As people have been asking, my main source was the academic essay collection, "From Nagapattinam to Suvarnadwipa." I highly recommend it for anyone interested in learning about the Chola Empire administration, culture, and the circumstances surrounding their Southeast Asia invasion. Enjoy! @@blackpearl5834 Hey black pink, I mentioned this in another comment -- it's just a cartoon-y look that I went with to make it interesting. The belly on a monarch is meant to symbolize his substantial wealth and power -- and to do so in a fun way. It is not meant to be a 1:1 depiction of Rajendra Chola in reality. I can't change the thumbnail at this stage to make him skinnier, either, as I use the same character model in the video. I appreciate your interest though. I hope you enjoyed the video regardless!

The Chola empire was extra-ordinary. Its a shame CBSE had huge chapters about the Mughals but only two paragraphs about the Cholas. I was fascinated by the Chola kingdom exploits ever since I learnt that countries like Cambodia, Thailand and Indonesia have been influenced by Hinduism and that they follow most of Indian epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata as a part of their heritage. I wondered how the countries so far would know about India... Of course it was the Chola Dynasty who did that.

Indeed, though interestingly it was not just due to Chola influence! The Pallavas, Kalinga, and Bengalis had an enormous influence on SE Asian culture before the Cholas. Interesting stuff!

The Cholas were also master builders, constructing temples that rivaled anything else built during that time; indeed as impressive as Europe's great Gothic cathedrals. If anyone visits India, yeah sure check out the Taj Mahal and all, but head to Tamil country to see some of the best of Hindu architecture India has to offer! Check out India in my realistic maps for Age of Empires 2 including: the world, Eurasia, Pacific Ocean (where in the west I have most of Asia including most of the north of the Indian Ocean plus the Persian Gulf). The other day I played as India using Persians to represent Indians due to the game's limited selection, and I had a lot of trade with Persia but they betrayed me, so I unleashed my war elephants. Later, Cambodia attacked so I had a large army in the east to defend India. When I was consolidating my conquest of Persian lands, I saw China invade Tibet, and knew I would be next, so I entered Tibet and war with China began, and it was epic.

Until today, the waters off the south of Sumatra and Java are still known to be very rough and treacherous even not in the monsoon season. Assassin's Creed's plot is actually to show the kings and rulers as the bad guys or the Templar, while the assassin tries to defeat him in order to get the artifact. So if the game took plac here, the protagonist will be a guy who travels around the city alone trying to eliminate each targets. Assassin's Creed:Origins were somewhat similar to what I say, but it was welcomed, but my only concern is that if the Kings were shown as Templars or the bad guy, there would be a sort of backlash.

I'm a Tamizhan here. You could have just went with just the history of Cholas but you went beyond and gave the actual facts about trade guilds and that's mighty impressive. That's the ultimate driving force of Tamil country until it existed and ruled by Tamizh people. Even the greatest epic Silapathikaram known as the first epic to revolve around commoners than kings will show you lot about rich Tamizh guilds controlling things even during 2nd century. Simply masters of seas and with this unquenchable thirst for rich and unwavering boldness who knows what are all the new lands they would have visited and taken those facts to their graves without leaving for the next gens. It is a commonly accepted idea atleast in Tamil Nadu that they were not only traders but wanderers and explorers of the seas. Countless ancient Tamizh poems been written about wives showcasing their agony and love waiting for months and months for her husband to come back from trade and war journeys.

it’s also the case with every other empire and kingdom in India, they have dedicated a year to all kingdoms like the chola, maurya, pandava, saurashtra and ahom sometimes almost removing the gupta and ahom empire but they have dedicated 2 years to Mughal rule and delhi sultanate and 2 years to Gandhi led freedom movement removing radical fighters like chandrashekhar azad, bhagat singh, subhash chandra bose and etc. We aren’t taught about our real history that may help Indians regain their value in the world but we still study the british manipulated Indian history removing real and powerful empires both by military might and economic strength, we aren’t even taught about how much we contributed in the economic sector of the world and how the hell those island people destroyed our cash flow.

