It is essential that the revelation and inspiration for a time and place is sufficient for all of its spiritual guidance; that wouldn't have just started with the International Age. A lack of knowledge and spiritual experience does not mean no one other than the wives and general companions did. It is important to see scripture as summery and layers of meaning in agreement.

Imam Ali had the quran memorized as well (he in fact was the second one after prophet Mohammad pbuh), so if it was corrupted then it would have been fixed later on by other imams Plus Allah mentions in quran that he will preserve this book himself
