I still have the CE-2 my Mom bought for me in 1985 from Thoroughbred Music in Tampa, FL. It was my only chorus pedal until around 2013. The thing I notice about the CE-2 is that it gives me a bit of a volume boost when it is engaged. But it has always been the best chorus sound I have ever had!

@cobowe Good news! BOSS have released the RE-2 and RE-202 pedals, which are a dead-on sonic re-creation of the old Roland RE-201 Space Echo tape unit. Stack a CE-2W switched to CE-1 chorus mode in front of an RE-2 or RE-202 and Bob's your uncle. Another option with this setup is to parallel blend the chorus and delay with a BOSS LS-2 line selector pedal in A+B mix mode. Total cost: between $480 and $760, depending on which pedals you go with. Still far less than the minimum $1,795 that Reverb sellers are currently asking for functioning RE-301's.

+Bruce Johnson Hahahah! Dan and I were having a discussion that relates to this just today. It's to do with the difference of being excited and inspired by something, and trying to demonstrate something that you're not really interested in. We're going to become increasingly disinterested in stuff that doesn't interest us, because neither of us have enough hours left in our lives to devote to stuff that does. (How's that for a sentence?) So yeah, that Totally Impractical Pedalboard challenge is currently riding much higher on the list than 'WTF didn't you include the //insert random chorus pedal here// video. Hooray for being inspired. Yawn to making pragmatic choices.

However, the Publison DHM 89 b2 is the rack unit used on Time After Time, and all over the She’s So Unusual record. The engineer did an interview online about it. It’s an amazing unit, and utilizes more of the delay type chorus.

If you can find a Roland Guitar System GS6 rack unit it contains four different Chorus models including the original CE1, CE2, Chorus Ensemble, and later Roland Jazz Chorus amp models. The GS6 has fully adjustable delay times, depth, speed, panning stereo options and stereo placement options. It can be thought of as Jazz Chorus Amp in rack form. The delay time and reverb section can achieve flanging, through-zero flanging, Leslie Rotary, and Uni-Vibe type sounds. The delay section has panning, e.q. control, types of delay including tape style, and the reverb section is fantastic, including the Spring Reverb model. The effects can be route in various configurations. It's a recommended secondhand purchase for Roland Chorus fans. It also has rotary controls and 64 memory slots. The preamp models are pretty good too.

This episode will be my happy place for a good while. The Boss CE2 was my gateway into playing guitar simply because my early 80s budget strat knock off had appalling tuning issues and using chorus made the sound much more palatable. Lovely to hear the JC120 in action as well and even today, nothing really comes close to that epic chorus width that the twin speaker setup imparts. Excellent stuff as always chaps.

+Simon Godfrey LOVE that approach to chorus. Superb!

Had to pick one up although i have a JC77. Sky King is my main amp, and to do it with two amps for the one effect....i end up having to use 3 mics, and a switcher for one effect. This just lets me pop it on the board, it's in mono and gives me the sound. Or just split it and use two mics... one for tone king and one for JC77 on normal. In studio though sometimes i favor the amp to record. But playing live or jamming with friends, lugging two amps with more mic channels not ideal. The ce2w just does the thing well, and does more....but pricey to me. Almost made me say screw it, grab a space echo instead!

I got my CE-2 after seeing David Lindley and El Rayo-X in the early '80's. He had his set with the Rate at 10:30 and Depth at 2:00 give or take a few minutes. That's where I almost always put it and it's a great rhythm guitar tone. If I were to go out and buy a new chorus the Waza would be my first one to try, but the Free the Tone would be an option if it were in my budget. Keep up the good work guys!