Fun fact Raja Raja cholan holds the record for largest man made lake in history, it stretches for about 16miles... Least known fact.. there's an stone scripture in that lake the lake's name is kavinadu yeari it says that who ever any person from any cast creed religion regardless if the lake ever gets clogged or something were to happen to its supply chain (the lakes were built as an reservoir for the surrounding farmers and people with many outlets) even after his death and 1000 years past whom so ever clears it will have the eternal gratitude of the king where it specifically describes that the King would place the feet of that person on his head and pledge is servitude.... A King who conquered fortitude of nations, whose army instilled fear in hearts of every nation, a vast empire with supply chain with 6 continents, whose naval fleet so vast it made the bay of Bengal look like a lake has described in the great literatures, all in all A King of Kings saying that he will worship the feet of a common man who helps his people by giving them water. Now to the people who read this you may disagree with me for my claims and may not believe me cuz as any human being i can lie but the pages and stones etched in history can't that scripture is still there that lake is still there and the legacy of this great king will live on.

India is so strategically located in the world, connecting Europe, Africa and West Asia to East Asia and Australia. No wonder there were so many attempts to invade and conquer this country. This is a great comment bro. Actually if I think about it personally, I feel its partly because of the capital being shifted to Delhi which is far away from the southern states. Kolkata was a great choice of Capital city situated around the coastal part of central India. Also the impact of Islamophobia throughout India could've been prevented if we had Kolkata instead of Delhi. Or we should've come up with a new idea having four head states of the country, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Madras. All four with evenly distributed governing bodies.. Our country is big and hugely populated, having one governing body located at the top-end makes it concentrate more on the border issue alone, which is very important of course, but leaving the rest of the country weak interms of defence or maritime sovereignty.. Afterall that's Indian ocean we have below us, We could easily have a formidable maritime force, instead we're letting all the neighbouring smaller countries around us join hands with china to bully us.. Money is important but, proper strategy is the most important of all.. Throughout history we've seen smaller countries come out time and again to conquer the world and even succeed for the most part. We too have had successes through history in this regard, but in present we kinda look weak and are blindly following the western world.. Hmm sad... Taking some good habit from other countries is great, but literally following everything.? That's wrong.

The "bay of Bengal " was christened "chOzhamaNdalam" i.e. "chozA zone" which was corrupted and morphed into "coromandal" by the British. This is why the east coast of India is referred to as "Coromandel coast"
@cholan95

Chola Mandalam is the territory on land, not the bay of Bengal or Vangaalam. Part of the Vikrama Chola Mandalam was Bangalore or Bengaluru, which was earlier called as Vengaluru. Choromandal coast could have originated from the Telugu speaking people who pronounced Tamil zla as ra. So the British observed what was available to them.

@Hari haran read clearly what I have written. More over Vijaynagar kingdom ruled Tamil Nadu and it is during their times most Telugus and Brahmins came over to Tamil Nadu. Most of these people who came over pretend to be Tamils and there are multiple waves of migration from Telugu land. Consequently their influence on the culture and tradition they impart. Tamil Nadu and Srilanka were and are being controlled these people till this day. From your Movie actors to every single politician are of these people from Vijayanagr times. Even the political bastards who talk too much about Tamil and its history are all from the same background. The pretend to be Tamil to establish control over the territory. Besides that most Telugus who came over to Tamil regions did not pronounce Tamil very well. Even though Telugu itself is distorted version of Tamil. They had difficulty with zha and pronounced as ra or da.
@cholan95

@Hari haran indo Aryan language originated in india. Tamil having a few sanskrit words does not make it of the origin of sanskrit. Sanakrit was created by the immigrants who came here, who took Tamil literature and translated it to a new language which was somewhere between what they spoke and Tamil. That is the origin of Sanskrit

