Great chat as always Neevesy, ref. your last q and a, me and my mate thought we were fast on the road years ago, we never got overtaken, me on my Thunderace and Gary on his Triumph 959. One day coming back from Hastings after the annual May day run we were zipping along through the twisty's at Ashdown forest doing 60, 79, 80 mph when we heard a noise behind. It was the Fast Bikes team and they passed us in the bends on their back wheels. Wake up call 1, I then studyed British Superbikes for years and realized they are next level again. I then came across Moto Gp on the telly one day and realized although I am fast on the road, us mere mortals Gary and myself are about 4 stages behind those nutjobs backing it in on every corner etc. Nearly 60 now, 3 more months and that was over 20 years ago. Still love biking, on my second 1290 SDR now.

I had a '99R1 with an 05 ZX10R both completely lairy bikes, which is part of the allure and fun! The ZX10R was so fast so flickable; still have a K5 GSXR1000 which is I think THE superlative superbike of that era.

I have one - had it since new. Steering damper mandatory. Stock suspension settings were way too stiff and the recommendations of some magazines back in the day didn't help. Once softened up it works well. Get the rear wheel back as far as you can to get more weight on the front, it really needs about 50mm more wheelbase. Mine is very rider friendly and I have yet to find a street bike that I like more.

I would love to see you on a first gen ZX-10R. I have two of them, a green one & the rarer orange one. They are great bikes. The suspension was set way too hard from the factory IMHO, which led to that skittish behaviour. Nevertheless, I have always ridden with steering dampers. The first gen R1 was more of a widowmaker, I had a number of tankslappers on that model, the last one putting me in a ditch. Always rode it with an Ohlins steering damper after that. As another post says, the kawasaki is a bit like a two stroke, it takes off at 8k RPM. I also have a HP4 Competition but have just as much fun on the 10R's. I also have a 2002 R1, great bike but seating position is poor in comparison. Looking for a GSXR750 but are hard to get here these days. Modern Superbikes are just too expensive for what they offer on the road & are contributing to their own decline.

On the dangle, you're about the first person to point out that others were dangling their leg before Rossi. I remember seeing Pedrosa doing it and the commentators reacting like, 'whoa, he's got to get his bike back under control! He looks wild!', obviously not realising it was quite the opposite going on. Love the vids and thanks for the cornering advice. I'm at Almeria soon (and Donny on Thursday) and will think about the off throttle corner entry you spoke about. Thank you, Neevesy

I like how you downplay the lap times out of real racing situations. People need to understand that as long you're not competing in a real race, the question is about having fun - of course faster can be more fun, but the absolute metric of lap time does not play any role at all. If you're doing a track day, you want to make sure to have a balanced group, but if yours is the slowest group, it means you can overtake more people. And that's where the fun starts.

Very interesting observations about the tvs/India thing. O role a variety of bikes around India for about 4 or 5 years in total. Youre actually describing the national personality. Theres a certain joy and appreciation of others, not driven by jealousy and wanting or needing to be 'better' than the next person. I think its the large extended family thing so kids grow up very much loved regardless of economic circumstance. 'We' in the west are more insecure and are easily threatened, hence the need to be 'better' and we can be really rather critical of others as a consequnece. That charm and fun of Indian people stems from this comfortableness with themselves without resorting to showoffish materialism as a means of self definition. Anyway, a but deep. I very much enjoy your videos and you have an almost innocent indian charm to you!

I started using off-throttle turning as a beginner (thanks to Simon Crafar's Motovudu video series). Just make sure you're in a low enough gear to take advantage of the engine breaking on the way in and still be in the power band on way out. It works wonders!!

It would have been interesting to know what time you got and particularly in comparison to what you got earlier in the day once you had learned the track and knew where you were going. I seem to remember that Chris von Grumble did a 1:44, which is pretty quick. Chad gave his times through the day, presumably to show the difference the data and electronics were making (and he already knew the track well so improvements wouldn’t have been down to getting to know the track). Nobody would think less of you if you weren’t the fastest (or even if you were the slowest - I don’t think anyone they invited was slow.