Hi Guys - another great show. When I researched for a substitute for my beloved CE1, I found the Retro Sonic CE-1. To me it is "exactly" the same as the old Boss CE1, but without the noise, and running on 9 volt, standard. The guy who made it also supplied a "how to" remove one resistance, depending on if I wanted the original high-cut from the old Boss or a more neutral sound from the Retro Sonic. I haven't heard the new, more grey colored version he is building now, but the first original, came really close, and sounded better than the new Boss products to my worn out ears :-) Ok, is doesn't have the input gain issue, some love ... :-) Another small comment - to my ears, it sound like the Waza has slightly longer delay, than the CE2 ... seems (at least in this video) that the chorused signal is a little longer away from the original signal on the Waza. So the dobbling effect gets a little stronger from the Waza and therefor slightly more crispy?!?! Haven't heard them any of the two in real world - just an impression from you excellent work. All the very best - Soren BTW - Very nice to say hello to you when you visited Copenhagen - cheers S

I have to confess;I really do love chorus,or rather,anything that simulates a Leslie.In the '60(yes,I'm old)it was a Guild RotoVerb.I went through 3,since they were the original gooped-up pedal & could not be repaired.The mid'70s saw a Maestro Phase shifter;3 speeds with ramp up & down.The early '80s saw a souped-up Strat(Lawrence Blades & an Alembic Stratoblaster)with,yes,a Boss CE-1through an EP-3.My Adrian Belew period.Still have the CE-1.Then a soul band,so a Boss CE-3,for it's size.When it finally developed a bit of tone suck,I went to a TC Corona. But now,I've transitioned to a Leslie simulator,a DLS RotoSIM.It produces a very reasonable Leslie,& is tweakable. Maybe a Leslie simulator comparison?

I used to have the CE2 and loved it, but sold it. I watched this video when it came out and loved the Waza and finally got one this week. I love it and I hear what you are saying about the CE1 with the overdrive thing, but you can get that with other pedals,boosts in to the chorus to acheive that. And Boss pedals are indestructible, I still have a SD1 33 years old.

I have played every pedal featured here except for Tone City and an original CE-1. The CE-2w is currently on my board. Analogman an amazing pedal, but I wanted a very specific tone. The Boss is THE pedal for the 80's chorus sounds. Running a low gain OD in front of the CE-1 setting nails that sound. I'm surprised the Small Clone wasn't covered more, it is a classic analog circuit that is inexpensive and sounds great.

Hi Mick, Dan-- I realize you get a lot of compliments on the show, but have to tell you it really clicked for me recently. Pedals are the great equalizer between the guitars/amps you have and the tone you seek. No pedal is better/worse than the other; some simply deliver the tone desired given a certain set of equipment. Your show has been illustrative to say the least. I believe it antiquates the standard "pedal-demo" genre of videos to a great measure. Thanks for all the insights.
@ThatPedalShow8 жыл бұрын
+northof50now Thank you for that. That is exactly the point! Demos are good as part of anybody's research, and hopefully TPS is another valuable part of it. We can never be the whole story though, and of course we are all still learning. It's a fun journey!

Hey guys, there were some sentences in this show, that made me think - Like the occasional "I got that on my board", "The Chorus that I use" and of course "Not because I'm an idiot, it's because I'm usually singing" - So what we all NEED to know is how your everyday rigs and gigging situations are, which Amps and Pedals do you take to what kind of gigs (...style of music, kind of band, size of venue, temper of promoter...). But maybe this post is redundant because it is all coming along in the "Guitars & Gear"-Videos. Anyway, what a great way to start a lazy sunday with two or three mugs of coffee and listening to you guys tinkering away with some lovely wobbly sounds. Thanks so much and Cheers!
@ThatPedalShow8 жыл бұрын
+Thomas Lange Cheers Thomas. Dan has a run of gigs coming up with his band Tin Spirits so maybe there's a show there. Both of our boards change almost daily - to the point where I don't really have one at all - so doing a show would be instantly out of date. If we have projects on the go, maybe we could focus on the stuff chosen, that might work. I tend to do last minute fill-ins and the odd mates reunion for fun; parties, open mics maybe, but aside from that I lost a lot of love for playing live in bands regularly a few years ago. Haven't really put it back together since! Cheers.
