Coming from the era before dual compounds and more rubber than silica in the tyres, when you could kill a rear super corsa in 1000 miles on the road, I find it pretty amazing that a good sport touring tyre now is far better than the "Top" sport tyre back then. Tyres such as the Metz M9RR or even the Roadtec 01SE would be more than good enough for most road riders now, if we could only be honest with ourselves.

This is why I took a step back from supercorsa to rosso iii/iv; not even the rosso corsa. I was doing fast B pace using super corsa, and I still felt like it was too much tire. The majority of people at a club event on warmers don't need them.

Tyres for rainy day and Wet track. With S22 on my GSXR I could go round the track being very careful, and would pass normally faster people on e.g TT's. Most guys with more track oriented tyres would simply not ride as the risk of throwing the bike into thr gravel is ti high. I you decide to ride consider it as improving your road riding skills and being very genrle with the inputs and body movement. The likely of crashing is high if you push a bit - and parts of the track can become like wet ice, rubber in the track surface - water with nowhere to go - rubber wothout thread == no grip when you lean over.

Awhile back you recommended, via an Instagram message, Michelin Road 6 for my 2008 Suzuki Bandit GSF1250SA. I went with the GT version, same tire with a little stiffer side wall. Excellent recommendation! I’ve ridden in heavy rains, winds, and even on snow covered roads. And in the dry and warm weather, still Incredible tire! Thank you and thanks for responding!

Road 6 on my S1000XR and Power 5 on the GSXR. Both amazing tyres for me but I’m sure others will prefer other brands. It’s such a personal thing but for me, it’s finding the tyre that gives you confidence in the conditions you intend to ride the bike. I went out on the XR this morning in the wet and switched the mode from Dynamic (more power, less TC etc) to Road mode (less power more TC) so I could push harder in the rain. Resulted in a great ride and loads of fun through some wet twisties. I’m not advocating riding fast in wet conditions, just illustrating that with good tyres that you trust and the right bike setup, rain doesn’t have to spoil your fun…

Hi Neevesy. Thanks for these vids, so much useful information and help always delivererd without sounding condescending. Bent inside arm has been a revelation to someone whos been riding for 25 years! My tyre question. Youve said several times about OE tyres being inferior to the normal retail model. Why is this? Why does a manufacturer put a tyre on a bike that doesnt show a model in its best light? And equally, surely the tyre manufacturer would want you to buy their rubber again when the time comes for new boots? Youd assume the tyres your bike came on were the same as you could buy, if they wear out in no time or feel poor youre hardly likely to put the same on again. Once again , thanks for the great content.

On wet weather at the track (SMSP Australia) - I've only done a couple of sessions but really enjoyed it because there were only a handful of bikes out there, and on my little Honda MC22 it gave me a chance to keep up with them. I found the Dunlop Sportsmart TTs really good, heaps of feel, and could slide progressively, no snapping. I ran higher pressure than normal - 32 front, 30 rear. It's probably a little different here because the temperatures are higher, but I wouldn't knock back a wet session!

My take from your response is that you really need to be honest with yourself and what type of riding you actually do. This help me answer my own question, I got a street triple with Rosso 4 on atm, im doing atleast 2 trackdays per mounth this summer and taking a roadracing license at the end of this summer (everything is already booked) and didnt know if i should go with the Supercorsa or Rosso Corsa 4. I also know that I will do a lot of road riding which answer the question - Im buying Rosso corsa 4s as the next tyre 👍👍 Thanks!

Hello there, for the last few years I have been improving as a rider both at the track and my knowledge, all the while keeping your articles and videos as a gospel as you are one of the few people having tested niche tires such as the mk3. I have managed to get my 07 r1 on a set of mk3 to a pace of 1.33 at a track where the record is 1.19 and basically made it to the fast group while ever so slightly having some slips. Now that I have improved a lot I feel I am going to crush the 1.30 mark and for that it would be good to upgrade tires. I was between the d212 and the TT but leaned more toward the TT with the notion that they are the next level and will keep some mileage for after the 3 days of track and the fact that the D212 would need warmers. Then there are the Supercorsas, where I don't know if they are comparable with the Sportsmart TT or the D212, what differences they would give me handling wise. I have to mention that the suspension settings I had on the Mk3 were divinely compatible with the tyre wear and behavior. I am sending this message as I really would like to know your opinion on the matter for which tyre to go and if warmers are necessary for any other than the TT?

