In my opinion, 'Heat' is one of the greatest films of all time and one of my favorites. I remember watching Heat in the theaters when it first came out and completely being blown away by the acting, directing, music, sound, cinematography, etc. Amazing movie.

32:30, this shootout is famous for its authenticity and the quality of noise. A former British SAS trooper trained Kilmer and DeNiro on how to shoot, reload and bound. Working as a tight two man team their characters actually advanced against superior numbers. I've heard it said that Val Kilmer's reload sequence is quite often used to train soldiers on how to do it under pressure.

Most people don't know that Michael Mann made another movie of this caliber back in the 80's called, Thief. It stared, James Caan & James Belushi. it was really good.

Two years after "Heat" hit the theaters, two heavily armed and armored bank robbers got into a shoot out with police after robbing Bank of America's North Hollywood branch. Today the incident is called the North Hollywood shootout. Twelve police officers and eight civilians were injured, numerous vehicles and other property were damaged or destroyed, and the two robbers were killed. I remember that day. The shootout was all over the television -- often in real time from helicopters -- and the analogy to this film was nearly instantaneous.

One of the best movies ever made. The dynamic between Neil and Vincent is so engaging, compelling and well made. One of the few onscreen dynamics that comes close to this one is the one between Ragnar Lothbrok and King Ecbert from Vikings. It is not exactly the same but it comes pretty close. You should watch that series.

Henry Rollins has a small role in this as Hugh Benny. He's a pretty interesting guy, singer for Black Flag. When Neal recruits Dennis Haysbert's character to be their driver, I always think of the movie Runaway Train. In it, Jon Voight's character tells Eric Robert's character what it would take to succeed as a convict living the straight life. One of my favorite pieces of film dialogue.

Clever foreshadowing too. The first job, the only one who DOESN'T kill is Chris - Waingro starts the killing, Neil kills the guard who picked up a pistol (he does so without compunction) and Cheritto executes the surviving guard. That might be why Chris loses everything BUT his life at the end.

I view this masterpiece as the third part of Michael Mann's crime trilogy, that being Thief, Manhunter and Heat. They are all thematically tied together, exploring criminals and police and the toll it take on their psychology. Another movie links to Heat too, and that's the 60's Steve McQueen film Bullitt - similar themes and an airport chase that Mann homages at the end of this movie.

13:00- I call it the Pacino Strut..It says, " I'm the meanest dude with a badge you'll ever see,,Don't mess with me." He even looked cooler doing it with a trench coat and beard in "Carlito's Way". And rapper Tone- Loc ( The bar contact from Phoenix) Gave him big props in one his songs.24:44.Neil should've listened to his contact/friend..There's no way you slip from a 24-7 cop like Hannah a 3rd time, and going back for Waingrow was even a worse and final mistake.

One of my top five favorite films. A masterpiece, as far as I'm concerned. We simply don't have films like this anymore because we don't have actors, writers and filmmakers like this anymore. Or at least it seems that way. This is a film for adults made by adults. That said, I was a teenager when I first saw this in the theater, and it still made an impact on me. I've lost count of how many times I've watched it since. I've yet to meet a person that's watched this film that doesn't like it. If I ever meet someone that doesn't like this film, I will have to keep one eye on them for all time, forever. People blow smoke up Christopher Nolan's ass, but he's been using this film as a blueprint for most of his filmography for his entire career. I hope he sends residuals to Michael Mann.

Pacino in an interview once said, that his character in this film was supposed to be a cocaine user. They filmed it that way, which is why you see Pacino is overfocused and high strung. The director decided to remove the cocaine use from the film and just let the audience think that Pacino's character is just intense.

Aria C, I was so thrilled when I saw that you made a reaction to "Heat", that I waited until Friday evening to watch it, as a means to kick off the weekend. I love this movie! It has everything you could want in a movie. This was an amazing crime/drama filled character study. Every character is portrayed wonderfully. The dialogue is top notch, and the music is wonderful. I agree with you about how beautiful the music is when Vincent is chasing after Neil on the freeway at night. It's great! Then the segue to the two of them having coffee in the restaurant. Great moment in movie history. I can't really add to what's already been said about this movie. Aria, your reaction was spectacular. I loved every minute of it. @@ariachanson01 You're so funny. 😁 One fun fact I can add from this movie is that actor William Fichtner who plays Roger Van Zant, had said that if his character were to get killed(murdered) in this movie, then he wanted it to be while he was watching hockey. Fichtner grew up near Buffalo, New York and is a big fan of their hockey team, the Buffalo Sabres. Sure enough, when Neil(DeNiro) breaks into Van Zant's house, you see a hockey game on the television. Aria, I really loved the fist you made after seeing the sleazy restaurant manager. I will re-watch your reaction, multiple times. Again, you deserve more and more subscribers. Take care, Aria!

