The movie never compromised its childlike perspective or sense of imagination, the world remained consistently dreamlike and innocent through all the frustration and confusion and anger. I think this is the moment where Max's emotional journey into his psyche is at its deepest. We establish early on in the story that his father isn't in Max's life anymore and his mother and sister are busy with other people.....but if you really LISTEN to what Carol is saying right at the beginning....I don't think he's talking about Max being King. "YOU were supposed to keep us safe. YOU were supposed to take care of us....we were all supposed to be together". I think this is Max's deepest emotions bursting to the surface.....its not really Carol talking to Max, it is Max talking to his father.....and his mother and sister as well and coming to terms with that pain that he didn't know how to express before. Because if you notice, shortly after this moment is when Max chooses to return home. Now that he has come to terms with that pain, he can go home again.

When me and two of my friends watched this movie we made this theory that the monsters all represented certain people and Incidents in max's life at the beginning of the movie. Like look at Carol for a sec, sure both him and Max are different people, but they're similar in a way, they both want to have fun, and both felt left out by everyone else because they didn't want to do what Max and Carol wanted to do. K.W. Represents Max's older sister because she always leaves the group to spend time with her friends, just like Max's sister when she left to be with those guys who attacked max with the snowballs. Judith and Ira represent Max's mum and her boyfriend. It's pretty obvious with this one since they're always together as a couple. And the scene when Judith argued with Max about apologising and eating him is like Max arguing with his mum. And when Ira was clingy to Judith he pretty much was the mum's boyfriend in that scenario when he flirted with her before Max ran away. Alex now, I think he also represents Max in a way, because during the rock war, when Alex got strucked on the back of his head and his arm, he got annoyed and didn't want to play anymore. That also seemed familiar when one of the teenagers Max played with in the snowball fight, broke his igloo he made. Max was so upset and when his sister left, he went to his sister's room to cause a mess out of his anger. Next is Douglas, Carol's best friend. To me, he also represents Max's mum, because out of Carol and Douglas, Douglas is the more mature who keeps and eye and help Carol, plus this scene in the video, obviously represents when Max and his mum argued she tried to send him to his room only as a result, he bit her shoulder, both Max and Carol got called out for being out of control and also as reply during their arguments, they both yelled that they would eat them up. And finally the bull monster, now I don't have much to say about this character, but I think he most likely represents Max's dad. Since the bull was silent during the movie till Max was leaving, I can't exactly remember what he said but I think it was he asked Max if he could tell people about them or if he will still remember them while he's away. Whatever he said, I believe that was a way of when Max's dad was leaving and he was asking his dad if he'll still remember him. This is just me my friends beliefs about this movie. If anyone has any other theory's share them! ^^

It was supposed to be like that, the movie is aimed mostly at adults. Jonze didn't intend for the movie to be entirely based off the book, he just used the elements of the book as a way to tell his own story about adolescence and the loss of adolescence. That's why it's dark.

The actor kid who played Max has the same exact birthday as mine, only he's one year older than me. I'm 13. This was a pretty scary part of the movie, but I still love it.

This helped me just process some heavy news. I’ve always connected with this story when I was a kid and the first 30 seconds of this relayed deep with my situation currently. I’m the boy, my over confidence(my humerus) is Carol and Life is the Owl. Thank you for this clip.

This scene never terrified me, it made me feel sad that Carol lost control and yelled at Max "you were supposed to take care of us, you promised!"

I don't see it as Carol I see it as Max's feelings towards his father

I feared so much carol in this scene as a kid. His mood was so up and down, and agressive out of nothing.

Yeah, he just goes from aggressive to passive to aggressive again, kind of like he has something similar to bipolar.

@almessasorrow49503 ай бұрын
Carol represents how they feel. They decided to be the ruler, taking the role of the family which is distant. The bird represented the logic. Deep down they already knew, their mother(King) had no control. Their father who was supposed to keep them safe is gone. Their mother who was supposed to protect them was busy.They lashed out at the "king" but deep down they already knew there was nothing anyone could have done.
