"That's How Satan Wins" - An Interview with Nergal of Behemoth

The last time I spoke with frontman Nergal from Poland's Behemoth in 2009, he told me that he wasn't very popular in his home country. Unlike many of its neighbours, and despite producing some of the genre's best bands, extreme metal music doesn't seem as popular in Poland. Looking at an old appearance from a Polish chat show, Nergal seems at odds with mainstream culture, no matter how hard they try to understand him.
But since then Nergal's profile at home has exploded. Many have attributed this rush of interest to his relationship with pop-star Doda and his brief involvement with the Polish version of the TV talent-show "The Voice". This seemed a bit absurd to me, as Behemoth's music at its most accessible is undeniably extreme and utterly indigestible to a pop audience.
At the same time it hasn't always been easy. Nergal was twice brought up on charges of insulting the Roman Catholic Church for tearing up a bible on-stage, a crime with a maximum two-year sentence. As well Behemoth was put on hold in 2010 when he was diagnosed with leukemia.
So it was with all this in mind that I sat down with Nergal before his Toronto headlining set on the Metal Alliance tour to talk about his increased profile at home, and the unique circumstances both bad and good that have made Behemoth one of the world's most well-known and consistent extreme acts.

UPDATE 05/26/14: Not long after the release of this interview, the band found themselves in trouble on their "Russian Satanist Tour". They attracted attention from conservative Christian groups with some dates being cancelled. Apparently things did get physical at some stops. Finally in the city of Yekaterinburg, the band was detained for not having the correct visa.
Seven members of band and crew spent a night in a narrow cell with feces smeared on the walls and were forced to urinate in bottles. The next day they were deported back to Poland. In the end, they were only able to play four of the thirteen Russian dates they had scheduled.

I saw Behemoth play once at a tiny bar underneath a laser-tag place in Southern Ontario, Canada. Seeing such a band play in such a small place made for a monstrous live show that I still consider to be the best I've ever seen in any type of venue.

Yeah I would expect him to be pretty tired; this was when he was halfway through his tour and just finished the USA. I saw him and met him briefly a couple days before this interview when they played in NYC. Definitely the best night of my life, the amount of energy they project live is absolutely insane. A building, statue, a world heritage listed site, and original/sole copy or ancient piece of writing, anything like that, fair enough for sure... but one copy of a mass produced book! Yeah I see your point, and yes, they might have another branch in that particular law since the bible is a religious book - more specified a christian book. Therefore it is "holy" and all that kind of BS, so I guess in a country like Poland you would easily be charged with for example blasphemy, if you go on a stage and start ripping a "holy" book of "gods words" too pieces. Again - There's nothing more full satan than that.

Alot of people don't know that Adam Darski is a practitioner of THELEMA, and thelemic magick has it's main roots in the Hebrew Qabbalah, this is very interesting to me, if you do any religions studies it's strange to see how satanism has it's roots in old cannonite religions like Gnostisism is an early form of Christianity, which is really strange because the Gnostics were very into abortion and other strange religions practices. Behemoth studies black magick and all black magick comes from one place and one place alone, magick originated in Babylonian and Mesopotamian folk literature, and when you start to research magick, things get really fucking interesting. Especially when you factor in Crowley and the temple of the golden Dawn and what type of magick they studied and practiced. Nergal is a modern follower of Crowley.

Im agnostic so to me Behemoth is art. Nothing more. And I think the reason I'm now being drawn to it is because I was always scared to listen to any bands that was close to being "evil". Hell I listen to Tool and it's supposedly has to do with the "occult". I like avenged sevenfold even.