Cheers Neevesy, I’m sure you weren’t slow…it’s the modest Brit in you. It’s funny what you said about Journo bubbles, road riders must get the same thing. I know I did when I thought I was fast on the road then went to my first track day and didn’t get out of the novice group, a humbling experience! I think one of the best tips you’ve gave is to turn the throttle to the stop out of the corners and on the straights, which I wasn’t doing on my track day. People do tend to focus on trail braking and corner speed, but there are much easier ways to go faster!

I think the bikes that were sketchy to ride, were mainly down to the tyre tech of the day. Tl1000, would tie itself in knots from that weird rotary rear shock, then over whelm the tyre. Stick a modern set on and it's ok. The shock is still an issue (most have been changed by now), but it's not as sketchy as it was back then. 98 R1 it was easy when they came out to overwhelm the rear. Again with a modern set on, it's ok. I would offer up the Kawasaki H2, a bike it's very easy to be going far to fast on. That a 240 kg + rider bike has any business doing. :)

I have to say I would love to see you do an in depth review of gen 1 ZX10. Mine has had lots done to it from suspension to carbon fibre wheels and I feel the riding experience is far more involving than the new stuff, no doubt the new stuff is faster but I feel they lack the rawness of the old school bikes. The golden days of the noughties superbikes are long gone now and the superbikes are out of reach for a lot of people, and they wonder why sales are so poor. In another 10-15 years time they will be a thing of the past as they will have no place on the road.

1st gen ZX-10R was prone to bad tank slappers without a steering damper. Agile bike, but all the weight savings didn't make it very durable. 1st gen had the front wheel recall, the generator issues, the plastic ram air duct that would sag, weak radiator mounts, and frame cracking to name a few. In a previous video, he mentioned Chris Northover was one of the fastest journalist.

Thanks Neevsey! You are typically quite modest about your skills, knowledge and insight (part of what makes listening to exactly that such a pleasure). Today, speaking of lap times, you put off the notion that you'd even be interested in 'going for it,' which I totally get. But it made me think that once upon a time, in your early days as a journo, that you might have 'gone for it,' testing your limits as well as the bikes. I, and I think a lot of us, are older riders (seems the riding demographic has shifted towards older folks - I myself am in my 60s, hard to believe) who have mellowed over time. Maybe that's a topic of interest to you and us - what it means to be an older rider. Cheers!

@17:45 Hey Neevsey. On the topic of 600 vs 750 vs 1000 track bikes with regards to tyre life, Is there really much of a difference once you in mid to fast pack of the fast group or running fast club racing pace? I'd imagine that because of the pace you're always trying to be close to the limit of traction regardless of the capacity of the bike, so tyre wear between them would be negligible no? And with the advanced tc and slide control on the newer 1000's I'd imagine you could potentially get even more laps out of the tyre if youre willing to drop the pace a bit compared to an older 600 or 750. Not that Id know a lot about that as I ride a k5 1000 😂. Take care Neevsey

Do you need to add rear braking over and above the rear wheel engine braking.

Hey Michael, after watching your series on the GSXR750. I decided to get one myself and now a proud owner of a 2011 GSXR750. it’s everything you explained, if not more. Quite pleased with it however, I’m having one slight issue with it. Since ownership, I’ve noticed it’s consistently averaging 130kms - 150kms per tank on either 95/98 octane fuel with conservative city commuting and the odd long ride around open roads which is quite odd. I can’t quite get down to the bottom of what’s causing this. It has 11,000 kms on it. tyre pressures are always run 36/36 as you would. It has a Woolich Race tools system with the ecu remaining untouched but I am making use of the quick shifter from the kit. Lastly, I recently installed a Yoshimura r-77 slip on but the mileage issues were persisting before this. Would you happen to have any insights on this?

