Both of my 110 - 200 TDI's temp gauges only read; totally cold, not totally cold and catastrophic meltdown.

The original engine in my Series III used to burn oil at that rate, but then again it also had next to no compression either. In fact, it was so bad that you had to do the valve clearances every 500 miles! I bought another engine for £50 (back when you couldn't give away 2.25 petrol engines) and that worked for a couple of years. In the end, I purchased a NOS block and had a Turner head fitted to it, and run it on nothing but top quality oil. It's been all over Europe, and well as Southern and Eastern Africa, and it still runs perfectly to this day. Probably uses about a litre every 2,000-3,000 miles.

I was curious when you said the chassis there were in good condition and started looking. My goodness they were indeed in good nic, at least for the ones i saw in EAC and SADC. Guessing the rainy season didn’t impact it as much. Regarding checking the vehicle, it’s reasonable to assume (self maintained) fleet vehicles would at the very least take care of the servicing and consumables. When i got my row tdi, it was my first 4x4 and my first ‘old’ vehicle, so i did the boring thing of checking the oil, the coolants and looked for puddles. This despite the restorer and mechanics’ reassurances. The shop did have a good track record. Nonetheless, if something were to happen, while they would no doubt ‘make good’ on shortcomings, i’d be the poor sap stuck in the middle of the road somewhere, so what the heck, might as well add three minutes more to the seven minutes to warm up the old lump.

Considering how much crap was coming out of the exhaust, you should have paid more attention to the possibility of oil loss.

Definitely worth replacing the engine thermostat on a 300tdi as they are so easy to change in 5mins with a good quality (never use unbranded) one as your heater won't work without it, it will be much worse on fuel, weird smoke as you get incomplete combustion when they mostly jam open, easily forgotten part and fundamental to smooth running, once you get it to run at normal position on gauge, it with start to give itself a de-coke..........

We have all done it the ASSUME others know or actually care about what they are doing, you really must always check yourself! I usually try to add a simple checksum to any question to qualify the response i.e. you haven't checked the oil & tyres have you? answer yes (oh no!). My dad had an Austin 1100 which was a serious competitor for loss & burning oil, using nearly as much oil as fuel!

Yep your rings have gone. Bet you the cylinders will be beyond a rebore 30thou I believe. On my tdi took head off for top end overhaul and could see serious wear on cylinders. Put it back and it ran for about 10000 km used no oil and then one day it started. Drove Johannesburg to warm baths about 120km and oil level dropped by about 1 l with no loss of power. Had engine overhauled and the wear was to great to rebore so I had sleeves fitted with std pistons. That was 7 yrs ago and it's still going strong

I have 3 Discovery 300TDI, and 2 Range Rover 300TDI and if you need to check the oil that often and it's not leaking you have a severe problem, at the very least it should be smoking a lot using that much oil.

Renault traffic engines can be really bad for this , my friends for example will use 1L every 200miles and the one we had at work was even worse . Usually the turbo seals go and it ends up burnt or in the intercooler. Yours looks like it's similar , a lot of oil around the inlet manifold, I'd expect quite a bit of oil in the intercooler by the looks of it.
@aynalemredae8605
@aynalemredae8605 2 жыл бұрын
its probably the turbo as i can see the inlet manifold is smattered in oil... i heard about one newly rebuilt 300tdi that run out of oil on its first trip and destroyed its self...funny thing is it didn't have noticeable blue smoke...fan from Ethiopia cheers!

Hazard lights instead of head and fog lights when driving in fog is a curiously African and south Asian habit. They adamantly refuse to use head lamps in fog in daylight, saying they can see the road and utterly incapable of understanding the idea is to be seen by others. The hazards rendering indicators useless is a moot point - they never indicate anyway.

Look at the oil on top of the intake manifold. It's being pushed out of the pipe coming from the intercooler. It is probably a faulty vacuum pump causing excessive breathing. Mike from Brittanica restoration had one that breathed a lot because of this. Intercooler is most likely full of oil.

Never over fill an engine with oil, it's as bad as running an engine dry.
@flight2k5
@flight2k5 2 жыл бұрын
Why do you say that?
@Silverback1969MoonLandingLies
@Silverback1969MoonLandingLies 2 жыл бұрын
@@flight2k5 if you overfill an engine with oil you will pressurise the engine crankcases and the breather pipes can then start syphoning the engine oil, in extreme cases the engine will literally start running on the engine oil as well as diesel, when that happens you can drive without touching the throttle because the revs climb to cruising speed, I did it when I was young and so I know the theory and have experienced it as well, 60mph without touching the throttle and I had to turn the engine off everytime I wanted to brake.
