After all the comments on the first video saying to lift it up with her turned around I can absolutely say that is harder than how we did it originally. All of those videos were people picking up cruisers with a much lower seat height and center of gravity. Simply grabbing the handle bars and lifting it up was the easiest way for BOTH of us to lift a sport bike.

Jaret Campisi I use the handle bar method. GSXR-600 and Ninja .... On a heavy cruiser or full bagger, squatting would seem more appropriate, but I admit I never attempted on these bikes.

Sorry if this has been suggested, but 572 comments...wow! Anyway, I have a BMW F800ST and I use handlebar straps attached to spots front (handlebars) and rear (like subframe) and then grip the straps. This allows my legs to start with less flexion. Like doing squats but only going partway down. Handlebar straps are widely available and cheap. Easy to throw a pair in a tank bag.

The first time Jaret did it was the better way for strong guys the 3rd way with the handle bar would have been easier if she used her hips and legs to walk the bike up because she didn't use her hips and legs to lean against the bike while taking small baby steps it made it harder for her. The 2nd way with the back to the bike is not for sports bikes that's only for cruisers.

Funny vid. I have dropped my own r1 a couple times. And at MMI they make everyone pick up a goldwing. The handlebars is use on sportbikes. Back method is used on cruisers. And one hand on tail and one on handlebar is used on dirtbikes.
@nicolivoldkif90967 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if the sportsbike is on terrain that doesn't give the tires the best grip, which is not uncommon if it went down, trying to do the back to seat can just cause you to push or spin the bike on the ground causing more damage to it. This comes from most sportsbikes able to lean over significantly more making it harder to get purchase to lift off of your back to the seat. I've tried it a few times with my S750 to try it and I can't even though lifting it up by the handlebars is easy for me.

This is one of the best ways to pick up bike, when it's performed right. At 3:31, she would totally end up hurting her back. She is basically standing and using her back muscles to pick up the bike, which is wrong. The idea is to use your leg muscles to pick up the bike. So, basically, you sit with your back straight, then you slowly get up, only using leg muscles and without change of posture.

I had a Kawasaki Voyager 1300 cc touring bike 915 lb's that fell over a few times and I had to set it back up on the side stand by my self back in the early 90's. I did not use the back to the bike way either. I ride a Honda Gold Wing GL 1500/6 SE now. It's over 800 lb's it has not fallen over so far so if it ever does I'll let you know how I got it back up right.
@mark-12347 жыл бұрын
You mentioned it and I will confirm that using your back to pick up a bike is more for heavy (800+ lbs) cruisers, not sport or other lighter bikes. And when using that method, you don't just lift with your legs. You also push against or into the seat with your butt, pulling the lower handlebar in while picking up, which turns the front wheel down into the pavement, giving you a better fulcrum to roll it up on. One of my bikes is an 83 Venture and I can assure you picking it up is much easier using this method.
@jassinyacks12227 жыл бұрын
I lifted my first few bikes by the handlebars for years until I bought a real bike!!! 2017 HD Road Glide Ultra, 929 lb loaded and with touring cargo you can be looking at over 1000 lbs. After dropping it once I found that hands down the best way to lift a heavy bike is with your back to the bike using your legs to push. As a lifter you should know that your form is key, lifting with your back and arms will only cause injury.
@Roadstar16027 жыл бұрын
She's doing it wrong, my friend. That's why she's having trouble. She needs to basically be forcing her butt into the seat with the power of her legs, not trying to stand up while holding it with her arms. It's incredibly easy once you do it right, and it doesn't matter if it's a sport bike or cruiser.

From my experience (250 cc dirt bike to 1100 cc Gold Wing), I just face the bike and grab the handle bar at both ends and just pick it up with proper form, but with the Gold Wing and generally bigger bikes, it makes a lot more sense to not put so much stress on my back. So the back-towards-bike method works great for BIG bikes, or anybody that doesn't have awesome upper body strength. You seem like a cool guy btw, keep it up. :)

I was told that if the bike is on its left side, turn the handle bars to the right to that the front wheel points up. Then use both hands on the left bar and use the leverage to pull it upright, Ideally facing away to keep your back straight. It helps to roll up on the wheel in that direction. (Or get a big guy to do it for you??) Greetings from across the pond.

At a rally, a lifting demonstration involved a female wearing heels, she lifted a GoldWing using the backing up way using mainly her legs, but grabbing the seat handle and bars. Lifting up with her shoulders and back is tougher. The big thing is to make sure you ease up as it lifts, or it can go over the other way. I think she definitely could get it up. (intended double meaning.)

the whole back to it to lift it, really only helpful for small, little people and works best if your bike falls on its right side, u can put kickstand out so incase u lift it to far the bike wont go crashing to ground automatically.

