Hammering the whole chord is a John Prine thing for sure - he does this in a lot of songs. Thanks for your tutorials - I started playing guitar after John died and now I can play (poorly) 10 or 11 of his songs. Love your method of teaching. Here’s the correct lyrics: First verse: “I know a guy that’s got a lot to lose / He’s a pretty nice fellow, kinda confused / He’s got muscles in his head that ain’t never been used / Thinks he’s owns half of this town / Starts drinking heavy, gets a big red nose / Beats his old lady with a rubber hose / Then he takes her out to dinner, buys her new clothes / That’s the way that the world goes ‘round. Chorus: That’s the way that the world goes ‘round/ You’re up one day, the next you’re down/ It’s a half an inch of water and you think you’re gonna drown/ That’s the way that the world goes ‘round/ Second verse: I was sitting in the bathtub counting my toes/ When the radiator broke, water all froze/ I was stuck in the ice, without my clothes/ Naked as the eyes of a clown/ I was crying ice cubes, hoping I’d croak/ When the sun come through the window, the ice all broke/ I stood up and laughed, thought it was a joke/ That’s the way that the world goes ‘round Repeat chorus The half an enchilada was a famous misheard lyric and a story he loved to tell in live shows. There’s a few versions of it on KZbin. (These lyrics above are straight from the John Prine songbook, “Beyond Words”) Also, in later years, after his bout with cancer, JP played a lot of his Capo5 songs on Capo 2 - including this one, but also Souvenirs and Hello In There. So totally move that capo if you need!

Mike you are brilliant!! Great teacher. Don’t know if you also teach in a school setting, but you’re a natural. I love John Prine, I’ve been playing guitar for 45 years. Play in a band blah blah blah, but my finger style approach for this kind of material wasn’t where I wanted it to be. Thanks for your knowledge! I’m seeing a new pathway opening up for me. Robert. Thanks, man. What a wonderful comment. I'm 40 and have taught privattley since age 20. But at first my focus was kids between 4-16. So lots of patience and simplifying. I think that's given me a good skill set for this stuff. Also I'm not the quickest tool in the shed, so having to grind it out myself also helps me to reflect on that journey. And man, dive into the content! Join the DIscord and Zoom meetings to ask questions and stay in touch. Love it! You should check out Goin’ Home by Dan Auerbach. Pretty travis picking tune by the Black Keys’ frontman. He was pals with Prine and co-wrote a couple of songs on Prine’s last album.

Those lyrics you’re singing are Miranda Lambert’s PC cover version of the original song. This and John Prine’s “Paradise” are me and my 2 buddies favorite tunes to do when we get together. I hesitate to call us a band because all I do is sing,my hands and especially fingers shake too bad to play anything accurately and all my friends do is one plays acoustic guitar or pedal steel depending on the song and the other does harmony / backing vocals as she can’t play anything either. We still have fun though.
