Sekhmet is an Egyptian God who is depicted as a lioness who drank blood. That's probably his inspiration
@louisvictor34732 жыл бұрын
@@SjofnBM1989 I think they are basically a perversion of her. Sehkmet is basically Hathor's enraged form (Hathor is usually depicted more human-esque) originally at humanity's wrong doing but she goes out of control and Ra needs to trick her into getting very drunk, chilling out and going back to normal. Hathor is herself a solar goddess (and a goddess of sexuality, she has a ton of children with various gods), and in Sekhmet form she is said to breath fire. So the vampires shapeshifting between werefeline and human forms, drinking symbolically innocent or pure "life force", as well as being very sexually active but apparently being not that good at reproducing, it is all like a mockery of her one night stand with unwielding rage. This also probably explains why cat attacks can cause them to combust, as they're basically acting as a much more tame and controlled avatar or conduit for her and her righteous vengeance - she is just showing the wannabes how it is really done.

Cats in King’s universe are almost like supernatural agents, sometimes like guardian angels for the humans they love. They have psychic powers, see things we don’t see, and have both an ancient wisdom and a ferocity that belies their fuzzy shape. King loves cats and has/has had pet cats in real life. He was also heavily influenced by Lovecraft (as someone else mentioned below), who felt about the same way about cats. It probably seemed obvious to him that cats would be the ones who would both spot and fight the monsters, and the fact that sleepwalkers sort of resemble cats was just an extra element of their grudge match. On top of that, there is an old superstition that cats can fatally steal humans’ breath while they’re sleeping (particularly babies). The fact that this is sort of what sleepwalkers do to their victims in the movie, and cats do not, might be intended to hint at an age-old antagonism between them, where the cats have a long history of maintains their guard against and protecting the humans from the real breath-stealers (this theme was also used in Cat’s Eye; the main feline character, General, is also a really good example of the cat-as-guardian-angel theme).

At a guess, the reason why cats are the enemies of the sleepwalkers is HP Lovecraft, who loved cats and used them in more than one story as being the enemies of otherworldly forces, most notably in "The Cats of Ulthar." King is highly influenced by Lovecraft. The cats of Ulthar can do most of what happens in Sleepwalkers, including a swarm of cats finishing otherworldly monsters off. I mean, this is a poorly done "The Cats of Ulthar."

I like this idea, and there is a lot of superstition around cats having (at least) one paw on spiritual or supernatural stuff. Whether it's staring at walls (because "ghosts", not at aaaaall looking for bugs), or being a witch's familiar. :X Also, I'd like to point out that at the kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJCUpGBpeaucipY there's the 'lore' book with a depection of a sleepwalker and a bunch of cats surrounding it, there are flame around the sleepwalker. So...maybe the cats attacking itself triggers ignition? Supernatural defeat! Fluffy, Moose, Mister Wiggles, Tiger use feline mob attack! Bonus Fire Damage! It's super effective!

@@chaossmith3864 No, but that is... kinna the plot of Sleepwalkers, with the sleepwalkers are some nasty cat-killing old people to whom collective feline justice is administered. Is it the same story? No. "The Cats of Ulthar" is much better. But the hostility of the cats towards the cat-killing sleepwalkers and the ending share similarities with "The Cats of Ulthar." To me, it very much feels like a Lovecraft adaptation in the vein of The Reanimator, where a bunch of weird sexualized content is introduced because Lovecraft's stories are resistant to screen adaptation.

The Dimming thing appears in a few other King works such as Eyes of the Dragon and The Talisman, and it works the same way. This movie freaked me out as a kid and I can't hear a steel guitar without thinking of it. The cat attack finale is glorious though. My theory is that some ancient cats made a deal with some demons for this power and so normal cats resent them for it. I dunno, best I got. It's all just magic, and it's got unexplained rules. Man I'd forgotten about this movie! I loved Charmed and Stephen King back in high school. When I saw Brian Krause was in this I had to watch it. What a horrible idea, though it did lead me to my favorite of the "bad" Stephen King movies, The Mangler.

I have a weird love of this movie that my mom and I watched one random night when I was in high school or early college. It was so bad but deeply watchable to me. We saw it like two more times in the next couple days then never again. Honestly still love every part of it.

I remember when this came out. I saw it in the theater and remember enjoying it in a bad way, but that's because I'm a lifelong Stephen King fan. The movie version of Graveyard Shift is very much in the same vein as Sleepwalkers, thought it IS based on a King story, the movie goes off the rails. The late 80s/early 90s were the golden age of questionable-quality Stephen King movies.

Here we have a film with cameo appearances from some of the famous performers in Hollywood.... and Clovis the cat turned in literally the best acting performance in the film. Not even joking.

I wasn’t surprised that this was directed by Mick Garris (Stephen King adaptation, lots of director cameos) but was surprised it was a theatrical movie! I was so sure it was a made for TV movie. Still, lovely review, as usual. I love your MST3K-style riffs! Speaking of, I’d love to see you cover more Stephen King. For more crazy King we have The Mangler, but I’d love to see you cover some of the mini series as well. Mick Garris’s The Shining and The Stand would be fun, plus the IT mini-series! One minor nitpick, it’s John Landis not Jonathan.

Fun Fact: Diming is a re-occurring technique in the Stephen King Mythos. In his book "Eyes of the Dragon", the antagonist, Flagg utilizes diming a few times. And in the fourth Dark Tower book (Wizard and Glass), the character of Rhea of the Coos uses diming as well! Now you know

This movie used to always be on AMC's horror lineup during October when I was a kid, so I have a weird soft spot for it. Didn't even realize how messed up it was until I rewatched as an adult. 😂

I like how the human protagonists never end up having any idea what's going on, and the only reason the villains are stopped is because off-screen, there must have been a Cat Van Helsing who rounded up a posse of the local cats to deal with the problem themselves.

Hey, I totally never noticed the teacher is Glenn Shadix, the guy who played Otho in Beetlejuice and voiced the mayor in The Nightmare Before Christmas! Gotta love a good "that guy!" Although they sorta stop being a "that guy from that other thing" once you remember their name.

I genuinely enjoy this movie because it plays out exactly like one of King’s novels. Long periods of not much happening then suddenly it goes from 0 to 100 then back to 0. Bought and framed an original theatrical poster for this movie I loved it so much.

Eyes of the Dragon explains dimming as not being invisible (which the book says is nearly impossible), but just sort of blending into the scenery. That's....... not exactly how I pictured it. Agreed that King is always fun to watch, whether or not he's a "good" actor. A better actor probably couldn't have carried The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill, you need someone who's basically playing the whole thing as a goof.

It's not a 'so bad it's good' movie, but I'd love to see you review Death Becomes Her. It apparently was supposed to be a Tales From the Crypt, like Bordello of Blood and Demon Knight, but it stands on its own and it's a really fun movie! (Plus Isabella Rossellini is absolutely gorgeous, would that I could pull those looks off!)
