I have a 1995 Chevrolet S10 in Brazil which is equiped with the same engine, there are only a few differences. It is called Maxion HS here. Your videos have helped me immensely. Mine is leaking a lotta oil in hard to find spots. 350.000km. I wish I could drive it up to your shop to give it all the care it needs.

Nice fix Mike. Engine looks good. I've eventually got myself a Mapp Gas torch like yours. I've got a copper cylinder head gasket to anneal for the wee stationary engine.

Great quick tip on the install requiring the cam lobe to be at vertical. I bent up some stainless brake lines I had extra to replace the plastic vacuum line over to the brake booster. Overkill? Yes, but it's a permanent solution and required just a few minutes of matching up and cutting. It's late March here in SLC and we've still got snow... not sure how it is in Québec, but mon Dieu, this winter has to end sometime.

Thanks for answering that question Mike, I thought it may have been a legal/liability issue with the electric vacuum pump experiment, I can fully understand the situation. The elec-vac pump system I fitted to my old '98 Disco is still working perfectly after four years in service, that's according to the Disco's new owner. If I was still into Tdi Disco's I'd never entertain that Wabco pump system again, it's just an overly expensive oil leak source. Cheers, Gary, NQ. Australia.

Yeap - it can be done but if someone screws up with wiring, switches, timers ... HOWEVER! Look at this! www.amazon.ca/Premium-Vacuum-Compatible-Replace-5102084AA/dp/B09S3PVM14/ref=sr_1_199?crid=3ACWPWVRIDAR5&keywords=vacuum+pump&qid=1679879771&sprefix=vaccum+pump%2Caps%2C106&sr=8-199 Scrapyards are full of these old diesels - you could easily bolt it to the A/C pump mount Interesting!

Currently sorting braking issues on the 300Tdi 90. Replaced the servo but the vac pump is weak, so Im fitting a 12v vac pump from a Volvo (and will also replace the original pump) then have them both connected via a T piece. Volvo pump will be powered via the brake switch so it boosts the vacuum when brakes are applied. Belt and braces! Also will be changing to Ferodo pads as unimpressed with the Mintex ones I fitted a while back - I think they were built to last, not to stop the vehicle...

You may be wise to run an adjustable timer as well as the vac switch - when I was experimenting I found the vac switch was cutting off too early, so the pump could not give maximum vac Just a thought

Interesting work as always. Forgive my ignorance but does the vacuum pump supply a vacuum to the brake servo? Des it have any other function? Not sure I knew engines had one! Thanks

I have an issue with my brakes on the 300tdi, the vacuum pump is leaking oil so I know it needs replacing but my brakes are awful, they barely stop me, and don’t lock up. I’ve replaced the discs pads and front calipers so I’m at a bit of a loss. Is it the vacuum pump that’s not giving enough pressure??
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 9 ай бұрын
Sounds like a typical brake servo problem - they tend to leak. You cannot fix it - replace

Another interesting video. I’m thinking of buying a smoke machine but can I use it on an old engine that’s full of oil?cheers Mike.
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations Жыл бұрын
You can, but it is best free of oil - because the oil could be over a potential leak, but no pressure to force it through

Mike, does this mean you can disable the pump so that it doesn’t run on the cam by removing that foot but keep the pump for sealing the block and for aesthetics? The pump only operates the EGR valve on my RRC, and that had been blanked off anyway, so I had been thinking of cutting the foot off, but this looks really easy if it’s just a matter of grub screws and prying out the foot.

a hell those pumps, they getting rip off your money pretty often, they failed too much, had 3 failed over the years its not funny anymore, the last one hopefully survive longer. Its a Wabco and we use 2 paper gaskets homemade. The garage were about 2 hours busy with it to replace the pump, do it yourself isnt easy if you havnt a wide varity of tools as the pumps bolts are hard to reach