The big stunt casting pulled off by Michael Mann was the reunion of Godfather Part 2's Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. Director Michael Mann made a name for himself with the classic 80's television show, "Miami Vice." It blended the MTV music video aesthetic with a slick police detective procedural set in the decadent excesses of Miami of the 1980's. Aria, if you want to see a movie that is VERY 80's (a snapshot of that decade) and is modeled after the Michael Mann "Miami Vice" filmmaking style, be sure to see "To Live and Die In L.A." It is not the absolute best film ever made and is a little choppy story-wise (more style than substance), but the BIG draw is another amazingly executed stunt spectacle by director William Friedkin ("The Exorcist" and "The French Connection"). You will wonder how the hell he pulled off such a massive and complex and very dangerous car chase sequence on the busy Los Angeles freeway system along with a machine gun fire fight similar to the heist scene in "Heat." He also throws in a scene of a racing car playing chicken with a real freight train. It is reminiscent of the car and subway train chase sequence in "The French Connection," another classic film from the 1970's. All done for real and at high speeds.

At the time, Heat had an A cast. Many of these were hot actors who were in high demand or were gaining a lot of buzz. Deniro and Pacino were the acting heavyweights, among the elites in the 90s. Almost everyone from the ground up was noteworthy.

I give you points (sincerely) for recognizing the fact that Neil (DeNiro) was actually SAVING Eady by running away from her. I've seen several reactions to this movie, and almost all of the people don't seem to get that part. He ran away from her because he knew she would be an accessory to all his crimes if he didn't get away from Pacino (which in the end he didn't). He cared deeply for her. Also of note, others have probably mentioned that this is a remake of a TV Movie Michael Mann directed called L.A.Takedown. In the TV Movie version Eady refuses to go with Neil. And last, if you liked this film you should check out Thief (1981), which was also directed by Michael Mann. The plot to Thief (1981) is very similar to this (a high line crime team with a leader of sorts that wants out of the life and needs one more big "score"). Thief stars James Caan, Jim Belushi, and Willie Nelson even has a small role. Thief didn't perform well at the box office in 1981, and I always thought Mann basically just took another shot at it with L.A Takedown/Heat. I think Mann was drawn to the idea/plot and because Thief failed at the box office he decided to try this sort of story again etc. I saw Thief ('81) and Heat ('95) in the theaters when both of them were released. Thief I saw at the drive-in theater. Thief is very good and is rated highly on IMDB and other film sites. I do think Heat is better, but it's close. You should check out Thief (1981).

Great reaction video, Aria! Heat is a fantastic crime drama- one of my all time favorites. I totally agree with you about the scene between Pacino and Deniro in the Diner. That scene really defines the movie and their relationship. Being able to sympathize with both sides speaks to the brilliance of director Michael Mann. The driving shots at night with the music playing are reminiscent of Miami Vice, the series Mann executive produced in the 1980's.

DeNiro and Pacino at their prime. Two stand out scenes is the coffee shop and the gun shootout. Michel Mann directed this. He was famous for the tv show Miami Vice which was this mtv style with music and urban night scenes. That Highway scene was classic Mann. Love it. You sound sick you're losing your voice. Get well. 24:40, one thing about Hanna (Al Pacino's character) that a lot of reactors don't catch during this conversation is that in addition to being a law school grad, a seasoned cop and former Marine, he is also a graduate of the Marine Corps sniper school. That is why later he is able to take out Michael Cheritto (Tom Sizemore) with that single well placed headshot. Also if you notice everyone on Hanna's team carries a regular length shotgun or automatic rifle except Hanna. Hanna actually uses a rifle with a shorter barrel to allow for quick exit and entry of a car and maneuvering in tight spaces. He may not be active duty anymore but he still operates like a Marine. 27:12, the backstory of McCauley is that he is also a former Marine like Hanna. Marines tend to see one another as brothers in arms no matter the time they serve. So when Hanna calls him "brother" he wasn't just being facetious or using it as a general term. He really does mean it that he will feel badly if he has to put McCauley down. This conversation is two fold 1) to allow Hanna to meet his quarry face to face and 2) to allow Hanna a chance to give a brother Marine a chance to walk away.

