The 85th edition of the Tata Steel Masters is a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 14-29 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen heads a field that includes Ding Liren, Fabiano Caruana and teenage stars Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Vincent Keymer and Praggnanandhaa.
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. A tie for first place will be decided by two blitz (3+2) games. If still tied, the players keep playing single "sudden death" games where White gets 2.5 minutes and Black 3 minutes until one side wins. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. 12:55 I can understand why they left out the first name of Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa. Together with his last name, it is just too long. But why did they do the same with Dommaraju Gukesh? The total number of letters is 15, which is 2 smaller than Parham Maghsoodloo and 5 smaller than Nodirbek Abdusattorov, that are shown in full.
@Trip_Fontaine
@Trip_Fontaine Жыл бұрын
I believe "Rameshbabu" is a patronymic (meaning "son of ..."), not his first name. His first name is "Praggnanandhaa" and people with this style of name are formally addressed by their first name. "Viswanathan Anand" is the same style of name. He is formally addressed as "Anand" even though it's his first name.

Right. In Tamil Nadu, after a big social movement in 1950-60s, surnames were frowned upon because they are mostly caste names. People use Father’s name as Surname. This movement spread some extent to adjacent Kerala too.

How is the time added after move 40? Are the clocks programmed to add it automatically? Do you stop the clock and call the arbiter over to add it? How does it work? Does anyone know?
@christianhumphreys1049
@christianhumphreys1049 Жыл бұрын
I can tell just for club level but it looks like they use the same digital clocks on that level too: There are specific modes in the clock for this which have to be selected or configured by the arbiter before the game. First the time clocks down to zero, then the extra time is added automatically. However there is a sign on the clock that indicates that you have already used up the time of the first period (usually 2h for the first 40 moves). In the old days with analogue clocks an arbiter had to add the time manually for both after time control. Additionally, the nowadays digital clocks counts moves, the amount of moves can always be displayed. However it is recommended not to rely on this as there may be situations in which the clock is pushed more than once per move, eg in the beginning or just accidentally.
