Pigeons are a domesticated bird that we sort of abandoned. I dont know how many places did this but we used to build pigeon towers for them as a good source of fertilizer and the occasional bird for dinner. I think this might be why they arent so great at making nests.
@musewolfman
@musewolfman Жыл бұрын
They're descended from cliff-dwelling birds, and basically, the premise of their "nests" is to keep the egg from rolling away. They don't need a complex structure because they already have a solid base to sit on. Mourning doves build similar nests, and are not domesticated birds.

I live in Scotland and the ones I go to have changed the design so there is no lid but the cardboard folds down a little to act like one. So it's just a big cardboard tub. Sometimes they don't fold the top down either which would mean the hedgehogs would be able to get out of them more easily :)

My dog (a goldie) befriended a hedgehog when I lived in Germany. When we'd go for his walks, he'd stop at its bush, and it would come waddling out to say hi. He occasionally picked it up and carried the hedgie around with us, but was always gentle, and always put em back at their bush before we left.

But then they couldn't sell the 32+ oz cups because I don't know about you but I don't trust those lids enough to keep that much liquid in. Not to mention the fact that it is probably safer to give out cups with straws simply for the people who are drinking from their soft drinks while driving. (To be clear, the first argument was mostly sarcastic in that people rarely really need a 32+ oz cup, the second argument was an actual argument).

@@christianstonecipher1547 I mean people seem to mange Starbucks coffee cups just fine in the cars. I also understand that straws are very important for individuals with physical disabilities that make drinking harder without the use of a straw. So my suggestion is that straws would be available upon request with the sippie cup lids being the default. Also apparently Starbucks has a 30oz cup with a sippie lid.

I hate, hate people who throw food wrappers out the windows of a vehicle. I really noticed it now that I've moved back to the country, the amount of random garbage in the ditch is crazy, I have to go once a month to pick up all the garbage. I mean, how hard is it to throw it out when you get to where you are going???
@zebnemma

Yep people that throw garbage out of their cars is the laziest people in existence. Even more lazy than the people that are walking and throwing trash on the ground. The one walking is lazy for not carrying their trash 20- 100 meters max to a suitable bin or putting it in their pocket in the meantime. The ones in cars tho.. Can just put the trash aside and let the car carry it for them. What is the logic exactly? What possible reason could they have to doing that? If they are afraid that they car is gonna messy then don't eat in your car in the first place. Maybe they are too lazy to take the trash away when they arrive at their destination and just let the trash sit there for all eternity and they don't want that? Either way you are the epitome of trash person for doing any of this, regardless of your weird reasons. I've seen cars that are filled with trash from probably months ago if not years. So people this messy/lazy exist. But atleast they aren't throwing it out into nature so there's that.

one day I was working outside returning shopping carts to the store, and there was a pigeon hanging out by the exit under the roof/awning. at first we thought it was injured or something was wrong with them, until someone shooed it away and it got attacked by what I believe was a hawk (I don't know birds well enough to be sure though). luckily it dove under a car parked in the fire lane, and returned to the original spot by the exit. when customers would ask about it afterwards, I would tell them why it wasn't flying away, but sometimes people would still try to make it leave if I wasn't there. hopefully the pigeon got to live a full life after that rough day

First I've heard of the McFlurry...says something about how long it's been since I ate McD's. At this point, I'd have to be starving, and no other food available at all. McDonald's stopped making tasty food decades ago. To be honest, it's gotten difficult to find a good hamburger---the popular places either sell low-grade meat, like McD's and Wendy's, or overcook it to the point all fat has disappeared. McDonald's, as a company, has sucked for a very, very long time. Since their food went to awful, I can't understand why they're still so successful. Is it just that a lot of people have barely functioning tastebuds?

Speaking of birds who don't know how to handle cars... My SO and I were driving on the west coast of Canada and came up on this vulture in the middle of the road. Instead of hopping to the side or flying up, it ran the same direction we were headed. Then it started flying in the direction we were driving. It happened for a good 30 meters and we were worried that this bird was just too stupid to realize that it had all this space around and refused to use it. Finally it got the hint and fly off to the side. Birds make me wonder how they have survived as long as they have.

