and La Vilella Baixa. Insane stretch of road that has it all: It's long with tons of bends, wide, and the tarmac is flat and grippy!

Great clip as always 👌 Yep love what you said about safer riding on the road. I had an older guy in his 70s tell me to ride like no one sees you, prepare for someone to pull out in front of you and to ride like you are in a James Bond movie and everyone is out to get you. I've done that for the last 20years so far and its worked for me🙏👍👌😊

Hi Neevesy. I’ve been riding for well over forty years now and I have to say I wholeheartedly agree with your view. Of course only a genuine mental case may ‘actually want’ to get you, but to view all drivers in this way is defensive and potentially life saving. Another tip I’ve always found useful, is to watch the wheels of the vehicle waiting at a junction. Okay, yes, we might look at the driver, but never assume they’ve really seen your approach. So many times, they look as though they’ve seen you, then, lo and behold, they start pulling out! “Out to get you” so to speak! 😉

There's a massive difference in the mindset of a rider who's eternally vigilant, and one who is paranoid and convinced that every car is out to get them. One is rational, relaxed, aware of the risks and prepared to anticipate. The other is irrational, anxious, easily triggered and distracted by their own paranoia. It's like people who aren't capable of critically analysing media for its intrinsic biases, so they reject ALL media. Clearly the better approach is to be cognisant and prepared for potential risk, NOT presuppose it as a certainty. You'll enjoy your riding more, and you'll be better prepared to react proportionately without losing sht in the process.

As someone recovering from an accident (car failed to give way), watching this and some of your past videos describing your accident have been very useful. I was seriously contemplating limiting my motorcycling to only the weekends and use public transport for commuting as I don't have a car. Now it's been 3 months and I'm a little less anxious about commuting and encountering other vehicles during my commute. Will be more vigilant, probably start wearing a high visibility jacket (last time I wore one was during my learners). And practice more braking and swerving. Thank you!

Look forward to ever Sunday video 👍🏻 You do have to treat every other road user as if they haven't seen you, over 40 years has taught me that....slow down near junctions, go slower on roads you don't know where junctions are....I still have fun, but it's within limits set by me.. my one big accident was at 30 mph and I believed the driver had seen me...that was 40 years ago 😮 I still love riding, it keeps me sane !

Moved on to a CBR650R a year later with the full license and then a Panigale V2 a year after that and what I did tot extract the most out of the 125 was a great limited intro and helped (along with a motorcycle racing sons careful tips) with being able to ride the latter bikes safely and get more out of them!

Firstly: Riding is continually risk assessing the riding environment, the condition of the road and a million other things. My CBT instructor told us, "Treat everyone on the road as an idiot". Secondly: re painted surfaces. Down here in Oz, there's heaps of tar banding on all the roads. Can also be a wider repair than you'll find in the UK. Pretty sure in the UK they have to re-surface if the road cracks up over a certain metrerage. Not here. It can look like a game of snakes and ladders on the road as there's so much of it. Obviously tricky in greasy wet conditions. Sounds like you had a good Christmas 👍

Neevesy I totally agree with visualizing a possible crash before it happens. I have seen so many motorcycle crashes since I was a little kid, as well as people being killed in motorcycle cycle accidents, either due to no fault of their own or speeding. It never deterred me from wanting to ride, but made me more aware of what could happen if I am not vigilant for my own safety. I know there is a possibility that I may not make it home from my ride. I still love motorcycling. I live in Maryland, just north of Washington DC where the drivers are pretty bad so my skills have to always be on point. I enjoy all of your videos and dream of owning a Yamaha T-Maxx , but they aren’t imported in the US. I have to enjoy my 2013 ZX14R until then.👍🏾

Q: could you possibly do a short video on touring in europe , some basics on costs like - ferry crossings , b&b , or basic equipment to take (me and my friends had gone to wales recently and we got jt just right in terms of equipment) but for europe does it need more ? Some good routes for beginners (in the touring sense) , as always keep these videos coming .

In the past I would have said the peaks and Matlock area. We would go on group rides, up to the cat and fiddle, then over to the snake pass via Glossop making our way back to Matlock. For people looking for a route, go for it. Keep in mind I'm talking about how it was in the late 90's early 2000's. It's not the same anymore, still worth it though. The "painters" speed van and unmarked bikes, put me off. Then people from the group not having bikes anymore. Times moved on. Lincolnshire is where I head for now, from here in Nottinghamshire. I did the coast run this year over to Chapel Saint Leonards, beauty is. It doesn't have to be a set route, it's possible to make loads of ways to get there and back. Even past Cadwell.