Hello Micheal, thanks for sharing your wisdom and experiences. You helped me a lot with understanding of motorcycle universe. Please keep doing it. I would like to ask yet another tire question. I have RR K67, no cat, flashed ECU, I have about 115kg in gear and I'm riding on Conti RaceAttack2 Street. I'm riding the bike on the road but, mainly between Brno and Most circuits for track days.My skills are average and the bike hold me in top half of a pack. My aim is to enjoy the riding, keep improving and stay alive. Now, finally to the tires, the Conties are great and they kept me on top of bike all the time, which is all I can say about grip as I'm still learning to feel tires grip. In addition, they are relatively cheap compare to other more mainstream tires, however I get two track days and about 2500km out of rear. In your videos you were mentioning Metzelers RR K3 and Pirelli Supercorsa SP V4. Do you think that there might be some advantage for me and my riding to switch to any of these? Maybe I can get better feedback, consistency though wear, higher mileage ... . Would do you think? Best regards Karel

Fascinating stuff, tyres are awesome. Don't understand why Motorcycle oem tyres are the cheap option and not the best. I work on 4-wheelers oem development and we spend ages tuning the tyre to work with the car and the OE marked tyre should be the best optmised for ride and handling with the oe suspension set up to deliver the brands DNA at least for premium cars. Why is it the opposite on motorcycles, I would expect the oe sportsbike tyres to be fine tuned to work with that setup and to that brands characteristics.

Dear fellow tyre nerd Sorry to hit you with ANOTHER tyre question (I know you said 50% of your questions are tyre related) but I've done a lot of research and can't find the answer. I'd very much appreciate your expert opinion. My M1000XR has a 200 rear, so I can't have my favourite tyre of choice (Road6). And from what I can gather, there are NO sport touring options with a 200 rear. So what's the most touring-biased sports tyre out there? Looking for longevity but, most importantly, best wet grip and quickest to warm up in colder temperatures? Or are they all of a muchness? I don't do track days. I've narrowed it down to: 3D Supersport S23 ContiSportAttack 4 SportSmart Mk3 Sportec M9 RR Power6 Diablo Rosso IV Keep up the excellent content, I always look forward to watching your videos. I have a suggestion for Jayhooks regarding his Scrambler. I recently swapped my tires for Metzler Tuarance Next 2 (they are a 90/10 adventure tire) and found them far superior to the TKC80 tires on road in dry and wet and they perform confidently on gravel roads, fire roads, etc up to about 2" deep sand. They are quiet, smooth, and turn in response and braking are much better.

Another great video. I don’t understand why OEM tyres fitted to a new bike have poorer qualities than one off the shelf. How would this be good marketing as say I buy a new BMW and it comes with OEM Bridgestone tyres. I ride them, find them to have poor qualities perhaps, I am not likely to replace them with another set of Bridgestones as it is likely that I wouldn’t know the replacement non-OEM Bridgestones will be better. I don’t know why Bridgestone or anyone else would do that other than give the manufacturer a cheap price. I have liked the Metzelers I’ve used and as a principle I’d trust Michelin as a brand for tyres.

Tyres have come on so much in riding life remember old Avon roadrunner Square off big time. Still remember first Michelin and Pirelli radial tyres. Used to love the old Dunlop 207rrs fast steering. Personally prefer Michelin or Bridgestone faster steering and softer tyre wall. Never liked feel of Pirelli even though grips Fab. As with all latest tyres j ust down to to feel and price. Less the out and out track day tyres. Same as push bike it's amazing how much a different make tyre or type can make to feel.

Hi Neevesy, Love your videos and advice. Question about Tyres. Way back in the day D207 was a very popular tyre as well as very infamous tyre. The only crash I had because of the tyre was with the D207 on my 2000 GSX-R750. Now I ride with my better half on a 2009 BMW R1200RT and I am using Dunlop Roadsmart 3/4 and absolutely love them. Recently I picked up a 2001 GSX-R1000 and am considering running the same tyre. Thoughts? We ride two up most of the time and I have the suspension sorted through a reliably competent race shop. FYI we ride rather aggressively with our sport bike group.

Hi Neevesy, thank you for your content. It has given me many useful insights. I have recently had Hyper pro progressive springs and 3D racing shock installed on my gen 1 MT09. The mechanic set it all up for my weight and riding style, which is fast where possible. It has transformed which was a wobbly fun and agile fun bike, to a serious (but even more fun) weapon for twisties and possibly even track days. I was wondering what your take is on the correct set up for a bike, in aspect to weight distribution between front and rear. I am sure the factory engineers of any bike have given thought to the best weight distribution for general use, but perhaps that doesn’t apply to one’s riding style or weight. I used to compensate the vagueness of the front wheel of the MT09 by using long and subtle trailbraking into corners (on the road) but now, with the new suspension, I feel like I don’t have to do that anymore. I was confused as to how to get more weight on the front, as in my experience there is not much difference when I lean my body to the front more. And what are the benefits and downsides to having a more front-oriented bike? Is this something us mortals can play with by changing the suspension setup or geometry of the bike, or is it better to ride the bike the generic way it was designed by the engineers?
@paulhope3401
@paulhope3401 6 ай бұрын
The Gen1 (especially) MT09 is well known to have an incurable weight distribution issue. Ari Henning famously once set out to cure it and tried every trick in the book inc race suspension etc etc but eventually had to accept that its deficiencies were inherant in the design. They finally addressed this issue with the Gen3 with a whopping 30mm lower headstock and revised geometry which made a huge difference but I found further improvement with lowering the bar risers to put more weight on my wrists.. and also lowered the front end by 5mm by raising the forks in the tripple trees to put the bike more on its nose and reduce rake and trail further, both make a subtle but positive difference which may or may not help with your Gen1 but thought it might be worth mentioning regardless. Caveat- I'm no chassis engineer but have done enough geometry studying to be dangerous. 😂 If the Gen 1's front end wants to push wide on power on corner exit, lowering the front somewhere between 5-10mm by raising the forks in the triple clamps might be worth experimenting with. Fairly easy to do and change back if you dont like it. Let us know how you get on with it. "My ol’ friend Ari rode this very MT-09 (Gen2) a few hours north of our office to attend the launch of Aprilia’s new RS660. When he came back I badgered him for fuel numbers and general notes on the MT, as is tradition. His feedback was clear: The fueling and suspension are still behind the curve. “I remember thinking that the updates in 2017 helped the FZ,” he said, “but riding it back to back with the RS660 made me realize that Yamaha chassis kinda sucks.” Keen Ari Henning fans will know that he had an original FZ-09 as a long-term test bike in 2014 and spent a lot of time and effort rebuilding the fork and fitting multiple new shocks, trying to fix the handling. Once he had it as good as it was going to get, we took it for a spin with a then-current Street Triple, trading bikes along the ride. Even a Henning’d FZ-09 chassis was laughed off the road by the bone-stock Triumph." www.revzilla.com/common-tread/one-tank-of-gas-through-yamaha-mt-09

