My main concern is the direction that city is being taken to, I remember some years ago the buildings being targeted at 8-12 year range, a bit of an older audience, and that opened up a lot more possibilities for details that adults could easily enjoy too, it's what originally made city a great line, not as detailed as creator, but a cheaper alternative. Loved the review, keep up the awesome work.

There must be some very unhappy staff members at LEGO at the moment because every decision made by senior management regarding colour, design and price in this set is indicative of cost cutting, shameless recycling and cynically manipulating a loyal and loving fan base.

First, the stuff here present seems incomplete and generally worse than the previous one, like the police station or the police truck. As you, I'm definitely not the target of this set, but 'as a kid' I'm not impressed and 'as a parent' I'm pissed off reading the pricetag. I read 1500 pcs, and I expect to pay no more than 150€ (which still seems A LOT, for not having trademarks or copyrights to pay). Then, 180€ (here in Italy) is simply a theft.

The high price of this positions this right on the same range as a lot of very seriously impressive alternative sets, collectable or not. It's the same price as Pirates of Barracuda Bay, several Star Wars UCS sets, costs more than several Creator Expert Modular Buildings and is a lot more costly than quite a number of large City sets. My main problem with this is the relative lack of cohesiveness with the set-pieces; it feels like a lot of small separate sets thrown together to become a mega bundle, which puts it outside of the realm of reasonable affordability for kids. If you want City sets, you're honestly better off spending $200 on several smaller City sets which would not only be comparable in volume, maybe greater than this set, but also likely to be a lot cheaper, given that they are much more widely available than this set and are likely to have been discounted by other retailers.

I have this on in the background as I do some colouring-in, and I had to rewind to make sure I actually heard "hearing aid". I'm not deaf myself, but it warmed my heart to see that detail included on a minifigure. Hopefully that head can come back in a future people pack.

This is definitely a downgrade. There isn’t a full building in the set. Every year before game you at least 2 buildings and a couple of vehicles. Last years and the year before was pretty good. But this year is not worth it. And that limo is practically a copy of one from a year or two ago.

I’ve personally been losing interest in the city theme over the last few years (mostly due to an inundation of repetitive vehicle builds), but this set breaks that mold completely! I’d love to see buildings with more depth/detail, but the vehicles feel unique and appropriate for the setting. Thanks as always Jang!

Same! I'm a big fan of the airport/airplane sub-sets and I was excited to learn earlier this year that they were releasing new sets. But I was disappointed when I saw the leaked pics and then when we did the review I was like meh. I MAY get the plane on BrickLink but now pay for the full set.

I wish they brought back some of the older, more "unique" themes. Or maybe have themes cross over, just to spice things up a bit. The old arctic sets for city were cool, but a bit uninspired with their builds. The old mining theme was cool, but that too was done to death, with their repetitive vehicles. We seem to get police (and firefighters, to a lesser extent) ever year. Regarding having themes "cross over," I think it would be cool to see other themes make a cameo in the city theme. Maybe a City + Pirate theme, where you have a Caribbean fort or something, with civilians walking around with uniformed soldiers with muskets. Or maybe City + Ultra Agents, where you have a police set, but everything's just a bit more "high tech" looking. Nothing to stray too far away from the City theme, but you can obviously see the other theme's inspired influences. City + Castle? A medieval village? Or City + Alien conquest? Have a normal city theme, but the action features would show some "paranormal" activity going on, and could be easily hidden if you didn't like the Alien conquest theme. I think having themes "cross over" would have more interesting or inspired builds for LEGO city. Just my opinion.

@@sabremarky15 I too have always loved the airport subtheme, but it's a shame that Lego seems to place a greater emphasis on vehicle-related side builds than fleshing out an airport build beyond merely a façade. In the future I'd love to see a larger and more detailed airport, or a passenger plane with more than 5 seats. I recognize that many City sets are targeted at kids (many of whom like playing with smaller vehicles), but one can dream, no?

Davis I think the idea of incorporating another subtheme into the City line is fantastic. I know it’s not Lego’s usual style, but I think it could reinvigorate people’s interest in the theme. A personal note: I adore the fact that you mentioned Alien Conquest, it was actually one of my favorite themes back in the day. I would love to see them resurrect that theme one day.

Your title sums up my feelings. Not sure what’s happening with City buildings. For the last few years they are starting to look really incomplete. The designs look amazing and modern but as in the recent Octan service station where the building only has 2 proper walls it compares poorly to previous sets. Some of the recent space sets have had lame buildings too eg a hanger without any walls. It’s all about vehicles these days which I understand, but it seems harder for kids to create there own city layout with lack of buildings and dare I say baseplates. Great thorough review 👍

I think it is right to judge something after factoring in its age range, but the price range should also be considered. I definitely expected more out of 200 dollars, especially comparing it to the Creator Town Hall that was 180 dollars. I don't think this backwards step (in my opinion) is worth 20 dollars, just to justify it due to the "show." I think the LEGO sets need to stand for themselves, even *when* tied to existing media. Off the top of my head, the LEGO movies, Ninjago TV show, and LEGO Dimension sets all look good without you even knowing or having seen their respective movies/shows. I can't say the same for this set.

I've never heard of any real location with such a name, and it sounds oddly unnatural, almost as if someone tried to combine "Main Street" and "City Square". Why is this the 'main' square? I got the razor crest set and one of the grey bricks used in the carbon freeze parts already had marks. Also found the three 1x1 black bricks with clips on the side used to hold the spring shooter shots were very hard to press together.

The lego railway tracks have been of the same basic design since the 1990s. The only difference is that 1990-2005 tracks have 9V electric rails and the 2006-present tracks don't have two electric rails of course. The network stickers look like London Transport ones (the company that runs London Underground).

Fair review, context is relevant, and I see the City square sets as starter sets. They really need to improve the sticker quality (the HS school was also badly cut), and consider putting large transparent pieces in separate bags, or else figure out a way to remove the scratches. Lego should rethink their city theme and produce a larger series of small modular sets in the city style, so I can choose what to buy. A lot of people who would have bought some parts of this set will be put off by the price of the whole thing.
