I build boats too. Much, much smaller boats. Cedar strip canoes. I can't imagine where you find the patience and good humour to explain what you are doing as you are doing it. I also don't think most people appreciate how many times in a day the opportunity to mess things up presents itself. The amount of pre-planning of tasks you must do boggles my mind. Which raises the question - where is your thinking chair? You must have one.

A note to those of us with the privilege of following Ross on this epic journey, we need to spread the word! 20k subscribers? Ross, you should legit consider teaching boat building when you finally decide that building for customers is no longer something you want to do. It's always a pleasure to watch you work and to learn. And learning I am; when you put in the radius on that shelf, I wondered whether you'd tab it in later. And, yep, you certainly did.

@@LifeOnTheHulls I can't see me taking on a boat from the mould up, but with all the stuff you've put out, I'd certainly not balk at buying a small, abused boat and giving her some TLC based on what I've picked up here. Most, if not all, of what you've done translates really well to maintenance.

Good on ya cobber in the Australian vernacular. I am really pleased to see that you are keeping to your very high standards rather than succumb to the temptation to just get it finished as the end comes into view. I know you have maybe a year or 18 months to go and it has been a great channel deserving of much more than than the 20k subs you have. I hope when you have this one completed you continue perhaps your son or Johnny would like to knock one out. Alternately there is a channel called Sailing Dauntless they just completed fixing a Lagoon and dove right into a 2021 Leopard 50 which had sunk a bit . I thought of you since a lot of the work such as hull and gel coat is up your alley and they got it for only $50,000. Of course they have to put in a lot of work and parts. Perhaps a project like that would interest you.

Rossco I don't know if you have realised this yet but once you have completed this epic journey your on with the boat, Janet has already got your next job inmind and mate I'm afraid to say it's nothing to do with boat's whatsoever infact your new profession will be a Baker. Yes you read it correctly a Baker at simply because the amount of gluing and layering let alone all the tabing is infact setting you up for a new life icing cake's 🎂 🥮 soon as you make your first there's no turning back. The layering and gluing etc will probably make you a pro straight away!!! Let alone the fact that you have the skillset to make awesome cakes because of how the attention to detail has been key in every single step you have taken with your boat build!!!. Sorry about the heads up on the future job prospects but as always brother 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.. P.s. Might be an idea to get practice putting icing on cakes 🎂 🤔 😋

I wonder if you thought about collision protection regarding the hull laminate. If I'd build a grp boat, I'd include some Kevlar at least in the bow and I'd protect the rudders with an hull attachment in front of the rudders. In my eyes important points which are often criticized by many. This way also beaching the boat would be possible.

Given how you feel about tabbing smallest to largest, I would assume you feel the same for filling in a hole in the hull, e.g. fill in a transducer etc? I have done it both ways and I feel going smallest to largest makes the most sense because I am filling in the depth but also increasing new hold each time. If I go largest to smallest as some text says it seems to be 100% dependent on the single large base layer for all the adhesion to the existing hull. Or am I missing something?
@LifeOnTheHulls
@LifeOnTheHulls 3 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you.If your initial layer fails,through bad prep,bad chemistry,contamination of substrate you are in strife.At least with an increasing spread there is substantial hold.Not rocket science.Thanks for commenting.Ross

Per US Navy repair regs, start small, 1" larger than repair, then larger, and larger, with at least 1" over lay, So you are right about your method Mark. every new layer is bonded to the existing substrate, and to each other.

I don't use PVA other than on fresh moulds The peel ply is great even in unseen areas and has the added benefits of a pre keyed surface for additional work Also provides a smooth surface in areas where you may stick your unsuspecting hand in and rip it apart on a loose piece of unconsolidated glass.I always peel ply everything Save time and money in the long run.Rossco