@@paulhope3401Thank you for your elaborate reply. When i bought the bike, i knew the chassis was renowned for it's wobblyness, but i just fell in love with the engine and the playful nature of the MT09. I had ridden the gen 2 and 3 and especially the 3 is much better in that aspect. But still no Tuono. I have to say that with the very well set up suspension i have yet to encounter the bikes limits for my riding. Will take it to the track this year and report back, but i might still be too much of a novice to stumble accross the frames shortcommings,especially with the Hyperpro progressive spings, which i think complement this bike perfectly.

At least give us a clue... does your prefered brand begin with the letter 'M' and end with 'n' ? 😂 I'm being drawn towards replacing my MT09 SP's S22's with a set of power 6. They have similar dry performance but the more expensive Michelin are a tad better in the wet and should last slightly longer but the main attraction is that a set of power 6 will be a full 1.2kg lighter than the S22's which is never a bad thing.

Just out of interest, what tyres would you run on your bike Neevesy?

I hope you do another one of these, i have a tyre question that's been bothering me for some time!! Here it is: are tyre pressures set by the bike or the tyre? I have a Speed Triple 1200RR (which i love, not uncomfortable lol) which came on Supercorsa V3s with a recommended rear pressure of 42psi. I've swapped them for the more road orientated Rosso IVs which i previously had on a Ducati 939 Supersport with rear recommended pressure of 36psi . So should i stick to the 42psi recommended in the bike manual or drop to 36psi which i think is more normal for the Rosso IVs? I have noticed the Rosso IVs get a lot warmer on a good run out than the Supercorsas ever did. Appreciate your wisdom!!

Well Nearly every bike manufacturer since the 90's recommends 36/42 regardless of the actual tyre manufacturer. Type of riding etc. Its a one size fits all kind of thing

Ducati suggest 36\36 on most of the sports bikes. I've had a 959 and now got a V4. Try both, pick a road you know and have a go with 42psi, then drop it to 36psi. Try the same route again, the tyre will let you know what it likes with the heat in it and feeling back from it. Go get em mate. :)

@@Bow-to-the-absurd The 42 rear pressure is because they want you to have enough air for a pillion or luggage. Ducati lists 36/36 for riding solo, 36/42 riding 2 up.

love these videos as a new rider! I have a cbr650r I like to ride in all weathers but only do spirited riding when its dry, I do longer 2-3 hours rides but also do a quick 45 min ride. The standard tyres (Dunlops) don't give me much confidence, I'm torn between the Michelin road 5/6 and the Michelin power, which one would you suggest? thank you for your help. Dan

Those Michelin roads transformed my 650 and been using them through the whole winter for commuting - not felt them slip at all and they made it feel a lot more agile, great stopping even in the wet and just grip even at super low temps. The sportier ones might be overkill for a 650 on road, worse in wet/cold, take longer to get up to temp, better for track and wear faster...

@@ByronWWW thanks for your reply. I think I'll get the road 5/6 then, good to hear they make a difference.

Youd think that oe tyres should be the best as if you buy a bike with a certain tyre and it doesn't perform amazingly then you wont replace it with the same one after... they are kind of ruining there brand loyalty.....

Exactly, I have had several new Yamahas with Jap version Dunlops on them and they have all been so bad I would never buy UK dunlops to replace them. I have had a couple of new bikes with OE Bridgestone S20 / 1 /2 's fitted and they are slightly worse than the UK equivalent and don't seem to last as long but they were nowhere near as bad as the Dunlops and haven't put me off the Brand when buying UK spec tyres.

Dunlop sportmax are the worst tyres I've used in 25 years. The front 'tucks' and wants to fold all the time. Zx10r needs much better tyres. Michelin power 6 Avon 3d supersport Pirelli rosso corsa Bridgestone s23 Get rid of those dunlops as soon as possible!
