"As far back as I can remember I always wanted to be a gangster." Fun Fact: After Joe Pesci's mother saw the film, she told him the movie was good, then asked him if he had to curse so much. Funny How Fact: According to the real Henry Hill, whose life was the basis for the book and film, Joe Pesci's portrayal of Tommy DeSimone was 90-99% accurate, with one notable exception; the real Tommy DeSimone was massively built. Method Acting Fact: Henry's last day as a wiseguy was the hardest part of the film for Martin Scorsese to shoot. He wanted to properly show Henry's anxiety, paranoia, and racing thoughts caused by cocaine and amphetamine intoxication. Ray Liotta had never been under the influence of those drugs, and found it difficult to accurately portray. Mirror On The Wall Fact: Paul Sorvino wanted to drop out of the role of Paul "Paulie" Cicero three days before filming began, because he felt that he lacked the cold personality to play the character. He called his agent and asked to be released from the film. Sorvino's agent told him to think about it for one day before making a final decision. That night, Sorvino looked in the mirror and was frightened by the look on his face. He realized that that look was the look he needed to play Paulie.

Also except for the fact that the real Tommy Desimone was much more of a psychopath than the movie portrayed. He was much more brutal and violent than Pesci's character of Tommy Devito. Also while based on the book by Henry Hill, Hill was a notorious liar and embellished a lot in his book.

The real Tommy was even more fucked up as his movie counterpart. He once shot a man, a total stranger, in the middle of the street late one night when he was in his late teen. He once tried to rape the real Karen Hill, too. Everything about the murder of Batts was true, apart from the welcome home party and the shine box remark happen a few weeks prior to the actual murder. They really did wake up his mother (played by Scorsese's actual mother here) and she made them a meal all the while Batts was still alive in the trunk. They had to go back and dig the body back up, too. Everything about Spider is 100% true, too. Some theorize John Gotti, the last great Italian American mobster and who was close friends with Billy Batts, either presided over Tommy's death, or killed him himself. The meat truck thing was true, too.

FUN FACT #1: The cop who puts Henry in the Witness Relocation Program in the movie is the actual cop who put the real Henry Hill in WRP... FUN FACT #2: The is a DVD release of "Goodfellas" that includes an audio commentary track with the real cop and the real Henry Hill...

Henry Hill said of Tommy (Pesci) that the guy was a pure psychopath. The story with Billy Batts happened exactly in the movie except the fact that Tommy killed him two weeks later and not on the same night. The story with the waiter who told Tommy to go fuck himself was also true. Tommy DeSimone (his real name) once in front of Henry shot a guy in the street at random just to try a new gun he bought. Henry shocked asked him why he did that, Tommy said: "Well, I'm a mean cat." Tommy DeSimone disapeared without a trace in 1979, the likely event was that he was killed on the orders of future crime Boss of the Gambino familly John Gotti who had been a close friend of Billy Batts. Henry and Jimmy were associated with the Lucchese familly and when a familly wants to sanction a murder of the member or associate of another familly they usually ask for permission (unless they're at war) meaning that most probably Gotti asked the permission to Paulie to have Tommy whacked and Paulie was probably fed up of Tommy violent unpredictability.

Before I ever saw this movie, I watched a regular segment on the 90s cartoon, Animaniacs. It was called Goodfeathers, about a trio of pigeons modeled after these three. Every episcode, the one based on Joe Pesci would get, offended, do the "am I a clown?" Routine and get into a brawl with the Ray Liotta pigeon. Was funny, but i didn't have the full context of the jokes until I watched this a decade later.

Seeing the quote of the video made me think of the line said by Jerry Seinfeld in the animated movie Bee Movie; "This isn't a Goodfella, this is a Badfella!" Which actually has Ray Liotta in that movie voicing himself. RIP Btw, here's a suggestion for a follow up to this movie and they both fit very well as a double feature; Casino. It's also directed by Martin Scorsese, also has Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci in it and it's also based on a true story (except that one wasn't 90% accurate like this movie is) =) And also, you're a funny lady, Aria ;P XD ;)

