Thanos could have easily killed the Avengers and half the population of the Universe, but he chose not too. He didn't want to kill unless it was absolutely necessary to reach his ultimate goal. He saw what the universe would become if left uncheck and all he wanted was to maintain balance in the universe, without having to cause suffering & death. Erasing half of the population existence, in the universe is better than mass genocide on a universal scale. I doubt that finite resources and overpopulation was the main reason the fueled Thanos's goal. Thanos has acquired mass knowledge of the Universe over the years and while knowledge is power, it is also a burden. Perhaps, he saw other bigger threats that would befall on the Universe, and by erasing half the population he saved the Universe from other super power entities or even perhaps erase that super power entity existence itself. I know the comics portrait Thanos as mad and wanted to kill half the Universe to please the goddess of death. But as there are infinite parallel Universe, there are also infinite theories. I suppose that, how we interpret Thanos's action is based on one's perspective.

Nobody is the villain in their own story, he genuinely thought that was the best for all living beings and he was willing to sacrifice everything even the one person he truly loved for the betterment of the entire universe. And to top it all off he destroyed the stones after he was done, proving it wasn't power he wanted, but to prevent any other civilization to avoid the cruel fate his own people went through. His methods where brutal but "the hardest decisions require the strongest wills". All he wanted was for all the suffering and anguish in the universe to end and to do it in most merciful way, and he was willing to take all the hatred upon himself and become the "bad guy".

Everyone saying he's a villain just isn't looking at it in his eyes. The world was ending because of humans and what not. He could've went around the world slaughtering everyone in his path? No he didn't, he put his own body on the line, gave up his daughter, to make it possible to fix this problem without actually causing genocide.
