I think a lot of the movies in the last couple of years have not used the height speakers. Side speakers also seem to be under utilised with most content.

I feel that movie studios are marketing Dolby Atmos for sales, assuming the consumer wouldn’t know the difference anyway, but we as enthusiasts know better.

I wish other content creators would actually call out Dolby atmos Engineers when they're are not making great atmos tracks. Shane keep calling him out on bad Atmos tracks on big blockbuster movies, and if enough of you content creators, call them out. Maybe they'll do better😅

NO, NOT ELITIST. It is a reasonable expectation the sound tracks reflect what the delivery format, source material, and space considerations will allow. These static Atmos tracks are not that, and they seem like they are just being crippled to "downgrade gracefully" to soundbars or down-scaled setups. I don't get this. Every dynamic (both object and frequency wise) Atmos track I have played through TV speakers, a soundbar, or 5.1 system, sounded no worse (nor blew any speakers) than these supposedly crippled mixes meant to "downgrade gracefully" on those setups, yet scaled so much better when I brought to a far more capable 7.2.4 setup. (And it seems Shane and others report even more so beyond.) So be it Kaleidoscape, 4K Blu-ray, or streaming, that rationale for crippling a mix just does not hold.

Thanks for another great review! Total bummer that the audio mix is lackluster on such a good movie. I feel like the opportunity was definitely there to make a killer audio mix, but maybe the majority of the effort was devoted to the video. I’ll still watch it again regardless!

I absolutely loved this movie. I saw it twice in the Theaters and its easily the best thing Transformers I've since the 1986 movie, which is my favorite animated movie period. I preordered the 4k blu ray the day it was available I liked it so much. Maybe the 4k Blu Ray will have better audio with it having more time. I can't say I'm surprised the digital version would have lackluster atmos audio. Considering how it did in the box office it probably got the bare minimum work so it can said it has atmos.

@@therealshanelee I understand it was from Kaleidescape. I used digital as blanket statement which isn't accurate. It was more to do about the work on the audio wasn't likely to anything exceptional considering its box office performance. With the version from Kaleidescape being underwhelming I don't think its an unfair assumption that the actual "digital" versions will not be better.

This review was only the Kaleidescape digital right managed copy and in no way tangible to what might be on the 4K Ultra-HD disc formats version. I would look for reviews for that release which was out December 17th, 2024.

The audio is EXACTLY bit for bit the same as what’s on disc.

@therealshanelee that can't be inferred in the video since this came out prior nor is that possible to know when this is published thus seeking an answer from a non-biased source would be best as mentioned another reviewer who reviewed the disk or has the technical data from the files to determine that. I would venture it's possible but not guaranteed since your reviewing something that has yet to come to the public or the disc based version has not been replicated yet at the time of your review.

@@therealshanelee You inferred alot in the video but have no technical or physical proof that this is the same a disk based solution would use for their main audio track on the premium format for a 4K Ultra-HD disk. In fact many times over a premium disk based solution will have more available audio tracks and commentary tracks than a digitally delivered download and managed copy. It is also not possible to know or infer what would be on the disk to compare at the time of your review since you would need to know what the data for both files has. So unless your in the QC department or have advance review of the disk at the same time this digitally managed file its not possible to speak with any confidence what would be on the disk.

Man… So recent movies with little to no height usage, Spider Verse 2, Fast X, Kong X Godzilla, Aquaman 2, this one, Wild Robot, Planet of the Apes, Fall Guy. Seems like we have way more misses than good Atmos mixes for recent movies. Really disappointing trend.

To be honest, Dolby Atmos is pretty immersive with movies I’ve heard, but I’m gonna be honest with you. I think DTS X sounds better than Dolby Atmos because it just has more capability and it has more high-quality like file when it comes to like immersive sound and whatever I watch, GODZILLA x Kong the new Empire the movie literally probably has the weirdest and probably the lamest Atmos track I’ve heard in a while because the bass doesn’t hit as much as king of the monsters or Godzilla vs Kong And I should know the Atmos effect on those other two GODZILLA movies sound way better especially GODZILLA 2014 but to be honest if you watch Godzilla x Kong the new Empire in DTS X all I’m gonna say is that it’s gonna give you the height channel effects and even more heavier bass that you really wanted in the first place

Wait, how did you the new empire with DTS X? Warner Bros doesn't release that audio format on home video on many things. Excluding the first 8 Harry Potter movies. WB released those movie on 4K blu ray with DTS X soundtracks

​@@corbinarmstrong7419in different regions/parts of the world they have different audio acceptable formats I would assume some theatre houses have preferences and if available will have that audio available in the package for playback such as DTS-X. In these regions some of these films are distributed by different companies then ones you would find in North America.

It seems Nolan has made it clear that 5.1 is his preferred format, that is how the movie is mixed, and that is what is delivered. At least those can be scored on the merits of the actual sound design.

@@LoganScottY I am curious too, if for no other reason that when a 5.1 track is played back on immersive setups, they will try to derive an up-mix from it, so whatever his sound design philosophy is, he might as well take control of the end result. I wonder if there are some technical aspects or implementation details involved. As far as dialogue, there have been plenty of very active 5.1 tracks with clear dialogue. With his movies, that always seems to come down to recording or mixing decisions more than target format.

This is a tough one, I totally get your frustrations. However, in a standard 5.1 imax this movie sounds amazing. So it depends if you are reviewing the audio mix overall or how impressed you are by the atmos mix. I saw killers of the flower moon in dolby cinema. Totally pointless (yes the picture was good) as it's not the kind of movie that justifies or needs tons of audio coming from the overheads! Love your reviews as always. I'll be buying this on 4k disc, saw it today in a standard 5.1 cinema and loved it.

If it's labeled as Atmos it should be Atmos and reviewed as such. It should not be reviewed as anything else.