What works for me- Like she did at 4:58 facing the bike, but stand closer to the front, switch hands so your arms aren't crossed and push the high side grip away while lifting the low side.
@grnhrntskato7 жыл бұрын
Hope you found the right way to lift a touring bike. I taught my wife on her first bike (644 lbs). Only way for a woman is to put the kickstand down first if it is on the side sticking up in the air. Turn your back to it, put your butt on the seat and get a hold of the handle bar and edge of seat. Put the legs out far enough from the bike that it is not a complete dead lift. Take small steps backwards so the bike is lifted in small increments. Once it is upright, set it over on the kick stand if you are on the right side or put the kickstand in place if you are on the left and set it down. My wife still uses this method to pick up her latest bike, Victory Vision Tour at 1,414 lbs.
@harrybrown48157 жыл бұрын
All depends on the bike what it is used for, where you are when you have dropped it and how much help you need if any ,if you are injured. But in the end it is down to the amount of leverage to over come the weight there are no right or wrongs just easier and harder ways depending on the bike and you .
@Teh5097 жыл бұрын
Nice vid mate. yeah this method is really for heavy bikes or smaller people. Right hand on clutch bar and left on a suitable grab rail or structural part. Handle bar method works but you have to be careful with heavier bikes not to damage the grip. Also the bars will be on full lock to left.

@touristguy877 жыл бұрын
if you're going to lift it backwards then you need to have your back straight, even bent backwards a little, and push with your legs. When you start off bent over in the fetal position then you have to straighten your back while lifting the bike which defeats the purpose. To me the easiest way is simply to turn the handlebar so the wheel turns to the high side, so the lowside handlebar is as far away from the bike as possible, maximizing the leverage at the handlebar, and pull the handlebar with both hands in a circle around the contact-point where the wheels touch the ground. Works easily every time. Done that way, you're not trying to lift the bike up, you're just swinging it around the tires. All the weight stays on the tires.

Love the comments from (mom?) 😂 Great vid!! I'm 100lbs and 5' tall, I used to race a 2007 Gixxer. Racing means crashing and I had to pick that pig up a few times if I wanted to keep going. Not sure how much the adrenaline helps! LOL It still felt like moving a house, but if could do it, any girl out there has a chance of picking up the average sport bike! If this had happened on the street or during a track day I think I would have thought that for sure there is no way I could do it and just waited for one of the guys (yes they donflock to help). But the first time I crashed that bike was during a race and I was pissed off that I took myself out and thought I might as well try otherwise I'm stuck sitting here on the side lines waiting for the race to finish before any one can come for a pick up. And whatta ya know! 🙈 I had to pick up from towards the front of the bike, just like your 2nd try. That's where all the weight of those bikes is. I would pull up on the handle bar that was on the ground (downed side) with both hands trying to use mostly my legs as not to hurt my back, just to get the tank up off the ground far enough that I could sort of get my ass under the tank and then prop the weight of the bike with my legs. Take a much needed break and breather. Try doing this wearing a suit, back protector, and helmet! Then it was pretty much like doing a squat from hell while holding the handle bar just to make sure the bike didn't keep going the other way once it was up! There is no way in hell I could pick up a sport bike the way you did on the first try. That's how I was taught in rider training as well and I'm sorry, it just doesn't work for smaller or weaker people and from physics point of view just doesn't make sense for a sport bike. I only figured out what worked for me through frustration fuelled trial and error. It's awesome to see some one do a vid on this!

I had a complete brain fart one day with my 533 lb cruiser. I pulled up to park and as I was dismounting the bike, I realized too late that I'd forgotten to put the kickstand down. I did manage to keep if from "falling" onto it's side but, it still went over far enough for the handlebars to touch the ground. Here I was all alone..........not a soul in sight, trying to upright this heavy beast. Since I'd just been riding, finding places to grab that weren't hot was a bit of a challenge. What finally worked was, lifting it by the tank and seat up to about a 45° to 50° angle, then bracing it with my legs while I switched my grip to the handlebars to finish lifting it far enough to get the kickstand into position. It took just about every ounce of strength I had but, I finally did it.

Using your back is crucial if you are on a heavy touring bike or a cruiser. It's the only way to get 1000+ pounds of bike uprighted. If you have a smaller café bike or racer, certainly it's going to be more difficult to back your way up because the bike sits lower on the macadam. Best bet there is to use the handlebars or wait for someone do give you a hand. We haven't ascertained if the person who dropped the bike is injured, at which point the bike can stay where it is...