Hi Michael! Thank you for sharing your experience with us, hope there is plenty more to come. I've bitten a bullet this year and bought myself my dream bike, a ducati 1198. Even after first ride I thought wow... This is so special and not as horrible as I thought it will be. Sure I prepared myself mentally for it being just a horrible old lumpy twin that as sinonimous with rac recovery as 2 strokes with smoke, but I loved every mile on it. My question is, why this generation ducati road bikes were always so low rated on group tests and never realy been that good road bikes in reviews even though they were winning races and championships? Thank you and best of luck to you next year!

Another great bike chat, loved your thoughts on the 'protecting yourself' aspect of riding... Fully agree with your mindset, for example travelling on a long straight 2 lane road with some car in the distance coming towards me, wait until they are a few hundred meters away then swerve away from them, logic is that they see the swerve, but more than that, they have a clear straight road so decide to 'tune' the radio, adjust the AC or whatever... I just don't want to near them in the middle of the road when they 'accidentally' cross into my lane... It is in my head, doesn't cost anything and the day some kn*b does that I have already moved away 😎

Hi Neevesy, thanks for taking the time to make these videos. Really enjoy them and have learnt a lot. Back into riding after 40 year absence and only rode for 2 years after I originally got my license ( too busy surfing with mates who didn't have bikes!) So I don't know much about bikes. Could you explain how to set up suspension or recommend a site that explains it simply. Looked at Dave Moss videos but seems to be aimed at track set up and I get lost by the end! I have a honda nc 750 with racetech gold valves on front forks plus fork air caps. Standard apart from that and rear is standard- not a lot that can be adjusted. I just don't know what should be done. It rides fine but I'm not sure if it could be improved or whether I'm just used to it. Any advice greatly appreciated. Also when you decided on your T max- nc 750 not considered?? Storage, fuel economy similar. Honda bit better for touring? Won't be offended if you say honda is bland, boring etc . As long as you don't poo poo it too much !! Keep these videos coming please. Cheers Cam.

Riding in traffic -never just sit there; always ride a little bit faster than the surrounding traffic so you stand out. I ride 'in the pocket' for as long a larger space in traffic lasts. If I see someone catching me up; I play 'you can't catch me'. For passing single cars: never just pin it: Pull up behind and give them a chance to see you; then pass like you are trying not to frighten the children... Then Pin It.

Hey neevesy! I love, and have/and still have alot of suzuki GSX-R’s, mainly 1000’s, but after watching your videos, it inspired me to buy my first ever 750. I love it, but like the other 1000’s i struggle with handlebar vibrations on long rides. Whats your thoughts on this? What can i do to help? At certain rpm’s they all can be really vicious for vibrations. Cheers!

we had two close ones this weekend, we were on trail bikes so of course using knobby tyres which suck on tarmac at the best of times - we were on welsh back roads between green lanes and one was bing being hogged by a vw transporter who nearly killed me, luckily i had a 4ft 60 degree grass verge i could ride up - importantly i stayed off the brakes because had i hit them i would have been head on as he was centred in the lane like a total arse, a normal bike would have been clattered as you would not climb the verge - literally 200 yds later an old fella in a blue 106 came blasting up a hill and round a blind bend - again i avoided by not using brakes and riding the verge, my friend who was 50 yds behind me was not so lucky - he gripped the brakes, hit the moss and 3 inch of shit on the road crest and bam - the ground came calling, luckily he and the bike skidded just out the way of the wheels... one of those days

I once heard that white lines / paint on the road have crushed glass dust in them to make them more visible at night as it lends a reflective sparkle and this is partly why they’re so slippery. Don’t know if it’s true…

i would choose the gsxr 750 over any super bike personally, i have had loads of other brands in my 30 years on the road and while some are faster or even better , the gsxr have always just been there - mint bikes

Every time I come to an intersection I mentally ask myself "who's gonna kill me" and do an instant checkdown list and prepare accordingly. If it's a junction where there's a stopped car coming across my lane or entering the flow I make eye contact and give them a head bob to let them know I see them seeing me. Also, leave your ego at home. Being correct about who has the right of way means nothing when there's a 4000 pound car sitting on your chest! Lastly, if you get away with a mistake (like mentioned in the video), use it as a training tool so you don't do it again.