So, litter has pretty much always been a business problem. I remember reading that back in the 60’s when Coca Cola switched from glass bottles with a deposit to recycle to plastic bottles, they saved $0.019 per bottle, BUT local governments suddenly had to pay more people to pickup trash and empty public trash cans more, and pay for more landfills to be built, and so it cost local governments an average of $0.03 per bottle. And the industry response to this was to blame the consumer for being litter bugs. Even the famous ad with the Italian guy in Indian-face with the single tear was part of a PR campaign to shift blame. Same thing happened back in the 1930’s when cars started hitting people in residential blocks, and instead of doing what many European cities are doing now and having parking garages and making people walk the last few blocks, with many streets made pedestrians only, they started a campaign to blame jaywalkers, when “jay” was an epithet about uneducated ignorant country folk that would start a fight. It’s hard for me to see plastic bottles as anything other than a way to steal taxpayer money, it cuts cost for the business by sticking government with a bigger bill.

in defense of the 'soulless corporation' the lids may not be needed/used by the customers. However, the lids do serve a purpose. When mixing the mcFlurry with the spoon, the ice cream rises up and if the lid were not there, it would splatter everywhere. The only option they would have to is to put the lid on and then throw it away before giving it to the customer (which would still be a waste and not save them any money) OR they put less in the cup. If they put less in the cup customers would complain even more.

I'm sure someone else has commented this, and my experience is from an American McDonald's not a British ones, but as someone who worked for American McDonald's, the lids were for when you mixed the flurries so the ice cream didn't fly everywhere. Not that they always worked as the kids didn't want to stay on either. However a mix of my last point and the fact the holes on top were large enough that a thin wristed person could use them as an unsightly bracelet, I don't think the American version of the lids would have the same issue. Which is still baffling because why not use this version of lids everywhere so not only is less plastic being used (very thin in addition to my previous points) but also you wouldn't have to worry about the hedgehog pandemic anymore of they can escape. But what do I know, I'm just a non-corperate American.

The cleaning to office job analogy doesn’t quite work, though I do agree with the ultimate point. While one could say that it is the job of the worker to correct the reports that are getting sent his way, the fact of the matter is that the one who initially wrote it also had the job of ensuring it was done correctly. Where this fails is that a customer doesn’t have that same obligation to clean up after themselves, at least when you take morals out of the equation.

Literally afew days ago the hamsters I bought my daughter died. We had 2, both sisters. One ended up eating the other despite the fact they had food in the cage. Hamsters are nightmares

Our oldest cat, in the days before he died, managed to convince my wife that he was dead twice. Lying in our bed, not moving, and apparently breathing so shallowly that she couldn't tell. I nudged him, he put his head up to see why he was being disturbed. When he finally kicked off, I didn't find out until I'd been up for a few hours. Heh. Made our son come dig a hole, because neither of us are in good shape for such work. Better him than me...when our cats die, I can barely deal with moving them, not even touching them...I have trouble understanding societies where the family does things with their dead family members, cleaning them, dressing them in different clothes, etc. When I was in the navy, I got stuck on funeral detail for some months--it sucked to carry dead strangers' coffins. Why can't they just get volunteers for such things?

Best thing I saw that was presented in a Bio lecture at Uni was that in an east asian country they sell coke cans sealed in plastic. Like how USELESS can packages be???

When my hamster died I kept his little body in a box with the lid off. I also put him in a flower pot but put him near the top. I was really scared I might have been wrong thinking he was dead and actually kill him.

So confusing! Sure it may have an upfront cost to change the system to make the lids just a bit smaller. But you get money back over the long run with that slightly less material. You earn SO MUCH MORE in free marketing and headlines for doing a good thing. Its a SUPER WIN. Who is their marketing person? Fire them!
