As a Marshall amp guy, those original Valvestate 8100's did sound great for that metal tone. The key to those were that "Contour" knob. The only down side to those amps were playing live and trying to get some volume with out it squealing like a pig. Chunk, chunk, wee, chunk, chunk, wee, lol. Definitely needed a noise gate. You can get very similar tone by using the Marshall JMP-1 preamp/ BBE Sonic Maximizer and scooping the mids.

I found a pile of ooooold tapes a while ago, listened back to one gig recording and thought "Man, my old JCM800 sounded so damn good that night, so much better than the other tapes..." - Then I remembered that I'd actually used a Valvestate 8080 on that night as my 800 had blown up for the umpteenth time. Funny how things change when you listen with you ears rather than your eyeballs. I do remember the power switch being a weak point on those 1st gen Valvestates, mine ended up with a pick jammed in the switch to keep it on.

A friend gave me a Valvestate and when I did some research on it, I noticed a lot of people hating on it, but I think it's pretty neat. I stuck a Fuzz Face in front of it and was able to get all sorts of cool sounds out of it. It's not my primary go to amp but I still like it, and yea, definitely underrated in my opinion.

I LOVE "Clayman". It's my favorite In Flames album, mainly because the guitars SOUND so good. BTW, it came out in 2000. Twenty years ago! And Chuck Schuldiner used a Valvestate to record the last Death album, and to play live.

I love all my valvesate amps. I have had an 8100 since it was new,then got a VS100 when it came out. Both sound killer Boosted on the front end and with a graphic eq in the fx loop. They did it right with a tube preamp because it takes a boost really well. I also have a valvestate 1x12 combo that I closed the back on and added an eminence legend. I've had so many comments on that combo amp it sounds friggin killer!

YEEES I've been so waiting for the valvestate video! In the music school where I learned guitar years ago, there were multiple Valvestates in every room so everybody could use a decent sounding amp during lessons and rehearsals. My guitar teacher, who ran the school, collected them 'cause they were very easy to find on the used market, cheap, good sounding and reliable. 10-15 years ago there weren't so many cheap but good sounding amps like the Joyos etc. that we have today. Damn this is triggering some nostalgia...Now I want a Valvestate too!

My first "real" amp was an 8040 when I was a kid and I loved that thing. Unfortunately it got stolen and since then Ive owned alot of much more expensive amps and have even built a few of my own. 20 years later my sister's boyfriend picked one up in a pawn shop. I took one look at it and instantly knew it was my old amp! I was expecting it to sound shitty to my more mature ears but i was instead reminded of how good the amp really was! Adding bass guitar really helps with making it all sound better. That is what stuck out to me, then the 5150 sounded better by itself rather than blended with the valve state. My buddy has a 1x12 valve state, its a great amp for classic rock. Great video Glenn! You really had my wheels turning with this one.

I worked hard cutting lawns all summer and got my grades up so my parents would lend me some money and when I was 13 years old I bought a Gibson Les Paul Studio and a Marshall 8100 Valvestate with two 4x12's. I thought I was the shit at band practice with my Marshall stack when everyone else had little combo amps. Still have both, 27 years later and all I've had to do to the Marshall 8100 is clean the pots a few months ago. Great amplifier. Still use it, however my Orange CR120 head has been getting a bit more use lately.

I bought one of these on a whim because it was dirt cheap. I liked it so much I bought two more. Such an amazing amp. Here's a cool trick to make it sound better: Turn the FX volume all the way up, then turn off the FX loop with the button by the FX volume knob. It really tightens up your midrange and makes it less flubby.

Yeah just lacks mids (I think the 8100 is the better amp), so the FX knob trick works, the mids knob is like treble and the treble is like presence. When dialed right you can change the sound easily with just the contour knob.

The cleans are highly dependent on Gibson humbuckers. The amps don't even play nice with a stock Strat. Active pick-ups are out of the question. The valve preamp is too hot.