Car drivers that dont or have never ridden bikes just dont have the awarness or consequences of the danger, and this is down to average learner driver courses. Riding bikes has made me a far better car driver because of my awarness. Never assume, and anticipate the unexpected like neevsy said. Defensive riding is so important. I ride imagining i have a 50 yard bubble around me and if a car, cyclist or pedestrian enters that bubble i'm ready, fingers and feet over the brakes, clutch and gear lever, and if anyone gets close behind and i have space in front, accelerate to get them out of my bubble, and if i come up behind someones blindspot i accelerate up next to them or past them and resume the legal speed. Ive prevented lots of potentially bad situations this way

I think traffic is all a part of street riding along with frost heaves, downed branches etc.. That's the skill - more than apexes. It is an active and passive thing. A couple of examples of active: If you're coming to a rural intersection, gently swerve towards a car waiting at the cross road. Instinct reacts to perceived danger and you coming in their direction activates that part of their brain. Swing away, and you are invisible. Don't stay in one position behind a car - shift occasionally - the brain tends to ignore things if they remain the same (a lot to filter and it prioritizes) - changing position triggers the car driver's brain. In a passing lane in traffic? Stay towards the slower lane, not the railing - once someone starts pulling in you lane, percieving a gap, they won't stop even after they see you. Once again - da brain. Stuff like this plus some hi viz, and decent lights. It's all part of the game - you do have some control...and hopefully plan B in the back pocket. Works for me.

You do learn through experience. I hit a, truck which hadn't stopped at a junction when 18. Now 66. Parent called to hospital as50/50. Not my fault. But now it wouldn't have happened. Don't assume a vehicle approaching a junction will stop/driver seen you. Now I'm crippled with knackered knees/legs and damaged hip. Catches up with you when older. Re back brake. On a Aprilia? Standing joke for RSV owners. 😂

I’m a relative new comer to your channel and love it - cracking biking chat. Question. Do you think the finish of modern bikes is worse than older bikes? I ride mostly every day to see the kids and then get to work with the odd scratch after work and weekends. For this duty I bought an Africa twin dct which was great for doing lots of miles in all weathers. However - after 3 winters the rusting is getting worrying. It almost looks like it’s rusting from the inside out - almost like the welds weren’t primed before painting. The smaller brackets at the rear and around the frame are rusting and paint peeling off. And yes, I clean it regularly and acf50 etc etc. Prior to this I had an original monster 900 and an old Supersport 1000.(which i still have) They only suffered from minor engine paint flaking and compared to the Honda seem much more resistant. Thanks, Rob

Good afternoon, recently thieves tried to steal my CBR650R off a secure car park, they managed to break the locking mechanism (not touching the ignition) and start to toe the bike off the car park the broken lock must of jammed and they lost control jumped of the bike causing a lot of damage when the bike hit the floor. My bike was really well looked after and in great condition. Having a £800 excess 400+400 I decided I would try and repair the damaged myself but it quickly became apparent that Honda UK prices were to high . I decided to go online and found a company with excellent reviews (not in the uk or europe) who listed all the items in Euros had a really easy website supplied everything I needed shipped it and packed it really well. The differance in price was huge for all genuine Honda parts even after import duty 20% and shipping. I saved over 50% I've always thought Honda UK charges too much for parts. This has based on my experience confirmed this. What's your thoughts on uk spares part prices?

Hi Neevesy. Just bought my dreambike which is a Ducati Panigale 1299S. I also had the possibility buying a 2020 base Panigale V4 that was around 15% more expensive. I wanted a more visceral riding experience and also a bike that could potentially be a collectors item in the future. With the 1299S being the most extreme V2 ever produced I thought it might be collectable. What are your thoughts and did I make the correct choice?

Hi neevsey, love the channel, so much so I bought a bike on your recommendation (Aprilia V4 Tuono Full Factory 2020 plate, EC2 suspension, full ackro titanium exhaust with aprilia map) As you say ‘what a bike’ Sadly sold again as used the money for something else… life.. I was wondering if you have much knowledge on retro 2 strokes, looking to probably purchase something of late 80’s early 90’s. Being an 80’s RD rider, thinking something like RG 250/400/500, Yamaha TZR 250/reverse engine, Honda NSR250/ns400… any recommendations/experiences, love to know your thoughts… Small bike, more fun 🤘 Cheers

Hi neevesy, I'm thinking of buying a new bike and I'd really like to hear your thoughts about it. So far in my riding life I have had a Yamaha YZF-R 125 and I'm currently on a KTM Duke 390. I use my bike to commute (almost on a daily basis) and of course for the famous and infamouse sunday ride. Recently I've also started to tour on it (thank you very much for the inspiration) and absolutely plan on keeping doing so. I've dreamt about a Trimph Street Triple 765 RS for quite a while but, lately, I've been intrigued by the Katana as well. What would you choose? Are there any other bikes I should look at? Enjoyable video as always. Happy New Year !