Great reaction Aria like alwyas, love this movie. Some fun-facts about this movie, some of the real criminals portrayed were actually toned down for the film, the infamous “funny how?” scene wasn’t in the script. This famous (if not the most quoted) scene comes at the beginning, when Pesci's Tommy DeVito jokingly-yet-uncomfortably accosts Henry Hill for calling him "funny." In addition to being the driving force behind the scene on screen, Pesci is also responsible for coming up with the premise. Both of Martin Scorsese’s parents have cameos in this movie. She plays Tommy's mother in the infamous dinner scene following Billy Batts’s murder, but the family connections hardly stop there. Tommy’s mother’s painting of two dogs sitting in front of an old man ("One's going east, and the other one is going west. So what?") was actually painted by co-writer Nicholas Pileggi’s mother. And Scorsese's father Charles also pops up as Henry’s prison compadre who puts way too many onions in the gravy. The large “f**k” count was mostly improvised, among the many things Goodfellas has become famous for over the 30 years is its liberal use of the word “f**k.” In all, the expletive and its many colorful derivatives are used 300 times. I dont know how this movie only went home with one Academy Award. You should react to "Casino" (1995) is another masterpiece from Scorsese, with De Niro and Pesci. Keep up the amazing work.

They originally wanted to name this movie “Wiseguys “ the name of the book it’s based on but that name was already taken by another movie. Wiseguy is a term American mafia members used to refer to each other its used a lot more than Goodfellas but they had to settle for Goodfellas instead.

Aria, fine reaction from you. Goodfellas should have won Best Picture at the Oscars that year, but it doesn't always work out. If you want more "Serious, crime/thrillers", then I highly recommend the movie "Heat", with Al Pacino & Robert DeNiro. I know other people have suggested it to you, and with good reason, you'll enjoy it. I would also strongly suggest the movie "L.A. Confidential" with Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe & Guy Pearce. "American Gangster" with Denzel Washington & Russell Crowe, and "Collateral" with Tom Cruise & Jamie Foxx. These are all very good crime/thrillers that I think you would enjoy. I could go on and on with you about movie suggestions, but I don't wish to overwhelm you. Looking forward to you continuing your adventures with Indiana Jones. You are the best, Aria C! Jimmy would end up dying in prison also. Meanwhile, Henry Hill left witness protection. There are old Howard Stern show appearances where Henry would show up drunk most of the time. Casino is the follow up to this film. The Irishman is, in my opinion, the 3rd in the trilogy. It is also, in my opinion, Scorcese's best gangster film.

@@ariachanson01And even movies inspired by true events can have fictional aspects to them to amp up the drama, as I'm sure you realize. The filmmakers and studios have to put butts in theater seats after all. Though, with the mafia (Italian, Russian, Asian, etc.), these guys (and gals) are sometimes as bad or worse than what is depicted in movies or books. They can be real psychopathic monsters.

its the greatest film of all time imo - one of the reasons is that it is such a rich film, the script and the direction are so good, Ive seen it about 20 times and every time I watch it I always notice something Ive never seen before. my only criticism is that the last 10-20 minutes it runs out of puff, however this is just because the 2 hours or so before is paced at such a breakneck speed. Tommy is also one of the all time great screen villians, absolutely terrifying

I love this movie, my 2nd favorite mafia movie behind the Godfather movies, bit while this movie was based on Henry Hills book, its not strictly accurate at all. Henry Hill was a notorious liar and went into great detail of embellishing the facts. He was so bad that the NYC prosecutor who flipped him as a witness said after the Jimmy Burke (Jimmy Conway in the movie) trial that if they had to just rely on Henry Hills testimony they never would have convicted Jimmy Burke. Hill was a terrible witness Henry Hill was on the bottom of the mafia food chain. Not even a member of the mafia just a member of Jimmy Burkes crew. Paulie Vario (Paulie Cicero in the movie) and Hill never had a close relationship as Hill wrote in his book. Vario didnt even know who Henry Hill was. When Vario's attorney told him they had a witnesses and told him who it was, Vario replied, Who the F is Henry Hill."

FYI: Mob guys from the 70's era have said that the cushy prison life that Henry Hill brags about simply didn't exist. Hill was not incarcerated in a jail or even a state prison. At the time, Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary was a maximum security prison that housed some of America's most dangerous criminals. In the 70's, Lewisburg had a high number of rape and murders and was under intense media scrutiny. The idea of any inmates, even mafia guys, living such a cushy lifestyle was pure fiction created by Hill who, at the very least, was an unreliable narrator.
