The 2023 Tata Steel Challengers is taking place from 14-29 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. The 14-player single round-robin offers the winner an automatic place in the 2024 Tata Steel Masters.
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. A tie for first place will be decided by two blitz (3+2) games. If still tied, the players keep playing single "sudden death" games where White gets 2.5 minutes and Black 3 minutes until one side wins. Official website: www.tatasteelchess.com

It jumped out to me too but I dismissed it right away. Didn't 'feel right' to me at all. Usually a move like a5 would be played to distract the bishop, but Black didn't have time to capture on f2 in any case and Bxa5 would still protect the same diagonal, so it didn't make sense. Turn out it wasn't distraction, but attraction lol

17:39 seeing that the ultimate point of playing a5 is to set up a rook fork on the two black bishops something like 10 moves later made me spit out my food. Jesus christ that's insane.
@georgeguitar9803
@georgeguitar9803 Жыл бұрын
There was no need to spit out your food. :) The rook fork is just one of a myriad number of ways to win once the pawn move has been made. I just played out a couple of other winning variations after the pawn move. For example at 17:05 King doesn't have to go to d8. Then there are many other ways to win.

Antonio: if you can find the move, you have potential to be rated 2500 or 2600 Me, rated 600: Queen captures on e8 forces the king to capture, then knight g5 with a discovery check with an attack on the queen I forgot that black just captures the knight and you are down a bishop. This is why I am rated 600 😂

@manguito598 Жыл бұрын

My instinct after the bishop defended was a5 and I was surprised he didn't do it. Nxe5 is 2nd best as is the Re8 response. I certainly didn't see the bishop fork at the end... I just thought there would be some kind if tactic with the Queen forking the undefended bishop but that never manifests.

I only play about three games of chess per year, but I got the a5 move. At first I was looking at Bxd6, which leads to some very similar positions with Nf7+ but none that seal the deal because the dark squared bishop is still in the game and doesn't offer the fork and a couple other positional issues. The last two games I played last year were 85-90% accuracy and I've had several people tell me if I actually dedicated some time and found someone to help coach me a little, I could be a 2000+ rating in a matter of a year and a half or two. I just haven't found anyone I enjoy playing with and that to me is a big motivation, along with the fact I hate studying openings and don't play enough to remember them. I am not a fan of blitz or online rapid, at least not yet. I'm only a couple hours from Charlotte though, so I have thought about going there and trying to meet a couple people.
@zemm9003
@zemm9003 Жыл бұрын
You can randomly guess a5 because the bishop is much better placed on b6 strategically. The problem is that the position is tactically very sharp so if it doesn't work in practice then white just loses a clean pawn (at best or the game at worst). You have to calculate that it does indeed work and this means that you have to calculate the "forced line" that Agadmator showed all the way to the end and if you didn't, then you didn't really find the correct move, you only guessed it but didn't understand why it works so well in this particular case.

NATURALLY i assumed the pawn push was just in general an obvious move. what wasnt obvious was that it forced the win. so i calculated all of the knight and bishop sacrifices, they all didnt work. then when i did the pawn push FIRST then calculated all the knight/bishop sacs i found out THEN it works. its crazy how chess is sometimes. it was confusing me hard because i was like dang these bishop/knight sacs are so close. and it was that NATURAL pawn push to bring the bishop up one square that fixed everything

I would also play the pawn, but for another reason. I did not have such a deep thoughts.

The pawn move is good. However, Queen taking Rook on e8 is also very interesting.

I truly found it. But it took me at least 5 minutes to do so. But after the lines you showed. I wouldn’t need to for the 2 bishops. There is a faster way
