Uh-Oh, It's The Inevitable Boss MT-2 Metal Zone Episode, Part One.
Daniel and Mick have never heard a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone before - true story. Yet The Interwebs is full of them however, so we thought we'd plug one in and see what we could learn. Nope, neither of us are metallers, hence what happens next... Lots of chugging, then Mick even plays some blues through it.
If nothing else, it's a pretty reasonable demo of the Metal Zone's undoubtable charms!
We also compare the Metal Zone with a JHS @ (AT) pedal for a bit of context, before deciding that, yes, Dan's going to mod the MT-2 for the upcoming Heavy Gain episode.
Thanks to Andertons Music Co for the loan - and sale! - of the Metal Zone.
Other pedals that feature briefly at the end include a Strymon Time Line and a Neunaber Immerse.
Mick is playing a Gibson Derek Trucks Signature SG and a Fender American Vintage ’62 Stratocaster.
Dan is playing a Gibson Custom 1958 Les Paul Standard.
The main amp today is the Mallard 18-watt Marshall clone through a Marshall 2061cx 2x12 cabinet.
As always, all pedal and amp switching and routing is handled by TheGigRig G2.

People act like the Metal Zone is the worst pedal ever made. It is not by far. Is it great? No, but is it useable? Yes, in a very specific context. I personally don't think it sounds any better or worse than a DS-1 in a band setting and that pedal is on countless records. Is it a Rat, a Wampler or JHS? Hell no! But it's cheap and built like a tank. I had one in my bedroom when I was 14 and loved it. Then I grew up and realized it wasn't useable live. Not everything is made for blues or is suppose to be the most versatile pedal on the planet. Compared to the $219 AT, the $89 Boss wasn't that bad. Wasn't great, but wasn't as awful as people make them out to be. Plus, you can get them used for $50 all day. The fizzy top is a trademark of shitty metal tone to me anyway. Dimebag's tone had a fizzy top, but damn that dude was a beast and no one bitches about his tone.
@jsalmons84
@jsalmons84 8 жыл бұрын
+Puertecitos68 where as the Rat's useable gain range is the whole spectrum. The filter control is super useable as well. Then there is enough output on tap to boost any amp into overdrive. The Metal Zone can sound good if you dial it in right, but it's gain range is useless. Most of the EQ controls are crap as well. You gotta really dial them in. The Rat on the other hand sounds pretty damn good no matter how you set it. However, tone is subjective and this is just my opinion from my experiences. On stage and in the studio, the Rat is a killer pedal. It cuts through the mix. It's been used on countless pro boards for 3 decades. The MT-2 just doesn't compare for me. I owned both.

Hi! I think the boss mt2 is a great pedal,for classic metal distortion,this is everything about personal taste, but I may disagree when you say it is not usable live and I will give you 2 examples,these band members I know them: watch?v=AwpenEf9RMQ - here the lead guitarrist is playing with the boss metal zone and the singer/rythm guitarrist is playng with the distortion set on a boss ME-70 or something,both guitars plugged into marshalls valvestate 100 watch?v=gf2CSUxqEP0 - here both guitarrists are using the metal zone... So do you think these bands sound bad live or have a bad tone? Cheers
@thisdyingsoul76
@thisdyingsoul76 8 жыл бұрын
People that bitch about Dimebag's tone don't understand what he set out to achieve. Pantera as of us remember them were going for a sound that was about making it sound like their gear was about to explode... It wasn't meant to sound pretty, because the music itself was not meant to sound pretty. It was meant to be like witnessing a bad car accident or train wreck... You didn't necessarily want to watch, but just couldn't help it.

I'm quite pleased by the fact that you guys immediately spotted the "cocked wah" inherent tone of the MT-2. Most people think it's scooped, which isn't. I've had the pedal in my professional rig for more than 10 years now and if you know how to dial it in right, you can get unique stuff out of it. Cheers guys.

+thedddemon In high school when I was trying out a bunch of guitars at my local music store, one of the guys who worked there had a metal zone plugged into an Egnater Tweaker 40 on the verge of break up and whatever way the pedal was set he managed to get an awesome metal rhythm tone out of it. Probably because the tweaker just takes pedal like a dream but it was a nice chunky riff tone none the less

EXACTLY! People push the gain too hard. Anything past 9 o'clock is... a swarm of awful. But I adore its honk, its mid hump. It's an odd pedal, the mids seem boosted AND scooped, I don't understand exactly - but this pedal has for years been a wonderful creative partner - alongside some true respected classics of metal. The MT-2 is a staple in my recording set-up. But one must use one's ears, and live my the adage 'less is more'. Stay heavy, dddemon!

Actually, if I'm honest, I think the Metal Zone sounds pretty great here in a couple of cases. The EQ seems very powerful, so it seems kind of lazy to say it sounds bad. If you don't like how it sounds, just play with the EQ a little. The clipping is very hard, so its utility is of course going to be limited to metal and hard rock, but I don't think anyone else is going to be interested in it anyway. It seems kind of like a fuzz to me in the sense that it doesn't really sound "good" in the classic sense (like a pushed Fender or cranked Marshall sounds good), but it's just a cool, trashy sound. There's room for that kind of sound, imo.

