The side story about the librarian actor and her insurance wasn't a one off, either. Apparently Angela Lansbury frequently had her friends and colleagues on the show, particularly the ones who had had long careers but were waning in popularity as they aged. She has a long history in Hollywood and Broadway, so she was acquainted with basically everyone. Given the murder rate of Cabit Cove I'm not surprised that they have a literal vampire around. Dude probably didn't even need to kill people himself, just nibbling a bit on the murder victim of the week in the City Morgue would be enough. Also if Vampire Lore is to be believed than Baker/Borbey isn't dead, since the Stake through the heart is only supposed to fix a vampire in place until you can decapitate them. So this guy isn't dead. *triumphant sound effect*
@tsubakiofmelancholy62972 жыл бұрын
As a vampire...expert myself. A wooden stake will paralyze the vampire until removed. Which is why you must decapitate the vampire and burn the body, then spread the ashes. However, if the stake is made of silver, or at very least the tip is coated in silver it can be fatal to the vampire. Again decapitate and birn body then spread ashes. You do not want to run the risk of it coming back somehow and wanting revenge.

Just as an aside to Madlyn Rhue's part in this episode, she was suffering from multiple sclerosis at the time which left her confined to a wheelchair which explains why her character was also in a wheelchair. Aside from that sad little tid-bit, this episode really is bonkers. Like, the show tends to dabble in the supernatural and the occult from time to time but how insane would it have been if Jessica Fletcher had to face off against forces beyond her understanding and control? I mean, Diagnosis Murder had an episode involving a vampire and Walker, Texas Ranger featured episodes with skinwalkers, Satanic cult members, psychic children and mystical Buddhist monks.
@lyinar7 ай бұрын
I think it manages to get away with the hints of the supernatural in this one because of how completely tangential it is to the actual murder mystery. By making the question of whether or not the photophobic guy with the lost Crane brother as a minion is actually a vampire completely unimportant to the plot, they can give a nudge and wink toward the possibility that he actually is in a way that they couldn't if it *did* actually matter.

This may be a weird thing because it’s something I happened to look into for writing purposes, but which wood you need for staking a vampire is actually quite varied! Ash was common in the Baltic states and Russia, hawthorn in Serbia. Aspen was very popular because it’s believed that Christ’s cross was made from aspen, and similarly any thorny plant is associated with Christ’s crown of thorns and considered to have power over vampires. However, at the end of the day, any local wood was effective because what are you supposed to do if you’re living out in rural wherever where there aren’t any aspen trees around in pre-fast transportation eras, and you’re pretty sure your neighbour’s gonna rise from the grave and drain your town dry? Ya gonna wait for to get aspen from somewhere else? No! Get whatever wood you’ve got and stake that mf! In fact, while using wood may stem from a belief that, to kill the undead, you cannot use something that has never been alive, metal tools and blades have also been used as stakes in what we now consider “vampire burials”, so wooden stakes may not even be necessary depending on your vampire lore! Source: Wikipedia, I’m not an academic with access to all sorts of research papers and historical records, I just do this for fun

He who is werewolf in life, shall become vampire in death. This was a belief because to be a werewolf in the olden days it involved black magic and devil worship. And those who practiced such things were not allowed to be buried on hallowed ground. Vampires were often believed to be caused because a body was not properly buried, like it wasn't buried on hallowed ground, it had no tombstone, it was never buried at all, that sort of thing. The belief werewolves become vampires in death actually would explain why vampires can turn into wolves.

Eventually down the line they split into two separate entities like divorced parents w/ both halves taking certain elements of the other. SIlver weakness being kept for the wolf.

A great, creepy, and memorable episode. Jess being menaced by Charles with that hammer is one of the most frightening narrow escapes of the series, in my opinion. Some other episodes I'd love to see you cover are "Reflections of the Mind", "Broadway Malady", "We're Off to Kill the Wizard", "Murder on the Thirtieth Floor" and "Threshold of Fear." Thanks for your great content. Would you ever consider reviewing "the Mirror Crack'd" with Angela Lansbury as Miss Marple?

I’m not normally one to comment, but I LOVE your Murder She Wrote videos! I was so excited to see a new one today, it dramatically improved my crappy day. If you are looking for a new episode to cover I would highly recommend “Trouble in Eden” season 4 episode 9. While trying to help a friend and solve a murder Jessica accidentally becomes a madam of a brothel. What more can I say than that :) Thank you for all the effort you put into your videos! Looking forward to more Murder She Wrote episodes!

Oooh another good episode synopsis!! I have one to recommend. Season 5 Episode 8, Prediction: Murder. Jess heads to Arizona at the behest of Frank's war friend. There is a party and a psychic shows up, and let's just say...things get fiery. Also the actor who plays Lawrence Baker plays the psychic and if you thought he was smooth here well buckle up because it's about to get smoother!