First way: You need to lower your center of gravity and are basically doing a dead lift... Purely legs... Also, you should be grabbing the handle bar and the rear foot peg, or if you can reach, the frame above the rear tire. Second way: You are supposed to turn the tire away from you at the same time which causes the tire to lift the bike up, just be careful not to let go of the front brake as the bike COULD be in neutral and start rolling. Third way (if you have great clutch control and brake control while off the bike): Use the throttle to pull the bike up. Super slowly... Saw a guy do this at the track the other day, like a boss...

For me (I'm 64kg pretty weak guy) the best way so far is to pick up the bike with my back (walking up the bike backwards). Just picking the bike up as you first did was impossible to me. Lifting with your back to the bike is a method for lifting heavy adventure bikes like the r1200gs, which don't of course have wide bars and often have panniers and weigh substantially more than your sport bike. Watch a BMW off road training video, or similar, and you'll see the lifts demonstrated.
@MarcGXE957 жыл бұрын
Just a small pointer, you just need to roll it up and not lift it! When you are back to the bike, keep the but low and push up and back, not just up! From a R1200GS Adventure dude! Now that is top heavy!

@GregHassler7 жыл бұрын
There are at least 3 solid ways to lift a bike, probably more. First off, the back into it method never works for me either. And I agree it's always shown on cruisers. I'm well over 6' and I have to bend down way too far to get any useful hold on the bike, or my legs are too bent and have no lifting power (which is also bad on the knees). The handlebar method does work as well, generally I've found on lighter bikes. Some cruisers have long handlebars and weak risers and it doesn't work as well as they flex too much. Most of the time I lift with my stomach or chest to the seat with legs stretched way back, pressing up in little steps (more horizontally than vertically). Basically similar but backwards to what you're trying here, but much easier to find hand holds and more natural. It doesn't hurt your back if you keep it straight. Now I'm normally lifting a 500+ lb adventure bike with a high center of gravity, and doing it in a river or sideways on a rocky hill with the bike half stuck in a bush and a vine wrapped around the handlebar. If you can't lift a bike on a clear level concrete surface, get a different bike because that's the easiest situation ever. There are many different types of bikes and many different types of bodies, anyone who thinks there is one and only one proper way of lifting a bike isn't very experienced.

With the handlebars lift, if you hold the front break and turn the front wheel in the direction you are lifting it makes it even easier.

Picking it up backward mainly uses the legs, which are stronger than arms or back muscles, and less prone to injury that the the back/spine. Of course if your girl friend is a wimp and bends so far forwards when trying to pick it up that she is almost touching the ground with her forehead, she is using her back not her legs to try to lift, so it won't work, but then if she can't pick it up properly using her legs she would not be able to pick it up using any method at all all short of a recovery truck, but has probably avoided a pulled muscle in her back and 6 months in traction. The idea of the backwards method is that a wimp can pick up a Harley, no pulled muscles.
@MotoErgoSum7 жыл бұрын
Easier to face the seat and do a deadlift. One hand on a grip and the other under a passenger peg, subframe, or the tail. Just make sure the bike is in gear if you're lifting from the clutch side. Brake side, squeeze the front brake as you lift. Holding both bars is awkward and puts you over the bike as you're trying to lift.
@hollowaysteve7 жыл бұрын
The gixxer 6 is quite light and you are are a fairly big guy used to lifting weights. For a lot of people and with heavier bikes lifting a bike with ones 'back into it' is easier. Also, When I have had to do it, I don't position myself at the seat. I am more along the tank so I can get a good grip on the handlebar and my other hand is around the seat area. Obviously it will vary a little depending on the bike. Your girlfriend (while gorgeous ;-) is quite petite and shall clearly struggle if she positions herself at the seat. The tank on those is quite wide so it won't be the easiest bike for her to lift up like that.
@highsnburgers48627 жыл бұрын
That's the Gold Wing method. That R3 lays too close to the ground to lift that way. It's also light enough to just pick up. Hold the front brake on during the lift, when possible.

Sorry 2 cents one more time. Seat height doesn't come into play especially on it's side most are 28-30+ inches sport or cruiser. It's the handlebars that make it a tad harder. Christina needed to have her arms and back straight legs more forward not tucked under. The bike tires dig in the upper body with slight tension is just the connection to the bike it's all a leg press. Why did I bother to comment? It's obvious you guys care, you bother to youtube. You reach a lot of motorcycle viewers and it's painful to think someone could injure their back lifting improperly. Your guys are bodybuilders, and sportbikes are generally less than 400lbs a brute force lift. A bagger lifting your way ouch it's even a challenge the right way. Safe rides to all!

Nice exploration you two 👍😊 everyone's gotta find their own way with their body and their bike. A bit more practice and a sightly different bike and you'll be fine Christina ✌️ I love the simple enjoyment you have of cool machines 😉 I know that one, it's a lot of fun hey!

