There's a thin line between ugly and tacky. The defendant was just a bit dramatic. Also, part of the fun of ugly sweaters is making them for yourself. We used to go to dollar stores and thrift stores and find all types of sweaters, ornaments, lights, etc. and just have a good time making them. $300 is too much for something you'll probably wear once in the hopes of winning $1,000.

I can understand the steep price. You obviously have never been a small business owner.