The guitarist in my pop rock band Brink Theory uses a Metal zone and refuses to get rid of it as it is used in conjunction with 2 other drive/distortion pedals to create his signature sound. I like how he uses it and think some people dismiss it as just a metal pedal but if you tweak it it can be very versatile.

I have a Boss Metal Zone. Technically, it’s vintage now (made in 1995, lol). I’ve never been able to shake it. It’s still on my board. Why? Because it is incredibly versatile if you take the time to figure out the EQ. Now, it’s going to do classic warm tube overdrive; there’s just too much gain. However, you can use it as a heavy overdrive. It can easily cover DS-1 ground; you can get some of the HM-2 sounds out if it, from the Swedish metal tones to the tones Gilmour used the HM-2 for on “Delicate Sound of Thunder”. It just takes time, and tailoring it to fit your rig (whatever guitar you have, any other pedals, your amp, etc...). I can’t get classic fuzz tones from it, but you can get it into Muff territory (you can get RAT tones out of it, and one time I swear I got close to replicating Cornish P2 tones). Again, it’s a better, more versatile pedal than most think, it’s just figuring out what each of the dials do. I think people bought this thing, dimed all the knobs (like people do on the HM-2) and it sounded harsh and terrible, earning it that dubious reputation. That might be the biggest downside of the MT-2: it’s not the most user friendly.

I used to own the Metal Zone and the only real issue was there were so many setting possibilities that you could find some horrid tones if you weren't careful, but you could fine tune it enough and find some good metal tones for everything from metal to hardcore, to death. Too much to mess with though, if you want to just plug in and go.
@ithemba
@ithemba 4 жыл бұрын
I genuinely think the fact that so many bloody amateur guitar players had this as their first pedal ever and turned the knobs without an educated ear and the metal zone being so so easy to mess up the EQ, its the only real reason for the bad reputation this pedal gets. I mean, you can easily make any sound shit with an 8 band eq pedal as well, but nobody would ever suggest that a 8 band eq pedal sounded like shit, just because you pushed the phone-speaker frequency band far too much.

+Bob Oliver I'd say it depends heavily on the style of metal. With some careful tweaking of the tone controls it's at least useable for thrash or 80s inspired stuff... possibly black metal as well. And it offers a surprisingly wide range of variation in the EQ and gain controls. But my personal taste in metal tones falls more on the fuzzy doom/sludge side of things which this pedal is worthless for.

Honestly guys, if you read this, hear me out. Next time you do part two if you an get hold of an unmodded version, do so, and put it in front of a midrangey (Marshall/Suhr, something with punch) amp that is breaking up a little bit. Not quite rythm breakup, but not like grungy clean either. just a bit of dirt. Turn the distortion control down to under 1/4th and fiddle about with the EQ. I guarentee it'll sound better. Maybe not great. But I personally put mine in front of a marshall valvestate 8080, the hyrbid solid state poweramp with a single tube preamp, and set the pedal that way. I wouldn't play Wembly with it, but it sounds fine for home/small gigs mucking around playing metal and super heavy rock. By using a midrangey amp you can dial in the bottom end and turn down the treble without losing any punch. Also as a result of turning down the distortion and letting it meld with the amp, it gets rid of a lot of that hiss and fizz. Just give it a shot, if you can be bothered, I'd like to see how it turns out for yas.

The MT-2 does what it does fairly well as long as you work within it's tonal range and you don't expect it to do low gain OD. I picked one up cheap in a pawn shop a few years ago for the occasional instances when I need that chugging metal sound for recording. I find it does best with a guitar loaded with high gain humbuckers and a solid state front end. I run it into an ADA MP-1 on a solid state clean setting into a Hughes and Ketner Red Box speaker emulator (active version) and it can do some great high gain sounds. It's a one trick pony, but the one trick is pretty good!

rule #1 with the mt2, never turn the gain past noon. rule number two, never turn the gain past NOON. rule number three, see rule one and two. rule number four, the lower the gain the better, try 20 to 40%. adjust eq to you likeing, if into metal speed pick the e string while adjusting the mid frequency but the mid must be boosted or cut while doing so.

This was my very first effect pedal when I started playing guitar at 11 - 12 years old about 15 years ago.. I personally don't care for the "hate bandwagon" this pedal has become infamous for.. I think, just like any other effect, it is as good as the imagination and creativity of the player using it=)... I'm sure a nice lead tone can be dialed-in due to the extensive tone/eq controls

Metal Zone is a fine pedal for what it does. These dudes nailed it. They didn't let everything they heard about the thing ruin the fun of playing it and they admitted it worked for certain sounds. I did the Monte Allums Sustania mod on mine and its pretty good. It kinda needs a high headroom clean amp to do its's thing though. it'll compress a slightly clipping amp really hard and that's why it sounds so sterile sometimes.

The Angry Charlie has that slight bandwidth tightening like cranking a tube amp and having the OT saturate. The grain it has just sounds more organic. See if you guys can get your hands on old Boss Heavy Metal and Hyper Metal pedals. Maybe even the old DOD metal pedals(there's a bunch).
