Yeah, but if he hired a woman as a deputy, then he’d have to PAY her to be better than him, and we can’t have THAT! If a woman’s going to be better at his job than him, she’s going to have to do it out of the goodness of her heart!
@jessicalillianweinberg44014 жыл бұрын
You know, I didn't think of that. While Jessica has met some, well, antagonistic law enforcement people over the years (including a few females - sometimes it's about amateur-vs-professional, more than gender), Tupper and many others seem to recognize their basic incompetence and welcome her help. The officer in "Murder at the Oasis" seemed way TOO accommodating...and then there was a twist.
@jessicalillianweinberg44014 жыл бұрын
The episode "Deadline for Murder" features a female law enforcement professional with whom Jessica commiserates about the "boy's club" thing - but she is also among the more skeptical about Jessica as an "amateur." That episode also features a spunky female reporter-editor, although they unfortunately do the cliche of having her be ambivalent about how serious her relationship is, then say at the end she'll likely get married. As someone who was a very young child when this series got started (I didn't watch it then) - it is kind of a "culture shock" to see so few women in important or business positions...but there are a few, and the ones I've seen so far haven't turned out to be evil or murderers or just victims.
@jessicalillianweinberg44014 жыл бұрын
There is also the fact that Jessica's strength is on the intellectual side of detective work, not so much on the physical (for lack of a better word.) She certainly isn't going to make arrests herself, and while she has an uncanny ability to make murderers confess / give up / like her too much to hurt her - she usually doesn't confront one without law enforcement or someone else who is good with a gun somewhere nearby. And, once in a while she finds herself in a danger, with a murderer who threatens to hurt her in order to escape. There is even one time she is rendered unconscious (ether or something) and left in a building that's being set on fire.
@jessicalillianweinberg44014 жыл бұрын
Marigold is competent - but I could imagine her getting over-zealous and clashing with Jessica because Jessica didn't agree that the arrested person / prime suspect was guilty, much the same as what happens with Amos and Mort.

It seems like this show often does the sit-com-ish thing of having a new person come to town, then we never see them again. That also happens with woman known as "Mariah" in The Witch's Curse - even though Jessica clears her name and she supposedly seems to decide to stay. Or, we meet someone who has lived there forever but we've never seen them before. Mariah is similar - a woman with a mind of her own (although not a police-person). I almost feel like they don't want to keep other competent women around because Jessica has to stand out.
@Lisa_FlowersАй бұрын
@@jessicalillianweinberg4401 I've noticed this as well. It's always been weird to me that Jessica doesn't have many steady or reoccuring female friends or loved ones similar to Amos or Seth. And most of the other women in the show either aren't as independent or competent as she is, or when they are, there's usually something revealed to be 'wrong' with them (they're cheating on their partners, they're the murderer, they're the victim, they're greedy or abrasive career women who we're clearly supposed to dislike). That, or they never appear again. The are few exceptions to this (she has a niece who reoccurs and is intelligent and kind) but other than that, most of the depictions of the women outside of Jessica are pretty awful. It's the weird paradoxical nature of this show. In some regards, very forward thinking when it comes to it's depictions of women, specifically Jessica as a single older woman with a rich, meaningful life, who is often the smartest person in the room. But it's also filled to the brim with negative and misogynistic portrayals of basically every woman who isn't Jessica, and seems pretty set on validating a lot of assumptions about what roles women should take in society. If you're not Jessica, you're either a opportunistic and cold career woman who is probably cheating on your husband or a Wife™ who enables your husbands shitty behavior and has no life outside of them.
@jessicalillianweinberg4401Ай бұрын
@@Lisa_Flowers We do some competent and independent women who are friends of Jessica's or whom she gets along well with - I'm not sure the Mother Superior in the convent episode really counts since that's a traditional thing (although she was...spirited). Edna from Taxman comes to mind - she got divorced but it doesn't seem like either she or the husband did anything really bad to each other. And there's the actress friend as well as a very nice AND competent female investigator (who got promoted over men, and whom Jessica works well with) in Murder in White. But the key word from your comments is "recurring" - we only see each of them once. There is also the weird paradox that someone is a "dear friend", yet only seen once - and often it's because Jessica is helping them out of a crisis and yet the crisis seems to have been ongoing for a while before she gets there (like in Unauthorized Obituary.)
@jessicalillianweinberg4401Ай бұрын
Phyllis Grant says that Jessica inspired her to run what had been her husband's and her business (travel agency) by herself (but they don't seem really close) and in some episodes Jessica is friends with Eve Simpson, but that varies. I also really like Anne from Race to Death - whom Jessica supports - but again, she's only in one episode. (And she has a boyfriend she will probably marry - but if they were going to give her a boyfriend I kind of wish it would have been Deputy Andy!) There is also the fact that Jessica often reacts negatively to be people (both men and women) who do the kind of investigating or exposing of wrongs that she does - think of When Thieves Fall Out or even Trevor Hudson. And while she's happy when her former students -male and female - succeed as writers, she lectures them about how it's wrong to base characters on real people (Sins of...). I mean, doesn't she do that?)

