I agree with that sentiment. But being entirely selfish, I would have rather seen another season of two of them going at it. Doakes was such an amazing anti-hero/villain for Dexter. He had a certain intensity that is lacking with all the other antagonists. It's so hard to find a decent show these days that has more than one season of good material.

That’s because Doakes, in all of his arrogance and self-importance, foolishly believed he had bullied Dexter into submission AND backed him into a corner from which he could not escape. Being a killer himself, Doakes believed he was equal, even superior to Dexter; but his pride and ego was his undoing.

Doakes was the only one with some real cops capacity in that department, the only one with some talent, the only real Dexter ennemy in the entire show, the other ennemy was linked to other things, Doakes was the only one in the entire show close to stop Dexter and it was in season 2, of 8 (originaly) season. We can said Trinity was an ennemy because he kill is wife but Dexter have plenty of occassion to kill him and just choose to not, plus Trinity did not try to kill or arrest dexter. Nan, Doakes was good, other cops are just crap there and it's why Dexter can play with them soooo easily

Dexter is a hero and Doakes is in the wrong. It's why in every depiction both in the comics and films, not so much the netflix series, that the NYPD looks the other way when the Punisher does his thing. He's doing what they wish they could, taking out the trash, permanently.
