I heard older folk, especially males, in the 1970's putting younger men down for having long hair and saying that exact phrase: "Is that a woman or a man?" They knew it was a man, but they had to throw out what they considered an insult, as if being a woman is a bad thing. Hah!

Bob Seger is a great rock singer, songwriter & musician known for his raspy powerful voice. He wrote & recorded songs that dealt with love, women & blue-collar themes. "Turn The Page" is my favorite song by him. Love the sax solo. He has so many great songs especially in the 70's-80's such as "Old Time Rock & Roll", "Against The Wind", "Like A Rock", "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man", "Mainstreet", "Still The Same", "Hollywood Nights", "You'll Accomp'ny Me", "Roll Me Away", "Shakedown", "We've Got Tonight" etc.

There were times when Bob had hair down to his shoulders. There is a montage-style video version of this song that shows how his look changed over the years.

1stly, I loved your reaction. 2ndly, Bob is such an ICON! Listen to more, like Night Moves, Like a Rock, Old time Rock & Roll. That's just to name a few. His songs are timeless. Keep em' coming! Sending love, peace & happiness, always. 🫶🏽✌🏼👏🏼

I had never heard any of this song before but that ending was PHENOMENAL. Don't get me wrong, I love the lyrics all the way through but that crescendo was brilliant! Thank you Bumblebee Whisperer for putting something different in front of DJ (and those of us who have never heard it before!) Thank you for this reaction DJ! Well deserved fan in there too...

Bob Seger didn't record a studio version of this song. This was live in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan. He still lives there. He's a hero here in Michigan. I see him occasionally walking his dog. He's the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet.

Great reaction! You indicated you know Old Time Rock and Roll... other Bob Seger classics include Like a Rock (which has been on truck ads for years here in the US), Night Moves, and We've Got Tonight. They are all quite spectacular.🎉

When you showed inadvertent question hearing the line "Is that woman or a man", this song reflects a time when super long hair on men first came into modern being. It was a counter-culture look. So while that line was said as an insult to long haired men, in fact, from the rear most often you couldn't tell men from women as their hair was the same !

Bob Seger! Always a favorite. Try Kathmandu and Shakedown if you get a chance. I believe that Shakedown was used for Beverly Hills Cop 2, with Eddie Murphy. It's a good one to listen to when you want to get your blood pumping. ❤😊

I have to say, I've loved this song since I first heard it, searching it out on AM radio and 8 track that my mom had. I've always felt that I'm always performing, always on stage, always projecting a persona, and that can get a little bit exhausting. Learning to tune out the background and what other people are saying is empowering.

I can still remember hearing people say "Is that a women or a man?" when they saw a man with long hair in the early 70s. This was written when he had been touring for years and had been right on the cusp, but never quite breaking through. He didn't even have the money to pay the studio band for the whole album when this song was first recorded.

I’d recommend checking out the remainder of his catalogue. Although he has some upbeat songs (Old Time Rock and Roll), most of his music is much like this-contemplative and expressing a longing. His music generally leaves me feeling incomplete, as if I’m missing something in my life.

It was us baby boomer males who were growing our hair long- our parents and grandparents who said that stupid “woman or a man?” thing. Granted, there was a small slice of our fellow guy boomers who might say such things- boys with their own private issues and hang ups.

The first couple decades of his career, there was a strong general prejudice against men having long hair, and many people were quite willing to make their opinions known with cutting remarks that were meant to be heard, but not shouted. If the person being insulted reacted, that reaction could potentially be viewed as provoking a fight, rather than reacting to a provocation.

Yup. Saxophone. That was back in the day it was a standard way to put down males who let their hair grow, not necessarily androgynous.

Love this song. Couldn't get past the 7:20 mark though. Stopping every 4 words to give such insights like not being 100% sure but this might be about being on the road after nearly every line was about being on the road. Including, "Here I am, on the road again."

Man, you need to let the song tell you the story. In my opinion, you pause way too often. I would like to hear your comments at the end of the song, but not when you stop the music every few seconds to interject a comment. Remember, most of the people listening to you already know the lyrics and know the story the singer is telling. You dont need to explain it to us. I am not trying to be critical, and my comments are not mean-spirited. I like your reactions, and i am hoping to give you something to think about as you build your site.
