The reason why buddha's story was so inspiring to so many people was because of the very reason that he was rich and then decided to abandon all his earthly desires. The fact that he was rich made the idea that he just gave literly everything up cold turkey so much better. while this song is a great message i just dont think it takes into account all the facts that makes these stories so inspiring.

I think Buddha is great in this song just because him giving up his riches made his sacrifice of note. He beggar giving up all he owns wouldn't be considered as impressive as a king doing it. Hence being considered enlightened requires a rich and good life that you can give up. The poor man never has anything of value to give up even if he wanted to