15:17 Sri Rajahmura Lumaya, known in his shortened name Sri Lumay, was the first Rajah and the founder of the Indianized Rajahnate of Cebu. According to the epic Aginid, Bayok sa atong Tawarik,a Bisayan epic story, Sri Lumay was a half-Tamil and half Malay minor prince of the Chola dynasty in Sumatra. Sri Lumay was the grandfather of Rajah Humabon.He may be called a semi-legendary figure, since no other written records mentions about Sri Lumay, other than in oral traditions in the Visayan epic story of Anginid. According to Visayan folklore, Sri Lumay was a half-Tamil & half-Malay Chola King from somewhere in Sumatra, who settled in the Visayas, and had several sons. One of his sons was Sri Alho, who ruled a land known as Sialo which included the present-day towns of Carcar and Santander in the southern region of Cebu. Sri Ukob ruled a polity known as Nahalin in the north, which included the present-day towns of Consolación, Liloan, Compostela, Danao, Carmen and Bantayan. He died in battle, fighting with the Muslim Moro pirates known as magalos (literally "destroyers of peace") from Mindanao.The islands they were in were collectively known as Pulua Kang Dayang or Kangdaya (literally "[the islands] which belong to Daya").

"Indian history" has a not-so-slight tendency to focus solely on the big players of the north and the west, completely ignoring rest of the country. In the central board's school curriculum, the mauryan empire, gupta empire, delhi sultanate, mughal empire all got entire chapters dedicated to them, discussing the achievements and actions of individual rulers, but the cholas and pallavas got clubbed into one chapter with Harshavardhan, and even in that the latter was the main focus.

Very well presented indeed! I can safely say that even Indian school students today hardly learn about these (and many more) empires and their influence & legacy in shaping the modern world as we know it now. The empire of Ahom (centered around modern day Assam) is another example. Oh and another thing is that when you say these Southern Indian empires/ tribes ‘began’ around 300 BCE, it has to be noted that these are mere assumptions based on extant literature, mostly from foreign (Roman/ Greek) sources. Their true beginnings would be likely much earlier, and surely would make for extremely interesting reading as well.

Cholas and Pandiyan dynasties were the only 2 dynasties in world having continuous royal blood line conquering for more than 2000 years, and Cheras dynasty having 1500 years royal blood line still having descendantry to Travancore royal family, having distinct history of each rulers described clearly in Tamil Sangam Literature. And north empire keep changing for years but in South, Tamil Empires are always stable over several millenniums. That's why Cheras, Cholas, Pandyas were called மகுடம் கொண்ட மூவேந்தர்கள் ( The 3 crowned Empires ) 🔥🥰

I really appreciate you for doing this. I live in tamilnadu, down south of India . I'm currently doing my 12th grade now and I'm a history student (humanities) . In despite of having Indian history as our whole syllabus for this academic year south Indian history barely plays 10% of it . I left out to be wondered about the negotiation of South Indian history regardless of having such a strong and long lasting ruling period .so for an example chola dynasty ruled over 1500 YEARS ( one the long lasted dynasties in the world history) and I barely have a page about them in my syllabus but I have a chapter about Magadha and Mauryas and their ruling period is just over 200 YEARS!

Honestly I live in Delhi and I agree with you. But Northies are taught only about Mughals and Delhi Sultanate in history, not even Indian kingdoms from post Ashoka to Delhi Sultanate. And barely any mention of South Indian kingdoms and no mention of northeast kingdoms.

Awesome video! I hate how South/Southeast Asian history is hardly ever mentioned (despite being just as interesting and complex) as European/ American history in the US.

It’s a shame there were very little information of the Tamil empire in SEA. Most of the history written were after the arrivals of the Western powers; eg English, Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish and the French. Prior to that period there were next to nothing written. Even in schools nothing was mentioned about the period before western arrivals in SEA.

ึDude . Cholo or Indian Tamil never ruled SEA. It just tried to dominate the trading root
@ila_vael

@@vandenhuud8570 Just search about Cebu dynasty in Wikipedia! Yes Tamil kings like cholas, cheras , pandiyas , Pallavas NVR ruled and looted SEA , but vandalized srivijaya kingdom cuz of trade disturbances . Also Khmer and Tamil kings had better matrimonial relationship than the tambralinga and Sri Vijaya kingdoms. There's many references in Tamil inscriptions and scriptures to the rivals with SEA especially against Buddhist dominance of Sri vijaya in Sri lanka. You can see even from the 300 BCE , trade was dominated by Tamil kings in Indian Ocean which are mentioned by Romans and greeks. So no need capture friendly kingdoms of SEA.

We do learn about Chola in Indonesia, it weaken Hindu-Buddhist empires throughout the archipelago, giving muslim merchants the chance to rise to power by marrying into local elites.
