Thao Nguyen Phan - 'My reflections on the history of Vietnam, the poetry of daily life' | Tate

Step inside the studio of artist Thao Nguyen Phan and discover her mesmerising, poetic work. Through video, paintings and sculpture, Phan explores the historical and ecological issues facing her homeland Vietnam, while speaking to broader ideas around tradition, ideology, ritual and environmental change.
Her recent projects have expanded on ‘the beauty and suffering’ of the Mekong River, which runs through Tibet, China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia before meeting the sea on the coast of Vietnam.
Phan’s latest moving image work First Rain, Brise Soleil continues this exploration of the Mekong, proposing a new way of being that draws on indigenous knowledge and respect for the ecosystem.

I love how she understands history in order to create a well-crafted piece of art - be it in the form of a silk painting, or installation art or a short film. I am also an artist, and I aspire the kind of articulation and cohesiveness she has in her creative process.

what surprises me is her breath of knowledge in exploring various mediums, techniques and concepts that makes her work hard to be define as one distinctive style, but she is so distinctive in the sense that she's truly multidisciplinary and a great story teller, unique in her own way ;)

"Dangerous optimism." I like that. For a U.S. Vietnam war veteran, this is all very emotional. Looking at the industrialization, it almost seems that while Vietnam won its independence in our war, maybe the West has ultimately won. And there is a sadness in that for me. Glad this woman is there to express a more civilized possibility.

Rant- Why so much shots of stuff not art? Is this an environmentalist that does arts or an artist that does environmentalism? This is what’s wrong with art (and I like some contemporary art), this artist is mild and fashionable and makes art for a cause. It’s exclusionary to me, because it’s preachy, if you don’t go to art to learn about this specific region or whatever then what? It’s like a sophisticated form of fan art, ie. you need to have an interest in the topic or else it’s hard to enjoy. Like Beatles fans like Beatles paintings. And if Im not receptive to the work is that not equally reflective of my tastes or lifestyle perhaps, but also the artist’s task to create a bridge and a fascination? The work doesn’t really hold its own. Maybe someone could mention a work of hers they think us particularly noteworthy. I love learning about new artists just like any other artist, so I googled her to try a different angle, I just feel she caught the trend of some current social issues. It’s like joining a propaganda group to gain advantages not available before. Just like some others have stated, these type of artists “use” art to raise awareness. Just like actors using their celebrity to advertise their politics. You want to talk about a river in Vietnam? Make a beautiful or ugly beautiful work that expresses your sentiments, so you don’t have to talk and explain. Like I do a picture of ice cream and my art video is showing my my face loving it, and talking about my experiences eating ice cream with someone, it’s personal, who cares?? This social media generation, many think others want to hear them talk and look at them and know their “story”, everyone’s got a story, but what about the art?? Why doesn’t the camera focus more on the art?
