This scene is all kinds of bittersweet. Flint made steak rain from the sky. To please his dad. Tim takes the time to observe everything. Tim is the first to notice something is not right with the raining food. Tim and Flint had an argument. Flint reflects back and wonders if he had said the proper thing to his son. He loves Flint so much. Only wants what's best for him. May not understand what goes on, but his knew something was not right with the food rain. Then there was that moment in the tackle shop where he felt like he's losing his son. It's like he's wondering if he had said the proper things to Flint, but may not have worded it properly. It's heartbreaking. The dad's just trying his hardest after the mom passed. Don't give up.

Meanwhile, the people you kicked down and talked trash about that didn’t kill themselves survive, graduate, and start rebuilding their lives and confidence, and eventually (hopefully) succeed. They get good careers because they paid attention in class and learned, instead of riding social clout that nobody’s going to care so deeply about 10 years later. They find spouses and set down roots, leaving *you* to fall behind in a dead-end job and become socially isolated; the exact fate that you were initially inflicting on those you oppressed back in the school halls. This movie always confused me. Flint literally solved world hunger with his device and the only reason it went haywire was the greedy mayor that broke the machine. Really, everyone should have been mad at the mayor for screwing up their cash cow with his greed and Flint should have made a proper failsafe before or during the events leading up to the catastrophe. I know its a kids movie but it feels like the wrong lesson was learned since Flint was gaslit into thinking he and his invention were in the wrong when it really wasn't.

He wasn't gaslit. It WAS his fault because he himself knew that what was happening was going too far and that he should destroy or shut down the machine. He was given three clear warning signs given to him by his father, Sam, and himself when he saw those big ass hotdogs... And he ignored all of them for the sake of appeasing his daddy issues and desire for recognition, so what happened quickly afterwards WAS on him
@chuckingreaper86549 ай бұрын
@@Joker-dn5xsHe WAS taken advantage of by the towns people because he made their lives easy. He wouldn’t have been so easily taken advantage of had THEY not ridiculed and mocked him for years, essentially making him into a social outcast. Let’s not pretend his desire of recognition wasn’t born from nothing. It was built over years of being ostracized by the town and not being taken seriously for his genius. He would’ve stopped sooner had he been told otherwise by the populace. If the towns people weren’t as greedy, things would’ve never spun into mayhem later in the film.
@Joker-dn5xs9 ай бұрын
@@chuckingreaper8654 Don't assume or imply that I'm not aware of why he had such a strong desire for recognition and praise in the first place. I know full well WHY and WHERE he got his desires from, and yes the townspeople also had a hand in what happened to the town I never have and never will deny that... But it's still Flint's fault. As unfortunate as his situation was, understanding and sympathizing does not equal condoning his actions (or lack thereof). Like I said, he was given plenty of warnings signs that he had the ultimate responsibility to heed and act on, but he let his desires cloud his judgement. I get why he did it and I do sympathize with him, really, but that doesn't change the objective truth of the situation. But don't think I'm only putting the blame on Flint because I'm not. I'm only focusing mainly on him because OP was trying to say he wasn't in the wrong when he was, but he wasn't the only one that fucked up. EVERYONE was at fault -- or least almost everyone -- that's the movie itself stated. (Rough quote) "Sure he made the food, but it was made to order, and now it's time for us to pay the bill." They all helped in making the mess and they came together to help clean it up, which I can respect, honestly.

Man, Flint’s Dad is so mean …is what I would of said when I watched this a kid. But now? I’m not so sure. Tim recognized that Flint’s pride was getting a bit much (and that it’s not the only thing that’s a bit much). He knew that Flint wanted him to be proud, but as a father, he knew it was his responsibility to point out the faults. Faults that Flint only began to notice AFTER he’d pointed them out. And as for the “I’ll get out of yur way” attitude, that’s not him being a stubborn, old-fart. That’s him being a father and human. Of course he wants to see his son succeed (and of course he has his preferences of how Flint does so) but he recognizes that despite him being Flint’s father, he cannot control Flint. He has to let his son choose how he does things, and if those things don’t include him or his knowledge of fishing, all he can do is step back and hope for the best (not that he’d hope to shove an “I-told-you-so” in Flint’s face, but rather that Flint either learns the lesson on his own or proves him wrong for worrying.) Of course, Tim wanted to be proud of his son, but by taking a moment to look at Flint’s “success,” he knew that Flint wasn’t out of the woods yet and that celebrating now would be too soon. And after returning to the shop to make more chum, he realizes that maybe he could’ve worded it differently. I’m not a father myself, but as someone who grew up with a Dad similar to Flint’s, (one who was also very introverted, stoic, and didn’t always know what to say or how to say it) and after several heart-to-heart conversations through the years, I understand where Tim is coming from, even if he never says so in the movie and I felt like I needed to explain the scene from the Dad’s perspective.

You know, I feel bad for both Flint and his dad throughout the movie. Flint was basically an outcast who spent time making inventions (that failed) and was relentlessly made fun of for it. Then, when his invention to make food for the town, it failed because of a greedy mayor and the town blamed Flint for it and not the mayor. True, Flint could’ve made some type of fail safe but it was still the mayor’s fault. In terms of Flint’s dad, he’s the kind who has trouble with showing emotion or having a heart to heart. Which explains as to why he uses fishing metaphors to try to get his point across. When he sat at the table, I think he was gonna say that he was proud of him but when he saw the overly big steak, he had a feeling that something was wrong. He’s been a victim of Flint’s experiments that went wrong and probably thought something wrong might happen. Both had gone through a great del of loss when the woman they loved passed. She was the glue that held the family together. I will say this is still a great movie. I do still feel bad for both Flint and his dad though each time I watch it.

Throughout this entire scene, I am definitely on Tim Lockwood's side. The way Flint becomes very excited to tell his dad the news, the way he becomes so happy when he asked his dad whether he is proud of him or not. All of it are nice until Tim asked if the steaks are getting bigger. From there, Flint becomes very disheartened to hear this. It was at this point that Flint got very angry at his dad for constantly trying to get him to work at his boring tackle shop. Tim eventually felt hurt by this and left the roofless restaurant, not wanting to be yelled at like that. What I would say to Flint, "Hey, don't give me this sad look. What he is trying to tell you is the truth and what do you think he is going to do? Lie to you and then let you do all the wrong. No. And have you ever stopped and just look around you for a moment? Ever since you started working for the mayor, you have become increasingly obsessed with fame and fortune and I don't like this one bit about you."

........I was going to comment how nothing about this would have any logistical sense with fancy wine and that meat falling at terminal velocity, and then it actually started to shatter the glasses. Movie answered my own thoughts. I appreciate that.

Flint isn't stupid, just incredibly gullible and naive to peer pressure. I think the reason why he doesn't question the abnormality of the steaks at first, is because everyone seems happy and content which fuels his ego that his invention is a success. With his Ego inflated, he doesn't really listen to his loved ones who are trying to warn him. It's quite sad honestly. Even when he notices these flaws he gives into temptation yet again when the mayor brainwashes him into believe that "bigger is better". Luckily though...Flint makes up for this by shutting do the FLDSMDFR and saving Swallow Falls as well as the world.

I will not said that Flint got an ego but more an insecurity, he spent his whole life being bullied and rejected by everyone and he only wanted to be accepted, he was denying the possibility of his machine would cause troubles because he was afraid of facing an other failure which could ultimately turn all the town against him again. This is illustrated in the next scene with the Mayor, when the mayor manipulated him by warning him that if he turned off the machine, everyone would be dissapointed and would hate him again.