100%. Vincent is a professional. Trained in numerous Police departments AND in the US Military. In a one-on-one gun fight Vincent was always going to beat a skilled amateur, like Neil. Neil was a thief, not a marksman. Vincent was a marksman of a very high level.

One of my favorite Directors of all time. "HEAT" had a huge influence on Christopher Nolan when he made THE DARK KNIGHT(2008) Highly recommend Director Michael Mann's 1st theatrical film 🎥 THIEF(1981) The late great James Caan🙏 does one of his Best Performances & the whole cast is Amazing 👏 including the music score by TANGERINE DREAM 🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵 Michael Mann worked with Chuck Adamson during the making of THIEF(1981), who was a real life MCU Lieutenant in Chicago along with his partner Dennis Farina. Both have roles in the movie as well. Chuck Adamson really did have a one on one conversation with the real Neil McCauley, they spotted each other outside in a parking lot. The scene where McCauley hears the noise from the cops staking out really happened. Chuck Adamson & Dennis Farina would later work with Michael Mann on his hit influential series in the 80's MIAMI VICE & CRIME STORY as actors, writers, & advisors with their Law Enforcement experience as Detectives. Check out "HEAT" before it became a Warner Bros production. It was a TV movie called "L.A. Takedown". You can find it on KZbin, 80% of the cast were guest stars on MIAMI VICE(1984-1989) It's a fun watch. There's also a sequel that got released as a novel a couple years ago, "HEAT 2". It's both a sequel & prequel. I'm currently reading it and it's great. It's actually under production as we speak & its been well casted so far, for 2 characters. Definitely recommend reading it if you want to find out what happens to Chris after the events of HEAT & back story of Hannah, McCauley & Chris before the events of HEAT. If you like this one, you will definitely love PUBLIC ENEMIES. Set in 1933 Depression Era, about John Dillinger & the start of the FBI. You're going to like the cast of actors👌 Get well soon & Take care =) One more thing, All of Michael Mann's movies are a must watch Lol. My 1st introduction was with LAST OF THE MOHICANS(1992)

"that's the discipline." either deniro changed or he was always lying to himself. he couldn't leave kilmer behind at the shootout. he couldn't leave van zandt behind. he couldn't leave waingro behind. when he finally was forced to leave his girl behind it was way too late. he broke his own number one rule too many times.

Agreed McCauley definitely broke his own rule. That said he was a Marine and Chris was a member of his crew, I'm not surprised he went back for him. As for Van Zand and Waingro, they basically caused the death of his team. In his own way honor and grief wouldn't let him let it go.

it would be interest you the know, it's based on actual events, in the 60's there is a real neal McCauley, real robbery in Chicago of an armored truck, waingro was actually killed in prison by Neal's friends actually crucified. the cop and neal actually had a dinner. also this is a remake of a tv Movie LA takedown. it's been dancing around Michael mann's imagination for years.

Most female reactors don’t understand what Neil did by talking to Chris’s wife and reassuring her….. He doesn’t want Chris stressed out for the near future jobs coming up because Neil knows having Chris and his demolition skillset will ensure a successful heist…. Meaning more money for his stressed out wife that wants to have stability along with Chris… but Chris is restrained by wreckless gambling spending habits….. Neil wants to give Chris one more chance with a large sum of money and if he messes up then it’s on him… But that’s a classic tactic done by navy seals and special forces. If you have someone useful with bad habits you’re going to invest in them in every way you can to make sure you get the best possible outcome with them……

The love story with De Niro and Amy Brenneman is my one beef with this movie. I know he needs a romance arc so they can play out the "walk away in 30 seconds" premise...but the way it's written..the way she's introduced is just not believable and there's no way he is her type. They should have cast someone else, not make her so "normal" and have them meet in a different way.

Emil was Romanian, Larry was American. If they had spent a bit of time at the range, they could have cleared out every police officer who was waiting for them when they walked out of the bank. Their fatal mistake was walking in in black with their masks already on; had they been a bit less overt, the passing police car would not have given them a second thought.
