National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Through their world-class scientists, photographers, journalists, and filmmakers, Nat Geo gets you closer to the stories that matter and past the edge of what's possible.
Many people want to help protect our oceans-but what about our lakes, streams, ponds, and rivers? Despite making up less than half a percent of the world’s total water supply, freshwater is the lifeblood of human civilizations and critical aquatic ecosystems. Fortunately for us, there is a diverse array of biota working hard to keep these vital waters clean and healthy. In this short film by Freshwaters Illustrated, dive into a busy tropical stream ecosystem and learn how shrimp, crabs, and other invertebrates are creating a nutrient-rich environment for wildlife to flourish and humans to enjoy.

That's *El Yunque* forest in Puerto Rico. Pristine waters from up the mountain. These shrimp used to be very common all over the island rivers, but people and pollution have decimated them and that's why all rivers look so greenish and cloudy now.

Not surprised to see you here. These are some of our U.S. species not in that caradina/neocaridina line. Among them were both glass shrimp & grass shrimp, as well as various dwarf crayfish species. We do have some peculiar & beautiful species, however, they are rarely found in the pet trade (with most findings being local). So you might find the ones in this video around Puerto Rico, like you find the blue crab here in Baltimore, Maryland (which can be found & kept in freshwater).

Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.

amanos aren't filter feeders. i'd bet it's a species native to the area that isn't one of the small number of common aquarium species

sir9integra9jr I think he isn't talking about the filter feeders but the transparent ones. They look much more like ghost shrimp, definitely not amanos.
