The library being werewolf proof wasn't a coincidence as the room was designed to be a trap for the werewolf and presumably Prince Albert and Sir Robert's father were planning on tricking the wolf to enter once they'd got the diamond cut just right. If that meant the queen had to be there then Albert could probably convince her. The big, big coincidence in the episode is the diamond, not necessarily that she had it on her but that it was finished when it all went down. It hadn't been tested because nobody alive knew what it was for. It was incredibly lucky that the last cut had done the trick.

If the werewolf bit Elizabeth I or even Mary Queen of Scots, it wouldn't have been genetically passed down to the current line of the royal family, because none of them are directly related to the Tudors. 1. Yes, Jamie is the best. Sarah Jane comes close, though. Honestly, the Second Doctor's era is underrated in general. 2. This episode is far from "the greatest episode of all time," and the Shaolin-esque monks were... an odd choice. However, it felt like a typical Doctor Who shlocky episode. As for why the Werewolf (Lupine wavelength Haemovariform) didn't infect the previous monarchs or conquer England under Victoria, the Doctor explains that it took time for the wolf to grow strong enough in both cases. Now, they did just kind of pass it off, and never payed it off. Honestly, I always felt it was a fun episode, far from perfect, but the Scottish setting and the wolf itself, and even Victoria were all things I enjoyed. I can see your points, though.
@legoworld2463 жыл бұрын
I think part of the reason why 2nd Doctor is underrated is the fact that out of his 21 stories, only 7 exist in their original entirety today. Sure, not every story is completely missing, and there are animations and recreations and the audios, but not the original episodes themselves, which really hurts it, since only the more invested fans would actively seek it all out. More casual viewers would either skip it all, or at most only watch the surviving stories, which, again, are less than half.

What troubles me about this episode is the lack of followup to the werewolf's line "There is something of the Wolf about you." After the whole Bad Wolf motif of season one we get this line from the lupine wavelength haemovariform and then that's it until "The Day of the Doctor". They toss out a line that directly refers to a major character arc, and then have it mean nothing. The show got caught up in the whole "Bad Wolf meme" idea and started putting it in willy-nilly, which is why you get Bad Wolf Bay and "there's something of the Wolf about you." It's like Bad Wolf became a concept of its own rather than an idea with a purpose. (Calling the beach in Norway "Bad Wolf Bay" makes no logical sense, because Bad Wolf wasn't about saying goodbye to the Doctor. And it also wasn't about the end of the world like the Doctor says in "Turn Left." It was about saving the Doctor. So doesn't it make more sense if it's a place where they find each other, instead of a place where they lose each other? Twice?) And that "there's something of the Wolf about you" line could've easily been a jumping off point to a new storyline. Since when you stop to think about it, Bad Wolf must have had some long-term impact on Rose. If River Song was "human plus" by virtue of being conceived in the Vortex (if you can ignore the fact that a child in utero could be affected that severely by something that the parents show absolutely no reaction to makes no sense), Rose must be even more changed since she actually held the Vortex herself.

Defending The Despised: Firstly, the reason the wolf doesn't simply bite an earlier monarch in history is explained by the fact it had to grow from a single remnant cell and develop over hundreds of years. They directly address this in the episode, and its also why Queen Victoria doesn't immediately turn into a wolf when only bitten, as the cells needed a long time to nurture and grow. The doctor and Rose reference the modern day royals potentially being werewolves, which is a nice call back to the fact it takes time to nurture and grow. The wolf's motivations aren't just to gain control of the throne and create a 'steampunk paradise', it's to utilise the power of steam technology in the very productive and innovative industrial revolution (the most advanced moment in human history up to this point, from both the wolfs and the residents' perspective) and take it to the stars to conquer and have an intergalactic empire powered by steam. Which is actually terrifying and pretty high-stake, if you ask me. I think the best way to look at this episode is through the lens that it's a base under siege type episode in more ways than one: firstly by the monks who protect the wolf, and then when it transforms, the wolf itself. The whole narrative of the child going missing once in a generation is a reference to how the monks nurture the werewolf cells to grow, by stealing local children to be hosts. This along with the mistletoe-deterrant arc really add to the whole mystique of the wolf, making it akin to vampires with the whole garlic thing. Queen Victoria travelling to get the koh-i-noor recut is an excellent plot device too, as it explains why she's in that area in the first place but also gives the whole 'Albert protecting her from beyond the grave and planning it all years in advance with Roberts' father' arc too. The fact that it's an alien that looks like a wolf makes no sense, but neither does the fact a dalek looks like a squid, or that Time Lords and most other who aliens are all humanoids. The house staff stumbling upon the mistletoe idea separately to the the doctor is interesting too, as it lends to the whole base under siege thing with everyone working together, but not necessarily from the same angle, in order to try regain control of the house. Personally, I love this episode. The joke the doctor makes at the table when sir Robert asks him if he noticed anything was wrong and he replies "bald athelitic men, wife away, I just thought you were happy" is comedic gold. The gravitas of the performance of queen Victoria in my opinion lends to this episode being a sheer classic. Who knows why it's so overlooked. Who, Nose...
@aaronteague35124 жыл бұрын
Also, the diamond being recut by Albert was to get it perfect for defeating the wolf. The fact Victoria was on the way to get it recut, was because Albert had died. She didn't do it to fit the telescope she didn't know anything of, she did it in honour of her late husband who she was clearly grieving. The monks are the ones that stop the train queen Victoria was travelling on. It was NO coincidence. The monks knew it was likely that queen Victoria would stop off at torchwood house due to her husband's ties to it. They know so much so that they hijacked the house and pretended to be staff and set up their entire operation there. Don't you think if the monks knew that Victoria would continue to get the diamond cut and even knew when, that it's entirely possible that Albert saw that this would happen and so set up all the defences in torchwood house incase it ever did happen. As a precaution, not a prediction. Seems wholly plausible to me. It's also entirely possible that Albert and Sir Roberts father set up defences at torchwood house in the room with the telescope purely to protect the telescope from ever being sabotaged by the wolf on any attempt to destroy it. The original intention might not have been to let the wolf infiltrate the house, but rather to lure it close and trap it with the telescope, possibly in an entirely different location to where they stored and worked on it. All of the subtleties and implications in this episode are integral to the plot and must not go overlooked!

