That was Complicated 😅 (But We Figured it Out!) - Sick Week Recap - Video 7

Delayed because well… it just took that long to figure out. In hind sight everything always looks sooo easy to figure out and diagnose and at the ends it’s usually a big fat DUH! But, the time spent trying to figure out the issue when there were so many contributing factors is critical. We took our time and went through every scenario we could to find out what the real issue was with the 55, find what all we hurt, how we hurt it, and figured out how to fix it and prevent it going forward. And I am EXCITED to see how the 55 is going to perform now! Next race is the Sick the Mag Shootout in Bradenton Florida during NMCA March 17-19. We are going to head down early to test (assuming parts make it in time) and that will be a HUGE help. Minor set back at Sick Week but that’s just knowledge gained. Let’s goooo!

I really enjoyed this episode, informative, technical, humorous and fun. Engineering is all about *PROBLEM SOLVING* and it seems that you have had a lot of niggley problems (niggley is a word like melty, it should be used more often!) Bedding in piston rings is a bit like bedding in a Cam, it either happens and all is well or they polish the bores and it's all a nightmare! Ah yes, Methanol is the detonation king, saw so much damage during bb/fc days, really enjoy seeing you and your dad working together, also you have amazing vendor help. We did it by the seat of our pants back then, ran over cranks, burned up fc bodies it was crazy, just sayin I think you'all are doing it the rightway!

Alex and Dennis Good team together. I think you guys are the envy of many. I am a civil and structural engineer in my mid 60's As a young designer that was keen to set the world on fire, an old PHD engineer that was mentoring me on the side, took me to lunch. Yeah. Had a good talk. Basically went like this : Remember, if you err, err on the side of conservancy. That way you dont fly in the face of the wind and destroy things. When you destroy things you cost a lot of money to repair it. And kill people. Money is nothing. Dont kill people. You get to sleep better and stay out of jail. I listened. Carefully. I had a great deal of respect for this man. Up untill today i still sleep well and stay out of jail. Back to motors and things. I applied that thought to everything i did after that. If i didnt know, i waited untill i did. And i was involved in some crazy street racing for many years. Only ever lost one engine on full throttle. Cars and bikes. We were going over 200 mph on the street in the late 70's early 80's. That took some doing. Talking about big daddy Don Garlits. He had the mindset too. Try your best not to break it. If you not sure, dont run it. And he never broke much in his career. A legend to learn from. So, watching the two of you deciding not to make a banzai pass, and possibly destroy the motor, gets big kudos from me. My respect ratcheted up miles by watching that. Shows respect for each other, shows a humbleness and a respect for your car. The thing with breaking stuff, you got no control over whats breaking and where its going. Well done. All great info, great diagnosis. Bottom line: 1-use SS braided for lines with heat. 2-Maybe perform the initial break in of rings/cylinders with regular quality gas, and ensure the rings/cylinders, and lifters for that matter break in correctly. Great video, enjoyed it, Cheerz !!!

Noticed in your HOLLEY screen, RPM was all over the map while spooling the turbos. 2.)The summary that I have heard someplace, by introducing oil into one’s fuel and air mixture, causes loss of power. Usually a big part of the problem is that oil burns like low octane which can cause problems. It also burns dirty so builds up carbon which can cause hot spots and more problems.

With Engines, there are a lot of factors to try and compensate for. You tweak one thing and throw another out. Engines are a fine art of Balance. Fuel ratio, Timing, boost, trans. All in a brand new build and switching to methanol instead of pump gas. That is how you create a cyclone or tornado. It takes a while to get everything balanced. Once you two get it balanced. My guess is Alex will hit mid to maybe low 6's without raising a sweat! That car is going to become a BEAST. Good Video, BTW, Excellent Info for true car fanatics. p.s. when at Bradenton, look up Dr. Tune em all! That guy and Cleetus's dyno will make that 55 Sing like a rockstar.

The valve reliefs sharp edges should be lightly softened and the tops of the pistons either heat barrier coated OR what we did for high end turbo engines in the 90's was tape the entire piston with duct tape except for the top face and then glass bead the top, this will allow the entire crown to take a nice even carbon coat which will adhere in the finish created by the glass beads. THIS will act as an insulator and minimize hot spots in the combustion chamber. Learned that one from the guy who built GAS RHONDA's Cammers.

I prefer a rod through the block than loads of tiny problems, and when you find and fix one small problem it seems that this just exacerbates another of the small problems and I end up chasing my tail, then I become frustrated and impatient and cause more small problems. Sometimes it's best to take a step back and laugh at myself!

SHRINK TUBE DENNIS!...... It's pretty thick and tough in the larger sizes..... and it's lightweight, cheap, and stays in place and comes in colors.......You could also make slip covers from heater hose...... All kinds of good ways to keep braided stainless from sawing on your chassis!

Alex, talk to your dad about finding a bent distributor shaft. The symptoms are random and nearly impossible to isolate the problem. BTW, you will never bore me! If you want to share engineering puns, this is the place. The Interatomic bomb is when the interatomic bond is stretched to the breaking point and an explosive failure event occurs. Most people have never heard of interatomic bond so they have no idea that interatomic bomb is a pun or a reason to laugh. Be careful to not be taken in by the term, billet aluminum! Billet aluminum is another word for cast aluminum. It is cast into large blocks then machined down to size. Billet waste is huge as most of the metal is scrap! Casting to size then machining to shape is much cheaper. Forged is cast under pressure or hammered . Extruded aluminum is formed with great pressure behind a die, just below melting point. The grain structure is the point. Cast and billet aluminum will have a ball like bead grain, which is weak and cracks with ease. Forged aluminum will have an elongated grain depending on the size of the hammer. Many times the die is the hammer, but shot peen can be the method. Extruded aluminum has a swirling, elongated grain when coming out of the press, but then once cool it is stretched to elongate the grain further and to cause the metal to reduce size to specs. Thanks for the detailed analysis and family humor in presenting the facts! Remember your audience is mostly problem solvers and not phone zombies.

Based on what you've said about methanol would it be best to thoroughly break in on gasoline/mild tune? 6s were never going to come easy, that's part of the reason to chase them. All the explanations made sense and Drag and Drive events are always going to set a steep learning curve. You did what you had to do, ask questions and listen to experts in their fields, then pull together an answer that acknowledges any problems or errors, so you can fix them. Then you stitch it back together and go again. It's why we love motorsport, it rewards persistence and taking care and pride in your work. Go get 'em!

If the damaged piston, spark plug, and valve were all the same cylinder I’m curious is the spark plug dropped the tip which stuck the valve just enough for the piston to smack it which bent or tuliped the valve and caused the lack of lash.

At least you only had 8 cylinders, we had a 36 cylinder radial aircraft engine that didn't bed the rings after a rebuild (due this time to the wrong rings being fitted), the oil consumption was spectacular!! as was the crankcase pressure. A large percentage of 3550 cu in of air will do that you know :)

Thanks for the update. First I was shocked to see your awesome 55 Chevy 210 purpose built drag car pulling a trailer. Then as I was watching the first video I started wondering if that by using the 55 as a trailer puller on a cross-country road trip, might it lead to any adverse wear & tear issues under race conditions. I mean that's a whole lot of engine for steady highway cruising for a lengthy bit of time. But then I realized this may not have been the first time y'all pulled the trailer on a racing road trip. Either way, thanks for explaining about the cracked "melty" piston.
