RSR Family, you'll love his, "Who Do You Love", "I Drink Alone" and "Move It On Over" . Great guitar player!! Saw him in concert 11/20/82. Great show! Amber, their song "Kids From Philly" is mostly a sax solo. edit - Thanks to John Lee Hooker (blues artist) for the original House Rent Boogie/One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer. George added a lot of words and instrumentation to both. It's the two songs merged together!!

Got to disagree. I love the live versions (and have seen him play it several times, both in arenas and in clubs). But for this tune, the studio version is the best, IMO. First, there is the groove. The groove never stops. Its filthy. And the tone on that guitar! The live versions have showmanship and are fun. But the groove and the tone make this version really special.

Amber was right about how this song plays live. Every live version will be a bit different as George does a lot of improvisation, modifying the lyrics to suit the venue. It really shows the musicianship and expertise of the group. A friend told me this was the best live act he’d ever seen.

I love this song. It’s actually two different songs combined. House Rent Blues and Bourbon, Scotch and Beer. George definitely put his own flair on it. And yes, it is great live. He throws a couple extra lyrics in. Other Thorogood songs to hear: I Drink Alone, The Sky Is Crying (Elmore Leonard cover), Gear Jammer, Get A Haircut, Talk Too Much, Move It On Over(Hank Williams cover), Who Do You Love (Bo Diddley cover), Willie And The Hand Jive (Willie Dixon cover) Born To Be Bad.

I saw George at a little theater in Albany NY in the 1980’s. Let me tell you hearing him live was amazing! The minute he hit the first note the whole place was on their feet and in the isles going nuts. I’m 64 years old and I’ve seen a lot of concerts and I wasn’t expecting this one to end up being the best time I’ve ever had. The place was so rocking he played way over to the point the theater started flashing the lights to get him to stop. P.S. You guys are great!

This was a combination of two classic John Lee Hooker songs, "The House Rent Blues" and (of course), "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer." Lonesome George was always paying homage to the classic bluesmen. Payin' his dues. Other George Thorogood songs you should listen to: Who Do You Love?, Move It On Over, I Drink Alone, Gear Jammer, Get A Haircut (and Get a Real Job), and You Talk Too Much.

I saw him once in the 80s. The concert was incredible. The trip to the concert, not so much. So I had the two tickets for the concert and convinced my roommate to go with me. We had to take the bus. No problem, I had been to college where he was playing. It was three hour bus ride. Got to the college and something wasn't right. We were at the wrong college. My friend was kind of pissed. But we got back on the bus to go to the other place. That bus dropped us at a mall. It was getting late on a Sunday and the mall was closed. Just the two us at the bus stop in a empty mall parking lot. The next bus was late and we weren't sure if it was coming at all. It finally did and we got to the college and the concert. We missed the opening act but no big deal. Enjoyed the show. So it all turned out okay.

This song was written by Rudy Toombs and recorded by Amos Milborn in 1953 and titled "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer." It was a hit on the R&B stations and was eventually rerecorded by John Lee Hooker in 1966. Hooker changed the title to what we know today and altered the lyrics and melody to closer resemble those Thorogood sings. Hooker's version also gives the song a definite rock and roll flavor as opposed to its original intended blues. No mention is made of the land lady from Hooker, though.

I love Thorogood. He does play quite a few covers, and this is actually two covers in one. "House Rent Boogie" was a John Lee Hooker tune, and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer" was written by Rudy Tooms and originally recorded by Amos Milburn (1953) before being adapted by John Lee Hooker (1966) into essentially the song that George performs here. Another great song of Thorogood's -- not a hit, but so much fun -- is "You Talk Too Much." His hits include "I Drink Alone," great covers of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love?," and Hank Williams' "Move It on Over."

A great concert I went to was George Thorogood as the opener, the main act was BB King. Truly unforgettable.

Amber is right when she said hearing this song live in concert is something else, in 82 I saw J. Geilis, George Thorogood open for Rolling Stones at the L.A. Coliseum.

Great reaction as always! It's fun to watch you two travel through the musical experiences for the first time, the way we all did when these songs came out. Love your reactions! As some others have said, I would suggest "I drink alone". To me, an 80's metal head, that was the first George Thorogood song that caught my attention and drew me into his music.

Became my anthem. That's how I started my nights at the watering hole. Every time without fail. Great way to start the evening, and whatever time during the day. Thank God I don't go to the watering hole anymore.

I was lucky enough to see him back around 85'. It was a school night. I somehow made it to school the next day. I missed most of the classes while sleeping in the gym locker room.😅😅

First heard George in 1981 when he opened for the Rolling Stones (Start Me Up Tour). George played killer guitar and was outstanding. My suggestion to listen to next is his "Who Do You Love".

The whole first album is great and worth a listen. It sounds like they recorded the album LIVE in the studio. We have to give credit to the Bass player and the Drummer, keeping it tight.

That LP was recorded without a bass player… just lead and rhythm guitars and the drum. Bass was dubbed in later. They’ve recently reissued a version without the bass so you can hear what it sounded like; I prefer the one with the bass, but it’s a fun alternative version.

I had George Thorogood as first pick in my walkman to power walk to in the 1990's. Still have the walkman and tapes and recently showed my grandgirls (ancient in their world) my 33's, 45's and cassette tapes. They even considered my car CD player as old-time and shared video/audio with their friends of grandma's relics.
