After years of trial and error, NASA figured out how to successfully grow salad in space. So what does this breakthrough mean? Are we one step closer to colonizing other planets?

New Plant Habitat Will Increase Harvest on International Space Station
www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/st...
"The large, enclosed chamber measures 18 inches square, with two inches for the root system and 16 inches available for growth height. It is designed to support commercial and fundamental plant research or other bioscience research aboard the space station for up to a 135-day science investigation, and for at least one year of continuous operation without maintenance."
Colonizing Mars Will Rely on These Next-Gen Technologies
www.seeker.com/space/explorat...
"A spacecraft would excavate the rocky material on an asteroid and then extract the water molecules that are chemically bound to the rock's clay minerals. Next, the craft would deliver the collected water to an orbiting depot, where the water would be split into its constituent hydrogen and oxygen, which can be used as rocket fuel. A space tug would then collect the fuel and rendezvous with a recently launched satellite, where the tug would inject the fuel and boost the satellite into its final orbit. "
Here's How Extraterrestrial Farming Will Work on Mars
www.seeker.com/making-mars-ha...
"The researchers suggest that before a human even sets foot on Mars, a robotic mission could land months in advance with the sole purpose of preparing the Martian regolith for agriculture. Farm bots could extract the regolith and perform perchlorate remediation tasks while introducing the necessary biology to set up the cycles necessary for plant life to thrive. The idea is to establish a viable Mars farm ahead of a human mission that's ready for the astronauts to take over as soon as they land."

Vatsyayana The surface of Venus might not be a great idea for colonising, but high up above the thick atmosphere the conditions are really similar to our planet, space suits may not be even needed, only a supply of oxigen. The gravity is almost identical to Earth also, so it might not be that bad of an idea to go to Venus and live on giant blimps. Although the scarcity of water might become a problem.

+nextgengaming ! For space to really develop, we would need a market in space, we would need colonies in space. Not colonies on the surfaces of planets and moons such as a Mars colony or a Lunar colony but colonies in space in Stanford Torus's, Bernal Spheres and O'Neill Cylinders. Government's only want to plant flags for publicity which is why NASA's hopes for a Lunar base simply got cancelled after the Apollo program and even now, the increased funding for a Mars mission really has few benefits other than publicity. Private businesses only want the smallest possible and most manageable missions that establishes branding and profit so it's also a long road to development but at least it won't just be cancelled as soon as a flag is planted. Sure more funding would be nice but what we really need is a change in why space exploration and development is funded, it needs to be funded to establish an infrastructure and market in space, it needs to be funded to search for and harvest resources in space, it most certainly does not need to be funded just to plant a flag on Mars to say we're the best in a speech.

@TheGeneralThings
@TheGeneralThings 7 жыл бұрын
grassy climer Ok that makes sense, but why would that suggest that they can't show the logo when it comes to people who actually work with NASA without possibly being sued? What concerns me even more though: why would people figure that a judge wouldn't just throw out in that kind of case? Has this been a problem before?
@grassyclimer6853
@grassyclimer6853 7 жыл бұрын
Cody Griffin yea I get your idea but leaving yourself to the mercy of a judge you haven't met can be nerve racking. it's like the Hollywood sign it's very easy to get permission to film it and many people don't and it's often not a issue but sometimes it is and if your not gonna get permission you best to just blur it out.

i know its expensive in the short term but why not just send a module designed to rotate to simulate gravity for the plants planted on the rim
@rgbii2
@rgbii2 7 жыл бұрын
Not an expert, but initially a couple of things come to mind.The energy needed to keep it spinning, which may not be a lot, would add up, plus, if it breaks down and stops spinning, everything could die. In a smaller module, it would probably have to spin pretty fast, which would exert a lot of force on the plants, soil, water, etc.., since it's not really the same as gravity. I think the biggest reason though, is with a bit more experimentation, they can figure out how to do it in low or no gravity, which means they can be grown anywhere with minimal extra effort, such as false gravity.
@EthanolTailor
@EthanolTailor 7 жыл бұрын
to fix your first point you would run it off solar power and your second point is fixed by having it run on rails with disconnected breaks so if the power or anything happens to stop the motor then the module will slowly spin down. your 3rd point is fixed by the fact that any rotation created a force outwards it doesnt have to be big at all it can be miniscule and the water will still stay in place just enough for the plant to recognise which way is down (this would take testing but i think you could do it with 0.1g easy). on your 4th point you are right plus the price tag to get a module up there
@johnwang9914
@johnwang9914 7 жыл бұрын
+Ethan Taylor It actually wouldn't take a lot of gravity through centrifugal force to solve the watering problem and an inflatable rotating Torus was designed and a prototype built for the ISS, it was also extremely inexpensive compared to the other modules but it was canceled repeatedly on numerous budgets. A failure in a centrifuge would not mean instant death as it's only the flow of water and plant development that would be affected. It doesn't take any energy for something to spin in space, only energy to start it spinning and energy to stop it from spinning. Indeed, you could just tie two flower pots together with a string and start the spinning around each other inside the habitat. Basically, I'm saying that it wouldn't even be expensive in the short term to just send a rotating module, it's just that the politicians and bureaucrats could care less so we work with what we can get.

well the only way plants that flower will survive is if they bring bees with them and set them up in a large space with the plants or the astronauts hand polenate them which will probably lead to a smaller crop yeild but it would only become and issue if they had alot of people but they can always get a machine where they have to take as much pollen from the plants and then they put it into the machine they turn it on and it sprays pollen in the areas of those plant types

This is pretty exciting, since it also means these plants will act as an oxygen source for the first colonizers of Mars. The more we depend on machines for survival, the greater chance we have at not surviving. The equipment to produce oxygen for the colonizers is likely going to be heavy and power consuming.

About 12% of Scott Kelly's DNA was permanently changed by his voyage into space, we know that because he has an identical twin as a control subject so if we grow salads in space, what will the high rate of mutation bring over time? Will we need to keep seeds in a well shielded box? It would take a 20 plus inch thick lead shielding to give you the same shielding that our atmosphere provides us on the surface of the Earth so equivalent shielding isn't very practical, would that mean periodic reseeding with new seeds from Earth?