I had a valve state vs265r back in the mid 90s and it was a beast for gigging. It was I believe a 2x12 65 watt times 2 amp. But it had powered out to cab and running out to a marshal 4x12 cab was amazing

This is the second time I'm hearing you talk about how good a Valvestate 2000 AVT is. I had them on my mind years ago and finally bought one after you said how good they were the first time. AVT 50 Combo. Got it just before Christmas. First thing I did was shit can the 18 year old Marshall 12ax7 tube and put in a new JJ ECC83S in it's place. Noticing the back of a JCM 900 was open I did mine the same way. Finally I bought it a Weber Legacy 12 speaker. So for a little more than $300.00 I have an amp that totally kicks ass.

You can get some pretty amazing tones through amp blends! One of my favourites is blending two amps, one with a higher wattage (Above 15w) and a 12 inch speaker with a smaller low wattage amp with a smaller speaker (5w + 8 inch for instance). Phil X does something similar!

As someone who has multiple Valvestate heads here is some general info for potential buyers!: There are 3 Versions of the Head that you could/should buy. That is the 8100, the VS100 and the 8200 (wich is rare). The 8100 is the original one. First Gen. If you like the sound of Death get this one. Its the exact amp that Chuck Schuldiner used. They are good amps but the reliability isnt all that great. They tend to have problems with caps leaking and pots doing all kind of scratchy noises. Then there is the second gen head, the VS100. This is my go-to. It´s important to know that the Valvestates are neither solid-state nor valve amps. They are a hybrid system where the preamp has a 12AX7 tube in em. The big difference between the 8100 and the VS100 is that the preamp tube is only active on the clean channel for the 8100. This gives the amp a bit different OD sound. On the VS100 the preamp tube is used for both cleans and OD1+2. If you can´t find a 8100 (wich is likeley since they are getting harder and harder to find) or are scared because of reliability issues go for this one! They are great amps wich can get you basically the same tones as the 8100 but are way more reliable due to having better build quality and thicker boards. Also they feature a "power dimension" switch wich gives them a ton of low end. I am sure if Glen would have used that in the mix with the 8100 it would have sounded monstrous. In general a very flexible head. Then there is the 8200 wich is ridiculously hard to find. Its a stereo version of the 8100 and features a chorus. If you ever see one, buy it!! Prices are rising. You may wonder why I am telling you this. The reason is simple. As stated i own multiple of those heads. They are dirt cheap and usually go for 200-300 dollars. They will outplay E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G in that price range with a good cab. Get yourself one before they are gone. Many of the 8100s are already fucked because of the neglect they´ve gathered since the 90s. If you are for a good metal tone on a budget go for one of those instead of this fcking amp sims and everything! And if you want to make some money you are good to go as well. As said prices are rising! It´s not really easy to find a lot of info on the internet about those amps so I hope I could help you all!

I bought the 8100 valvestate around 96' and the only reason was because it had the most distortion out of all of the amps there in the room. If I had understood boost pedals back then, I may have bought a different head. But you can get get good sounds from it, as Glenn said, you have to really dial it in and mic placement is absolutely crucial for a decent sound.

bought a Valvestate like 7 Years ago... cost me 300€ Head plus (shitty) Cabinet, but the Amp was good, and combined with a Tubescreamer, did a great Job. I still have it, but i've switched over to using just my Multi-FX live

I love how you are not the best guitarist but always find killer riffs, that what makes you a great player PS : after 12 years of guitar I just bought a Valvestate 8080 for nothing. Definitely a great value for money. The good classic Marshall sound, I love it !

Gleeeeennnn, when you said Marshall Valvestate it blew me away cause that makes so much sense. That amp, in combination with the Boss HM-2 was the standard for the swedish death metal tone from the 90. Why didnt i think of that??? goddammit!! so many years of research and it was always on my face!

Actually was a Peavey bandit... You can see a lot of amateur videos of Scandinavian bands in the early 90s using this very amp.

Back on the clayman album, they were using 11-56 string gauges and he has been using the Les Paul forever, a lot of the time he played the neck pickup as well. This was pretty damn good too nice job Glenn!!! Oh and by the way I play solidstate amps, tube amps are great but they're too temperamental for me they sound different in different climates just to my ears, what I love about solidstate amps is I can always count on it, it's reliable and sounds the same everytime.

I love the old Valvestate VS100 amps. Had one since the late 90's, and just bought a VS100RH (head) the other day. So I can stack it on top of my Blackstar S1-100 EL34B head, and plug it into my Blackstar S1 412 Pro cab, when I feel like playing it. 🤘🏻