Being a history nerd, the only thing that bugs me about this episode, (I like this episode a lot) is that it would have been better with Queen Victoria before she had her children. Yes she had a genetic condition in her blood that was hereditary, but by the time of the episode, she would have already passed it to her child, Leopold, who struggled with it all his childhood. If she got the bite in 1879, he theoretically wouldn't have had the blood condition, and historically- he died 5 years after the episode was set. So I would have had Victoria younger and childless because then it explains the blood disease passing through her children better. I know it's fiction, but if you're trying to create an explanation for something grounded in fact- maybe don't write in that she got it after she would have passed it on already...

Pretty sure it was never confirmed, The Doctor and Rose were mostly joking about the possibility. He also figured that she'd be more or less still human if only a small amount of it got in and that "a single cell could take a century to mature", so presumably it only would've been a problem for her descendants if anything. There *was* technically a follow-up called "Empire of the Wolf" starring the 11th Doctor back in 2010, but it was a choose your own adventure book and almost certainly not canon.

The issue is that Harbo didn't provide the entire motivation. The werewolf kidnapped young boys so that it could bite them and then transfer its consciousness into them. The goal was to bite the Queen and then transfer into her, thus becoming the ruler of the British Empire. The Queen is bitten, but the werewolf dies before the mind transfer, thus she is a werewolf but is in control as herself, rather than the alien. And he has the benefit of future knowledge, where there is no Wolf Empire or plague of werewolves or anything, so all there is is the possibility that the royal family might be werewolves.

In defence of the resolution to the story, it's clear that Albert didn't think that Victoria would have gone to Torchwood house. I doubt he planned for his own death either. The plan would have been for himself to trap the beast in the house, using the telescope and the diamond to finish it off but his death meant that couldn't happen. The coincidence is used not for the resolution but to build tension in the story. The coincidence isn't that she was there and happened to have to diamond for it, we know why she was there and would probably be the only reason she would take that route. Chances are the diamond had long since been cut the right amount for the job, but Victoria herself didn't understand that and kept cutting it, which wouldn't negatively impact the diamond's ability to refract the light and "concentrate" it as the story implies. Ironically, I'd say you bringing up "Coincidences to get characters into trouble are great; coincidences to get them outof it are cheating" actually works in the story's favour. Again, the coincidence was to get the Queen into trouble, but the resolution works well within the confines of the story. Not saying it's a perfect story, but I think between many of the performances (Mr. Torchwood, Queen Elizabeth and The Doctor and Rose in particular) I think it's a pretty good episode. I see a lot of people seem to dislike it but I think the CGI is fine and it's a good monster of the week plot. I also like the out of place monks. Sue me.

This is one that looks good on paper. Classic monster, we all know what a werewolf is, and queen Victoria, we all know who she is, yet it doesn’t really work in practice. I think they were trying to be too clever for their own good. Trying to solve the mystery of Victoria's blood disease whilst also doing the koh-I-noor, and referencing the large number of assassination attempts is too much. It’s so convoluted that I failed to understand half of what went on the first time around. And why didn’t they just use silver bullets? I suppose that would have been too obvious. I liked the mistletoe. That was something new that was quite interesting. The diamond making the moonlight overpower the wolf was lame and contrived. It would have been better if the Doctor had worked out that hitting the wolf with focused moonlight would kill it and that he could use the telescope if he reversed the magnification, only its fixed in position so he needs something to refract the light, but luckily Victoria has a perfect diamond, so he bodges something together with that. Making him use someone else's plan takes away some of his agency. Doctor Who is at its best when it takes a familiar pop culture element and gives it a sci-fi twist. The problem it that they seem to have forgotten what show they are on. The Werewolf is just a werewolf, it’s the full cliche, there is no sci-fi twist to it other than the fact the virus came from space. Contrast this to the Vampires of Venice (and I give you a rare example of an instance where the Moffat era does something better than the RTD era in my opinion) where the titular vampires are an alien species, that through an imperfect disguise seem like vampires, and indeed can be killed by sunlight and have a plan revolved around draining blood from people, but are actually aliens that look nothing like the vampire myth. And as for the Doctor and Rose. Unpopular opinion but I don’t like them as a duo in season 2. I’ve realised in rewatching that Rose's relationship with nine was perfect, but it was not great with Ten. This episode is basically the first proper adventure with the two of them together (the previous episode had Rose possessed by Cassandra for most of it) and it highlights the problem. Rose is more interested in getting Queen Victoria to say we are not amused, because that’s all she knows about her, than taking an interest in what’s going on around them and it gets increasingly cringe inducing as the episode progresses. It’s fine when they are apart, but the second they are back together they morph into giggling school kids. She thinks it’s all a game and he does nothing to discourage this dangerous thinking. It’s just a poor episode which unfortunately is a pattern in season 2.

