Robert Cray definitely helped keep the flame of the blues burning in the '80s. Also, Chicago's own Alligator Records, the best blues label around (and still going strong with new artists in 2023), put out a *huge amount* of amazing blues albums in the '80s. Check out the band, The Kinsey Report, and their first album from '87, "Edge of the City."

Saw George Nov 1982, he covered a bunch of Blues artists songs(Elmore James, John Lee Hooker etc). I was fortunate to see many blues artists in the 80s and 90s. I saw Son Seals in 1986, Robert Cray and Little Charlie & the Nightcats in 1988, John Lee Hooker and Buddy Guy in 1989, Albert Collins in 1991 for example.

“One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer” is one of his most entertaining songs. I think you two have such a large following because 1) you obviously enjoy music, 2) you pause as necessary, not constantly, and 3) you give entertaining, often enlightened insights. Too many reactors are not only in love with the pause button but repeat and explain each set of lyrics back to us like we’re idiots: “He said he drinks alone. In other words, he doesn’t need other people around to drink. Some people like to be alone when they drink.” It’s okay to state the obvious some of the time in a spontaneous reaction, but some folks can do nothing else. I love how you hit the perfect balance with enjoyable but intelligent comments, never talking down to your audience. You talk to us as if we’re old friends. Hope you do this for a long time.

Great song. The interesting thing is, the line at the end of the song which was "the only one who'll hang out with me is my dear old grand dad." Many thought George was talking about his actual grand dad. Unaware that 'My Dear Old Grand Dad' is the name of a liquor. Great stuff.

Jay & Amber, you'll love his, "Who Do You Love" and "Move It On Over" !!!!. Great guitar player!! Saw him in concert 11/20/82. Great show! Amber, their song "Kids From Philly" is mostly a sax solo. edit- Hank "Hurricane" Carter on saxophone. Old Grand-Dad bourbon stopped using that name after 2015, became "The Olds". So that's the grand dad he was talking about!

I just discovered this song maybe 6 or 7 years ago. If I drank, this would be my song. Whatever I do nowadays, I prefer to be alone. George Thorogood never had a hit single in the USA, but these songs are very popular on classic rock stations. I'm sure they were on the rock charts.

Willie and the hand jive was his only billboard hot 100 hit, but his albums would go gold almost all the time. He just didn’t have radio friendly music at the time coming out during the disco era! Greatest story of George and the destroyers: During the late 1970s, Thorogood and his band were based in Boston. He was friends with Jimmy Thackery of the Washington, D.C.-based blues band, The Nighthawks. While touring in the 1970s, the Destroyers and the Nighthawks were playing shows in Georgetown at venues across the street from each other. The Destroyers were engaged at the Cellar Door and the Nighthawks at Desperados. At midnight, while both bands played Elmore James's "Madison Blues" in the same key, Thorogood and Thackery left their clubs, met in the middle of M Street, exchanged guitar cords and went on to play with the opposite band in the other club.

I also remember when he did the 50/50 Tour. He played a show in all 50 states in 50 days travelling in a Checker Cab(except when he played in Hawaii). He opened for the Stones around that time and the Stones secretly rehearsed with him because they briefly considered replacing Ron Wood whom they were having trouble with.@@truckrboat

When I was in high school there was one friend we would always hang out and drink in his basement. After one very hydrated evening, there were 4 or 5 of us that stayed over sleeping in chairs, on the couch, or on the floor. In the morning, his mother came downstairs and woke us up after noticing a large number of empties that we had not yet cleaned up. Now, none of us were hung over because we were all still drunk. We all acted like we were still asleep except for Murph. He couldn't because his mom was grilling him. It took everything I had to not bust out laughing when she was wanting names of everyone that was there the previous night and he just rolled his head toward her and said with a straight face, half closed eyes and slurred words, "I drink alone". And he even sung it like in the song. 😂

I lived in Delaware all my life and when I was 18 in 1982,my friend and I met George Thorogood when he pulled up in his modified Taxi at a red light. We followed him back to his recording studio and hung out. He is a really nice guy.

The lyrics to this song crack me up! Some good Roadhouse Blues! Home Free has a batch of songs you really need to do! Brothers in Arms, Playing With Fire, Listen to the Music, Sea Shanty Medley, All About That Bass, the Butts Remix, and then there is Rob Lundquist and Austin Brown singing Nessun Dorma (!!!) and Austin Brown singing Bring Him Him Home from Les Misérables! I was in tears at the end of that one! That last one goes straight to the heart! So does Brothers in Arms. The others range from good fun to outright hilarious!

A friend of mine is a huge George Thorogood and The Destroyers fan and he follows them around doing several concerts in a row. He told me he has hung out with the band at bars after shows and George really does drink alone. He said the band and him and his wife will be hanging out and George will sit by himself having drinks. I also saw ZZ Top with George Thorogood opening a couple of times. Great pairing for sure!

I grew up north of Philadelphia and George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers obviously started out in Delaware and often sang in Philly bars. I saw him live when I was 21 y.o. in a small bar in Philly that held 75 people at the most. Good stuff.
