@@the_guitar_trooper And, unlike then, there are myriad entertainment outlets. None of them would have a market share comparable to any successful network broadcast. Milton Berle 40 million viewers was one-fourth of the population of the U.S. in 1956. Popular music in particular has become so balkanized that it would take a rare talent like Taylor Swift to have broad appeal. *thinking* But, like Elvis, her roots are in country music, so that might be bucking the trend towards babelism in the music world. On the Ed Sullivan show 3 months later (9/9/56), 60 million Americans watched. They finessed the "Elvis the Pelvis" style by only showing him above the waist. These days, only the Super Bowl pulls in a comparable fraction of viewers. But by the time a performer lands a gig there, they already are superstars. Thank you for this show! 🎼🎶

I just found your channel a couple of days ago. You talk about all the great music I grew up with! Possible suggestion for a topic - what about all the hit songs put out by the English music producer Joe Meek? As I recall, he was known for having a natural knack for producing despite his inability to play any instrument or read music notation. The songs he produced were unique in that he knew how to use his recording desk, slightly overdriving the preamp just below the distortion threshold - listen to "Telstar" by The Tornados. There was even a recording preamp marketed to the home recordists called the "Joemeek" that had Joe's sound kind of pre-programmed into it. Anyway, it might make an interesting topic - you can probably dig up far more than I remember about him. Thanks for your channel! I'm subscribed!