Hi Neevesy! I'm from Portugal and looking to start doing track days, but it’ll also be my daily bike for commuting and weekend trips. I’m torn between several bikes: an older gen Yamaha R1 crossplane, a 2008 CBR1000RR, a Gen 2 Hayabusa (always loved it, especially after seeing your video of one on track!), a GSX-R1000 (k7-k8 or stretching my budget to a k9-l0), or a ZX-10R (2008 or stretching my budget to a 2011). The CBR is cheaper here, about €2000 less than the others, but I’m worried about potential oil issues. GSX-R750s are also great, but they’re too expensive. Any advice on which one would suit my needs best? Thanks!
@tactical12242 ай бұрын
I've owned a 2007 R1, 2009 R1 (crossplane engine), 2008 GSXR 750 and 2011 GSXR 750, 2008 CBR 1000 in the past and currently own (2) 2010 Kawasaki ZX10r. For all around use (street and track), the 2008 CBR 1000 and 2010 ZX10 are without a doubt the best of this bunch. The CBR engine, handling, and comfort is outstanding and I loved the bike. I owned it at the same time as the 2009 R1 and 2008 and 2011 GSXR 750. When ridden back to back, the difference in handling the 2 1000cc bikes was very noticeble, with the CBR being far more agile and easier to ride than the R1. The reason I ultimately chose the ZX10r over the CBR, was that it fit me better, as I'm a taller rider at 6'2". The CBR is a little more compact than the ZX10r. The ZX10r has a phenomenal engine and shares many of the same qualities as the CBR, with it being comfortable with a wide seat and fairly spacious layout. Comparing the CBR and ZX10r to the GSXR 750, there was no way I could ever justify choosing the GSXR 750 over either of them. The CBR always felt like a smoother running, more powerful, and more refined version of the GSXR 750 to me. It handled every bit as good as the Suzuki. My choice for you, for all around use, if you are under 6' tall would be the 2008 CBR 1000rr. It is an outstanding motorcycle in all areas...

@@tactical1224 Thank you very much for your comment! Seems like the CBR is a no brainer, more confortable for me since I'm a smaller rider and much cheaper... Appreciate the help! Cheers

@@XxDiogoxX100 Yes, if you are a smaller rider, the CBR would be a no brainer. It's a phenomenal all around motorcycle. Also, I never had any issues burning oil with my 2008 and never had to add any oil between oil changes. If you get the CBR, you will not be disappointed.

I have an 05 Green, 5K miles all stock. Looking for a K5 in similar condition. Would consider trade or cash buy.

Love you Neevesey but there's no way the original 04 ZX10R is/was 60-70hp down on the modern superbikes, mine did 155hp on the rear wheel stock (from memory) and ran out of gear at 291kph GPS so do your math. You probably could get another 15hp out of it with just a system but alas always great to hear from you. Question though; what do you think of the Yamaha MT-01? I think they look cool and have the suspension/brakes from the 04 R1 which I always loved not sure about the lumpy twin though coming from superbikes.

Nurturing young riding talent. Need more investment in that in the UK, USA and Australia so we can get kids into racing early. This is basically what the Spanish have done over the past 20 odd years and that's why they are dominating the sport these days.

lmao I guess that having the quickest journo lap time doesn't matter a great deal if your boss isn't happy with your writing and interviews.

I hope that India takes the lead in manufacturing from China. There is a lot of corruption in India. But, they are a benevolent country toward the West. And, the Indian people are fantastic!

Thing about ZX10R today is, they are usable to the max. I have a Panigale V4 SP2 30th Anniversario 916, a Gsxr1000K2, Bmw r1250gsa, burgman 400 scooter and lastly but not least, my favourite usable everyday bike, my ZX10R C1H. My Panigale ain't usable to the max for sure but the 10 is just epic. Feel free to make mine a user if you like Mr Neeves😉, I trust you not to drop it😂👍