I know some folks like to pick up a bike this way , but I don't do it this way . I do it the regular way . By the way , you should be picking up the bike from the side opposite to the side stand , or the bike will topple over . Cheers !

not to be picky but would it be a little different in gear? gloves, pants (optional) and jacket?
@mouldycontroller75967 жыл бұрын
i mean the friction and grip i mean, i know you are looking for the easiet way for her to pick it up but it just pondered on the mind

Heavy cruzers are way different. Take a touring Harley Davidson at 800 pounds and since they all have a crash bar in front of the engine in sits a litter further off the ground when down. With that in mind the only way a smaller person, or anyone for that matter, can right it is to keep back straight and use legs to walk backward lifting the bike upright. Lots of videos online showing very small ladies getting this done. First video of yours that I have seen and enjoyed your comments. Ride On...

some sport bikes are way heavier than this bike. If you were going to face away from the bike, you would have to grab the bike somewhere with straight arms to use mostly legs. Trying to sit as high against the seat as possible , like just pushing against it while the bike just starts to rise, then you inch downward against the seat further all the while positioning your legs for a better stance and lift. A girl sure better find the best place to grab the bike, especially on a sportbike. If you lose grip with your hands or shoe grip, your bike may come crashing down. Facing the bike as he did moving into it using a good stance with leg power is a great way to safely lift and hold on to your bike securely.

The method grabbing both handle bars and using your legs was the best! No wonder how she did it almost by herself
@JaretCampisi7 жыл бұрын
yes absolutely agree. Thats the way her and I will both be doing it from now on.
@b.e.n23577 жыл бұрын
Another way is to just hold one side of the handlebars and "squat" it up
@rick1027able7 жыл бұрын
It's leverage. She has to lean into the bike where she's almost engaging the suspension. So she's actually pushing it back instead of lifting up. If you push it away from you, the tires will catch and it will tip upwards

Since cruisers sit lower and wider, when they do lay down, they are not as perpendicular to the ground. Hope I made sense in that statement. Although I did see a video of a little old lady picking up an Electra Glide doing this method.

What ever way you do it, make sure it's either in gear [obviously switched off], or you're holding the brake. I've picked mine back up and it started rolling off and I dropped it again.
@JimsEquipmentShed7 жыл бұрын
Not only is the seat lower, most of those bikes had crash bars, and that changed the CG 100%. Its much easier to stand up a cruiser than a sport bike.
@keepthinking26667 жыл бұрын
no still you hold the break to stop it from rolling and its easier to lift
@Error-kl9op7 жыл бұрын
No matter how small you are and how heavy the bike is, once you drop it and the adrenaline starts pumping, you'll lift it with one hand
@PMolk7 жыл бұрын
I think the key is to use legs instead of back/arms. Also if you're lifting from the other side the stand will stop it toppling the other way.

I think the best thing to keep in mind was the comment about adrenaline after a crash or even just a simple tip over. It's a crazy feeling for sure!

interesting to see that it was harder to lift that way, I use the bar method myself because it works and i can keep my footing on gravel better.

a 6" long strap in your right hand, going to the left handle bar grip, would put you in a much more powerful posture (bending forward to reach that grip puts you in a horrible compromised position, low strength, and high possibility of injuring your back!) .... such a strap could be a single loop of 1" wide nylon material, maybe a good emergency item?

Another great video you two, Keep doing your thing and F all the haters on here. Christina I hope this won't stop you from getting a bike soon, I'm sure you won't be riding without Jaret when you get your bike so if you lay it down he will be there to help you pick it back up. Jaret your a braver man then me for laying your bike down like that just to make a video. I'm can't ever see myself laying SUB ZERO down just to see if my wife could pick it back up lol. But this was a good video because I never thought about how women pick their bikes up if they ever lay it down and nobody is around to help them so thanks again for doing this video. Keep them coming you two and I hope to see you both riding soon.

good job showing the different ways to pick up the bike - just note for us older riders lifting the bike facing like you do is a lot harder - you have the power now at your age but as you get older that doesn't always work. thank you for doing this video though. Informative. Also, ladies will get help way faster than us males. btw, I'm 50+ and have been riding since I was 19 - your way is not bad just not the recommended for new riders starting to ride. Remember you are showing the best options in your vids not just your way. :)

It helps if you have the bike in gear so it doesn't roll. Or, tie the front brake fully closed.

The best advice I ever received about riding gear was, always dress for the crash because sooner or later, there will probably be one. I live in PA and always rode with full gear, even in 90 degree heat.

Dude, don't care what others say, I had to pick my bike up a few times and did it your first video way. Much easier and less awkward.
