I'm a Deckhand. The whole "square knot" thing is 100% accurate. Its actually hard for me to force myself to tie a square knot wrong in order to show people how it looks when it's wrong. The Square Knot (or Reef Knot, cause it's used for reefing sails) is drilled into sailors so thoroughly that in the days of tall ships the easiest way to tell if your shipmates were stealing from you was to tie your bags up with knots that looked like a square knot, but weren't (usually a thief knot). If it was a square knot when you got back from watch, someone went through your stuff.

The show aired from 1984 to 1996. And yet, some of the episodes feel like they're set even earlier than that. Some people's behavior and speech seems old-fashioned (such as the head of the school and his daughter in Night of the Headless Horseman - not this one so much.) Or maybe I've just lost sight of how long ago the 1980s really were. It's surprising somehow to see so few female executives and professionals - but on the other hand, the one there are are often positively portrayed, often standing up to their male colleagues and working with Jessica. And they don't seem to be turning out to be murderers or victims. Agatha Christie, who wrote in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s, had women doing things that seemed ahead of their time...and then a lot of those women murdered or got murdered.

The difference between a granny knot and a square knot is that a square knot will stay tight, but a granny know will loosen slightly before it stabilizes tight. I was taught that in a first aid course in case I ever had to tie a tournequet but a tournequet is a last-resort first-aid method, where you trade life for limb, meaning you use a square knot to completely cut off circulation to the limb and kill it and assume it will be amputated, in order to prevent the patient from dying due to massive loss of blood from the wound on the limb. If a granny knot is used on a tournequet it will loosen before it is fully tight, allowing coagulated blood into the bloodstream, causing an aneurysm or stroke and killing the patient. But that wound in this episode was clearly not life threatening, so I don't know why it matters that much here.

I've got a recommendation featuring Sheriff Tupper, specifically his last canon appearance: Season 4 Episode 18, "Benedict Arnold Slipped Here".
@ravenpoe70935 жыл бұрын
Yes! One of my favorite episodes I liked the “closed circle” aspect and the cast. Ive seen it several times and still sometimes forget who the killer was. After seeing Rue play Blanche Devereux its fun seeing her in her usual early mousy characters so different but then again she wasn’t so out there in the first season of GGs either. This episode also reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode that takes place in a road side cafe and features martians
@anitacrumbly Жыл бұрын
this trope was also used in a Twilight zone episode down to the bus the rain and a diner and dang I forgot the name of the episode but it was the only episode to use it so shouldn't be too hard to find. Its also no real spoiler to also say it involves the idea of aliens.

Yay!! I was hoping you'd do this one! 💕 A little bummed that you didn't mention the actor who was Inspector Queen in Ellery Queen as rambling old man but next to Rue Mclanahan and Linda Blair he kinda pales. Not to mention the Ellery Queen 1970's series kinda flopped at the time but Idk why I think it's very well made.

Did anyone else have one of those old tv's in their house and there was a thousand and one pictures on it? I swear my aunt had about 30 pictures of us on her tv. And when it stopped working she still kept it because she had nowhere to put the pictures.
@Kisai_Yuki5 жыл бұрын
My Grandparents (both sets) had those massive TV's. Dad's parents TV, the chassis was wide enough to have three set-top boxes on it, and deep enough to have a row of pictures on front and on top of all that stuff. They also had a fake fireplace/liquor cabinet. Those TV's were massive and solid you can have 300lbs of equipment on them.

I love this episode! I've always remembered it, too. It's one of the series' best. Oddly, though, I don't recall who the killer was. It's been a while since I've watched it. I'm on season eleven at the moment, so I'll have to work my way back to it in good time. I can't wait! Oh, I had a TV very like the one the sheriff was hoping to win growing up. I loved that thing! "Wait, rewind. Druze?" This was a classic beat 'em up back in the day. As an adherent to an esoteric, Western Asian offshoot of Islam, you have to fight your way through a series of increasingly difficult levels. Until you defeat the final boss, Al-Ghazali, and manage to rescue Plato from the Cave and save a batch of disparate gnostic texts. #Only80sKidsRemember

I haven't always been impressed with Amos or Mort - but in that episode you mention, I thought Seth was pretty cool - with his focus on his patients and sticking up for Jessica. And a woman health inspector who knew her science.
@jessicalillianweinberg44014 жыл бұрын
The show did start to re-use settings / premises. Granted, all murder mysteries have some similarities, but there were, for example, two episodes of diners at a diner getting sick. The other one is "Tainted Lady" in which the diner owner is, of course, a friend of Jessica's.
