The instinct of Americans to look either for something to purchase or something to smoke (both materialistic) to cure their depression and anxiety, when what they need is for someone to show them true love and affection. The use of different symbols of currency and the @ sign (obsession with social media) is genius, also showing what Americans are obsessed with.

The song describes the modern society and its relationship with consumerism, social media, and the constant need for instant gratification. The lyrics use satire and irony to criticize the superficiality of contemporary culture and highlight the emptiness that can result from it. The first verse describes the narrator ordering a pumpkin spice frappuccino and scrolling through pictures of people they don't like on social media. They feel at war with every species and seek comfort through high-fives and free Wi-Fi. The chorus repeats the phrase "At war with ratios and averages, government establishments, coloring and additives, savages," which implies that modern society is in conflict with the very systems and institutions that sustain it. The second verse finds the narrator searching for something to buy to make them feel better and asking someone to sell them something. They are numb and feel nothing from the junk their heart is pumping. The lyrics suggest that consumerism and material possessions cannot fulfill the deeper needs of human beings. The bridge of the song states, "I don't understand, we were holding hands and stretching in our yoga pants, recycling our soda cans, voting, giving hope a chance." The narrator seems to be expressing confusion and disappointment that the positive actions of individuals can be overwhelmed by the negative influences of society as a whole. Overall, "Savages" is a critique of contemporary culture and consumerism, pointing out the contradictions and superficiality that can result from a focus on material possessions and instant gratification.