They did reveal that the werewolf was actually a sentient virus, hence why it would turn the queen and the royal family.

Tbh I kind of forget Tooth and Claw exists. The only thing I really remember it for, is the fact that I always forget about it. It's just meh.

I actually really liked this episode, because of how the presentation of the werewolf differs from other portrayals of werewolves in media and the acting But I see what you mean

I agree about the monks. I never though they belong in Victorian Britain.

Christianity had warrior monks, the Knights Templar being the most well known example. And the brethren would have needed to practice martial arts to be able to keep each new host imprisoned while the infection progresses. There's probably a stage of this process in which the new host has more-than-human strength, but still retains enough of their original personality to want to escape. They certainly can't shoot a host that tries to break loose, so learning the best techniques to smack one into submission, even foreign techniques, could have been their best means of getting it back in its cage.

Ace is my favourite classic who companion but I absolutely adore Jamie too so the James McCrimmon reference made me squee when I finally caught it (I didn't catch it as a kid because I was only seven when it aired and was more focused on the werewolf).

When i was a kid i was terrifed of this episode, i couldn't watch it by myself, the monks were super scary for me. Now it's one of my favourite episodes, the same with the mommy one.

its a guilty pleasure, watch it every halloween , and i LOVE This Episode and whole concept and Ideas, i would like to see a SteamPunk Space Empire run by Where wolves. If it been in a Dr WHo comic please tell me. Alos the music is AWSOME in it, and the seane with the wolf transforming infront of rose is just a treat for the eyes.

this is where Rose and Ten's smugness and self-importance became hard to watch, especially watching Rose turning into Ms Superior getting even worse in an otherwise excellent the Impossible Planet. Fortunately they were to revert back to the likeable characters they had been but in this episode the jokes were not funny just childish and plain annoying.

I actually don't have a problem with this episode. Only gripe I have wth it are the Kung Fu monks. Would have been more interesting if they had been like normal but very ruthless and determined monks infiltrating the estate with inquisition and brutality. Would have made them even more creepy.

Apart from the weird monk scene at the beginning, I liked this episode, its setting was refreshing and the dinner table scene was poignant, although Rose was a bit tiresome with her trying to get Victoria to say that misquote at very dodgy times

I AM NOT AMUSED... OK, I just had to say that... Oh WOW! Thanks. Your video exemplifies GOOD writing versus BAD writing. All the points you made on the "Tooth and Claw" episode were all valid. But I never noticed them till your video. Where as Chris Chibnall's Doctor Who is just plain BAD writing, that it stands out and his mistakes have no where to hide.

I was always iffy on this episode, too many people got used as meat shields and the Doctor never really seemed pissed off enough about it for the "everyone's important" mentality he tends to operate on in other episodes. Also they kept reusing that one single damn piece of swelling tension music four or five times until I almost want to mute the whole thing.

I’ve never been a big fan of this episode, so I usually end up skipping it when rewatching the series. It just seems so disconnected from the rest of the series and I can’t help but find it so boring and a drag to watch. Not worst but not the best. Definitely not amused!

You've said why you don't like Tooth and Claw, but I've never felt any of that. I really like the episode, certainly not the worst of Series 2, better than episodes 1, 7, 8, 10 and 11 (and joint with 4).

Yeah I agree with you @HarboWholmes this episode is pretty forgettable to me, and a little bit too "random" for my taste. Even for "Doctor Who". Not to mention over the years I have found this episode to be quite boring and I also skip it too. The only thing I really liked about this episode was Rose's outfit and that's about it. Although I did also like the Werewolf idea, but yeah, it was pretty terribly executed though (at least in my opinion). So I also agree with you on that and pretty much everything you said in this video. Also it was a nice change of pace to have a video of yours where you not praising every single episode you talk about. I respect that. Also on a side note: I actually liked "New Earth", I think it's a "fun/funny" episode! I would always rather re-watch that episode over than "Tooth and Claw". #sorrynotsorry

That whole blood condition thing being passed down hereditarile here makes no sense because by the 1870's, all of Victoria's children would have been born so how could she pass it on?
