I can't get enough of the "Mad World" sequence. Great song cover and a haunting way to start the end of the movie.

Grandma Death tells Donnie what his biggest fear is: to die alone. He has to overcome that fear: in the end he dies alone. He chooses this to save the ones he loves (and all mankind) and restore the normal timeline/universe. Yes, Donnie Darko really is a super hero!! Great movie - every rewatch reveils new details.

This movie is absolutely brilliant and I love the entire concept. How I perceive the movie theme is something of the greatest sacrifice not only for love as him dying saves Gretchen. Also him making the sacrifice inadvertently saves his sister and mother as well as Frank. Ultimately he perceives that his life is not worth the cost of all of the others and has the strength and will to go through with reversing the damage that has been done.

Killer soundtrack and atmosphere. Hard to express how profound it had been to see at the same age as the character, when I thought I was dying from a condition.

Donnie Darko is a very weird movie, with a lot of confusing rules that aren't explained unless you watch the director's cut. With the full rules, it is as follows: Every once in a while, the universe creates a tangent timeline, that is an unstable and unintended offshoot of the main timeline. When it does so, it centers this offshoot around a specific object that is not supposed to be there, and grants one person in the vicinity of that object the powers to fix the timeline by returning that object to where it came. In this case, the jet engine is the object, and Donnie is the "Living Reciever", I.E. the person who must return the jet engine. While in this tangent timeline, every single person, living and dead, will unknowingly attempt to aid Donnie in restoring the timeline. The Manipulated Living include people like the teacher, who tells him about the cellar door, Gretchen, who forms an emotional bond with him, the asshole teacher who has to sit in at the pedo's arraignment, and so on and so forth. The Manipulated Dead include Frank, who, after dying, gains the ability to essentially appear at any point in the tangent timeline and give Donnie advice. The entire function of the Manipulated Living and the Manipulated Dead is to drive Donnie to a point where he forms an emotional attachment with Gretchen, and ceases to fear for his own mortality. When he finally achieves this state, he uses his powers to sever the jet engine and fix the timeline, setting it back to where it was supposed to be. In doing so, he saves Gretchen, but knows he will likely be killed by the jet engine, which is how the movie ends. These rules are all explained in a series of, like, 5 title cards that appear for 10 seconds each scattered throughout the film, and so they're really not easy to understand unless you've seen the movie a ton, or done research on it.

Director's Cut is useful if you become a diehard Fan for a little bonus material, but absolutely ruins the tone of one's original viewing experience, and treats its audience like Children. Would recommend our Jimmy to not watch it for a few months to allow the original masterpiece set in nicely. 💖

@@steveswafen2528 The Warriors did a similar feeling thing by adding bland Comic Book style transitions between scenes, and absolutely ruined the tone of the atmosphere. It's such a gritty night adventure that needs no additional elements. The text inserts in DD make it feel like a cheap PowerPoint presentation. *shudders* Why do Director's do this?😅💖

Soundtrack is epic…I’m 50+ so it puts me in a time of infinite possibilities. Great movie and review Fuckass🤣 I think it’s an alternate path, not necessarily time travel. Take a left instead of a right, and the rest of your life is different. Not sure? Seen it 5-6 times, I’m not very smart.

As bad as the theatrical release was (editing) the director's cut was a masterpiece. Watching it a second time will blow your mind. The entire movie is about free will vs determinism but it is original because it allows for free will as long as the choices remain within "God's channel." Donny is a superhero. The "how do you know I'm not" line and the "why are you wearing that stupid human suit" lines reference that. There is also the "I have a power to build a time machine" and the several examples of his power like putting the axe in the statue. In the beginning of the movie he uses his power to prevent his own death. This choice violates God's channel. The discussion about how there are no planes missing an engine is referring to the ending. After he makes the choice it starts a cascade of events that leads to the collapse of the universe. Gretchen would have never met him and would have never been lying in the road. The motivational speaker would have never had his CP exposed and Donnie's mother would have never been on the flight. At the end of the movie he makes the choice to fly up and rip the engine off the plane and use it to travel back to the beginning to die when he was supposed to so he could prevent all the suffering his choice created. All time travel movies have some plot holes and this one has kind of a big one. If the engine that killed him came from a timeline that never happened how did it get to the main timeline? I can overlook this because the movie is so well done and doesn't hold your hand with the plot. It is possible that he was supposed to die of like a heart attack and used his power not to so a future version of himself hit him with a jet engine but that still would be a bootstrap paradox because the future version would never exist.