Don't you have to like post your building permit on site so everyone knows your construction is legal? I didn't think it was just a thing someone stuck in a folder until you take out a load-bearing wall and the house collapses. And even worse: Jess now has to go find a new, non-murderous contractor? In Cabot Cove? During Police Renovation Season?

Based on those clips, he did not even wrap up the body when he hid it. It would not be long before that entire room smelled like a rotting corpse was hidden in the wall. The room would also have a serious fly infestation problem as the body decomposed. Also, as body tissues decompose, they liquify that would make a gooey and disgusting puddle all around the base of that wall. (Thanks forensic science courses in college for that bit of trivia) It would have been a bit more realistic if the owner thought the old house has some horrible mold problem and maybe some animal got stuck inside the wall and died. Everyone who comes into the house complains that the room smells like death. The renovations are just to open the wall and deal with the growing smell and fly problem. But since the homeowner and his butler are always around the house, the murderer cannot find a good opportunity to safely remove the body without being caught during the day. Hence the murder of the homeowner and attempt to pin it on the crazy vampire hunter. Also, it would have been interesting to see the murderer getting increasingly desperate as the body decomposes and makes his efforts to keep it hidden more and more difficult.

Actually a wolf icon kinda makes sense! Dracula in the book is able to transform into a wolf at both noon and midnight. There’s even a scene where he controls the wolves at the local zoo when he goes to England! Also the people in town around his castle call him a German word that I can’t remember the spelling of that is translated in the book as meaning either werewolf or vampire, but in reality just means werewolf. In modern day there’s more of a distinction between werewolves and vampires but back in the day they were actually kinda close!

I really wasn’t expecting to hear my name in this episode tonight, but I guess if I was going to share my name with a Murder She Wrote character I’m glad it was the missing murder victim in the vampire episode! Honestly it kinda startled me when I heard it! And with the wolf head symbol, if I’m remembering my vampire lore right, wolves used to be associated with vampires mostly the same way we view bats today. Vampires were believed to be able to transform into and control them and some other dangerous or nocturnal animals. While both vampires and werewolves have a lot of history behind them, most of the lore people first think about for them are really modern, within mostly the last century. It’s honestly really interesting! 🧛🏻♀️🐺

The butler is played by Christopher Neame. He was in the never completed Doctor Who story, 'Shada'. I know nobody really cares, but I'm a sci-fi geek, so seeing actors who have guested on Star Trek and Doctor Who together on one show overjoys me! EDIT: Another one: Richard Gilliand, who plays Charles, was a guest star on the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood.

12:40 Maybe the previous owners weren't actually staying in the house when Laurel's body was hidden and Charles was afraid that trying to move the body while there were other people in the house was too risky. In fact maybe the previous owners had just bought the house and hadn't lived there yet. It would explain why they didn't question the new wall. At least I think Charles added the wall since we know it wasn't part of the original plans
@samuellawrencesbookclub82507 ай бұрын
Additionally, because of his photophobia/vampirism, Baker doesn't leave the house too much, it's a bit trickier to get rid of a body when a possible night-hunter is in the next room.

I’m kind of a fan of finding otherwise real-world shows ending with an “maybe they are realllll” coda. I recently caught an old Mission Impossible episode called “Dubrovnik’s Ghost” where they pretty much state that a ghost helped the team out. I think both Quantum Leap and Voyagers had “real” ghosts too.
@MrDj2322 жыл бұрын
Quantum Leap always had an element of the supernatural though. God was attributed as the reason he couldn't leap back to his own time without fixing the past. And there was a recurring antagonist hologram that was heavily implied, if not outright stated, to be a demon. Voyager on the other hand was just plain weird.

And then there was that episode of My So Called Life with the girl that turned out to be dead…and an angel.

I recently finished a full watch through of Quantum Leap and I couldn't believe the amount of not just implied but outright shown to you supernatural and otherwise in that show including but not limited to alien UFO's, angels, Bigfoot, Ghosts, Vampires, Egyptian Mummy's and the curses that go with them, The Devil himself, and of course The Evil Leapers in addition to all of the Time Travel + God/Fate/Bartender leaping him around changing the time line implications.

A note on the wolf imagery on the vampire stuff, wolves actually have a long history in regards to vampires, with vampires turning into wolves being a long standing power from what I gather. The rivalry with werewolves is a relatively recent (but still old) addition to the grater monster lore, as it were. Wolves were initially linked to vampires both because of a wolf's percieved nobility while also being a feared predator mirroring the stately and charismatic nature of vampires charming their victims into isolation where they strike. ...of course now I'm imagining Dracula in wolf form rolling over on his back looking for belly rubs as a part of his hunting routine.