@@Lisa_Flowers Every Golden Girls clip on KZbin has comments about how great a portrayal they are of women that age - especially with the dating lives. But the Golden Girls seem very insecure and unhappy - Jessica is where they ASPIRE to be at that age. And the Golden Girls can also be mean - to one another and others. Angela was vocal about not wanting Jessica to be in a relationship - but if I weren't aware of that, I would say some of the dynamics with the male friends feel almost like dating (and we can actually see that a number of the men like her in that way. I always think Blanche D would be quite envious, actually.)

Although while Marigold IS gutsy, eager, and hard-working, it seems like she could have been TOO zealous in some situations and still needed Jessica's help to get her facts right. This show definitely doesn't have as many females high up in business, or the media, or, yes, law enforcement, as a contemporary one would. I think most of the business women there are are fairly well-portrayed - they're not all murderers and they don't all get murdered (in many cases, Jessica is clearing their name and it seems like she's kind of fighting for them against the grief they get from the men.) The female law enforcement officials come across as competent, but not always Jessica's allies. However, we can see that this is somewhat because they have a high stake in proving themselves competent.

I am so happy that all seasons of "Murder, She Wrote" are available to watch for free with ads on NBCUniversal's new streaming service "Peacock" because I can watch the episodes that you have reviewed of your "that time on murder She wrote series" like this one for free with ads.

I don’t know why, but even though I never particularly liked “Murder She Wrote” when it was on the air, I LOVE your videos. Your enthusiasm and goofy comments are delightful.

"Doc... how is he?" Dude he's dead... they don't have a cure for that yet. As always, great video, Roses. I've probably said this before, but I really like the way your commentary matches the "sometimes serious but sometimes silly" tone of the actual show. You do a great job at giving a fair summary of the episode, but still manage to throw in a bit of humour every chance you get. I always find your videos uniquely entertaining, and this one was no different.

Recently watched a series four episodes "A Very Good Year for Murder" it was strangely uneventful considering in involved, a Billy Zane and other notable actors, The mafia, a Vineyard, gambling, shoulder pads, Jessica Feltcha on a horse and the ending had me a little surprised.

Just made my way through the entire “That Time on Murder, She Wrote” playlist again (for some odd reason, this episode is on there twice 🤷🏻♂️), which is always an enjoyable way to spend a few hours. You are an awesome person, and do amazing work, and I don’t feel like I tell you that frequently enough. It’s always great hearing you gush about things you love, like this (admittedly pretty great) show, and I’m definitely looking forward to the next Time. 🙂

This is one of my favorite episodes, the Cabot Cove episodes are my favorite. I have a suggestion, an episode called " Seal of the confessional". It is a little darker and serious but fantastic. It takes place in Cabot Cove and would be great to cover on your channel. Thanks so much for these videos, they make my day.

The title of the show is from an old Irish song, "Who Threw the Overalls in Mrs. Murphy's Chowder." This is my favorite episode! I love the new officer, Marigold Feeney doing her job, too. Two plots in one. Thanks for posting it.

I wait patiently for more Murder, She Wrote content. It’s never really been a show for me. I look forward to, when I can get the time, trying it out. However, even if I end up not liking it, PUR’s recounts of episodes has to be one of the most calming things I’ve encountered as of late. Since the beginning of the pandemic, my mental health(like many others) has taken a beating. Not only the virus and my subsequent job loss due to said virus, but also the loss of my grandfather and trying to settle into a job that I’m not suited for but is necessary, have made everything so painful and complicated. But watching these are like tiny pockets of serenity. Plus as a J.B. and wannabe writer, it’s nice to hear about one and her tenacity. I need 15 minutes of PUR telling me the delights of Jessica Fletcher.

One of my favorite episodes, so glad you gave in to popular demand. It's not the best episode, nor does it have the best mystery, and perhaps should have been in two parts. But damn, I still love it. As for a suggestion, the episode "No Laughing Murder" is also great. It features a young George Clooney! And a guy who can barely act.

Great job as always PUR 😁 There’s nothing i enjoy more than a roller coaster of lukewarm emotions 😅 And it never ceases to amaze me the number of guest stars & character actors they cram into each of these episodes like Henry Gibson (Harold), who was the lead Nazi in The Blues Brothers, and Geoffrey Lewis (Kenny), forever-the-bad-guy from a bunch of Clint Eastwood movies.
