Tia and I take the dogs with us and we go on an AZ arrowhead hunting trip out north of town. We pick up a lot of broken arrowhead pieces and we find a few complete points amongst the rubble of ancient camp sites and artifacts. Follow along on one of our weekly adventures looking for arrowheads in Arizona.

Had to laugh at your frustration with so many "busted" finds...it took me 5yrs. of looking to find my first busted arrowhead! I was overjoyed to find anything that had been worked. 15 yrs. later, I found another and a month after that, a 99% full arrowhead. Also, as it turned out, I would find 50 beads to one tip. Ha. To you folks still looking...don't give up! Thanks RO for many good tips in comment section.

Killer finds man. There is such a vast differance between there and from where I'm at here in Missouri. One question though, why not keep the pottery? You got an ancient 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle there. I'd be putting broken pottery shards together till I had a full bowl. Is there some kind of law in AZ that prevents retrieval of certain types of artifacts? I'm not dogging ya man, just saying, I started drooling when I saw that one pot sitting there looking all pretty. Thanks for the video, I'll definately sub to your channel.
@RogueOutdoorsmen
@RogueOutdoorsmen 5 жыл бұрын
We only keep certain styles and only ones I'm sure we have most of the pieces. On state and federal lands you aren't even allowed to collect pieces of pottery, so you have to be careful on what you pick up. That particular one is a corrugated jar, with no outside design or paint markings. Imagine doing a puzzle with no design or picture and only trying to match the edges up. Just not worth the time or the effort. I have glued many painted bowls and pots together over the years, but I usually don't mess with the corrugated style pots.

Those barbed wire fences are usually for cattle on state and federal land. You are usually good to hike there unless there are “no trespassing” signs. If you down load the onX maps app on your phone, it will show who owns what parcels.

According to the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979, No, it is not illegal to pick up arrowheads as long as they are on the grounds surface. You cannot dig for them. Also you cannot take arrowheads from any federal land, such as a National park or reserve, or from a Native American Reservation no matter how you find it.

That’s the difference between us. I know the law and you are still “thinking”. Born and raised local. Please do some reading. ARS 41-842 concerning AZ State lands. Says that “arrowheads are not considered artifacts”. Then read Title 16, section 470ee, sub section (g), has to do with ARPA violations and penalties. Says there are no violations for “arrowheads found on the surface of the ground”, referring to public/federal land.

I'm curious is this legal where you are at? Public or private land? Do you keep the heads?
@RogueOutdoorsmen
@RogueOutdoorsmen 5 жыл бұрын
We keep them. It’s important to know your local, state, and federal laws. We try to hunt mostly private parcels that ranchers use for cattle grazing, but we also hunt state and public lands. Under Federal law, Title 16 section 470ee subsection G, says that there are no penalties for surface collected arrowheads on public land. Under AZ state regulation 41-842 it says that “arrowheads, coins, and bottles” are not considered archeological specimens, so they are not illegal to surface collect on state lands. AZ is also a “free range” state. If the private parcels are not fenced and don’t have posted “no trespassing” signs every 1/4 mile, then you can hunt and travel on them without any trouble. Most people don’t know the law, so it is best to have copies of above mentioned laws on your phone. I have friends that have had arrowheads taken from them while out hunting by AZ Game & Fish officers, because they told them it was illegal to collect them. Know the law, even when they don’t.

Only when those items come from private property. You aren’t allowed to collect “artifacts” from state or federal lands. But surface collected arrowheads aren’t considered “artifacts” under state and federal regulations. Title 16, 470ee, subsection G. Also look up ARS 41-842.
